Grey Poupon is a brand of Dijon mustard here in the States. In a long-running commercial for the brand two Rolls pull up together at a stop light and the fellow in the back of one leans out the window and asks the other "Do you have any Grey Poupon?" The fellow in the other Rolls says, "Of course," and passes him a jar.

This movie was filmed right before Freddie Mercury died. The production team sent him a copy of the Bohemian Rhapaody scene. Even though he couldn't talk anymore he was smiling the whole time

This movie is based on something that doesn't really exist anymore, back when cable television operations were starting in the US, part of the requirements was that they would provide a "public access" channel that was, like the name implies, open to the public. Anyone could create shows to be shown on the public access channel. There are some truly bizarre gems out there that were created during that period.

My best friend created a public access show in the 1980’s in Central Pennsylvania. He called himself “D.C. Washington.” I think it was an eclectic mix of political discourse and music. It mostly was audio. The video merely consisted of graphics as his audio played. He did the show from his house.

Wayne’s World was a Saturday Night Live skit that was very popular. The film studio also wanted a different song for the car scene. Mike Myers wanted Bohemian Rhapsody for that scene. It got to the point Mike said he would quit making the movie if Bohemian Rhapsody was not in the movie.

That one scene in this movie completely revitalized Queen's popularity in the United States. The 1992 re-release of the single as a result of Wayne's World charted even higher in America (#2) than it originally did in the '70s (#9)!

Back in the 80s, if you walked into a guitar store in Chicagoland, you were almost guaranteed to hear someone play Stairway within 15 min upon entering store. Also, if you were watching any type of band in a bar or at a fest or concert, you were guaranteed to hear someone yell Freebird as well.

Myers and Dana Carvey created his sidekick character Garth, and Carvey based his voice and mannerisms on his little brother. The Wsyne's World sketches were hugely popular on the show.

Hard to express how influential this SNL skit and movie were to kids my age. It popularized or invented the “not” jokes, the “we’re not worthy” thing, “as if”, and so many other mannerisms. Even brought bank “Bohemian Rhapsody” to a new audience. This is true Gen-X humor.

Ah yes, the movie that propelled the SNL skit into godlike fame. It's also the film that threw QUEEN into the limelight of the USA music charts. One might say that if not for Mike Myers' insistence on Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen might not be the immortal legend it is today. Also, fun fact, Brian May once said in a live in-person radio interview about Freddy Mercury before his passing, got an exclusive first screening of the Bohemian Rhapsody scene. And Brain May said, "He loved it."

To give some historical context here; when they were making the movie, the director Penelope Spheeris went to ask Queen their permission to use Bohemian Rhapsody for the film. She met with Brian May and Roger Taylor during a celebration to promote Queen’s Innuendo album. Freddie Mercury was not present for this; obviously due to his illness at the time. And when they were making the film and shooting the now-famous head banging scene, no one knew that Freddie was dying. After his death in November of 1991, the filmmakers put together the Wayne’s World version of the music video for Bohemian Rhapsody; using footage of the film mixed in with footage of the original music video along with footage of Queen in concert. The video was played quite a bit on MTV in early 1992. Combined with the announcement of the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for April of 1992, it propelled Queen back on the charts; with an estimated $130 million dollars in record sales; $30 million alone after Freddie’s death.

Mike Meyers grew up in Toronto, and there is a street named after him. His parents were from Liverpool, so Mike can do that accent too. Canada's Tim Horton's donut franchise was started by the Toronto hockey player of the same name. They named the one in the movie after Chicago Blackhawk star Stan Mikita, since the movie was supposed to take place in Illinois - so they got Mikita's permission to use his name and he appeared in the movie.

Can’t wait to watch your reaction to this, Dawn. Wayne’s World 2 is also good, though not quite as good. BUT, before you watch Wayne’s World 2, you should watch The Graduate. The reasons being, (1) it is generally considered one of the greatest films of all time, but also (2) Wayne’s World 2 HEAVILY spoofs The Graduate and you’ll miss a 3 minute extended joke if you haven’t already seen it. I'm not even sure I'd say 2 is above average. The first one is already a bit silly, but the second one turns into a live action cartoon. There may be a joke here and there that lands, but overall I think I'd just call it bad. Such a let down after the first one.

The scene near the beginning where Wayne and Garth pull up alongside the older guy in the car and he asks, "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?" is a take on a series of commercials that aired on American television for several years where the person pulls up alongside an older rich guy asks if they have a Grey Poupon. If you've ever seen the Church Lady character on SNL, that was Garth (Dana Carvey). You can find clips of Mike Myers as Wayne Campbell from 1986 (before the Bill and Ted movies) when he was a cast member of the Chicago branch of the Second City comedy troupe. He later developed it into Wayne's World when he was on SNL. The movie gave "Bohemian Rhapsody" a sudden boost in sales.

Oh the memories of this movie. It came out a couple years after I graduated high school and my friends and I were cracking up over some of the similarities. We were all metal heads, most of us either were currently in, or had been in, metal bands, and two of my friends (who were brothers) ran a local cable access television show focused on the Washington DC area music scene that we had all either worked on, had been on as guests, or both.

My stepdad and I saw this at the theater when I was 9 years old. Wayne's World was such a big influence on American pop culture - the soundtrack, the catch phrases and mannerisms. All of us in school and my friends in the neighborhood knew the movie. We'd play street hockey in the cul-de-sac where I lived, blasting Metallica 'n all that stuff on the boombox. Every time a vehicle came by one of us would say "CAR!!!", move the goal, then all of us with "GAME ON!!". Some of the very best times of my life. Grateful to have grown up in the 90s. \m/

During lockdown, Josh Gad did a series of cast reunion zoom calls…..all of which are excellent. But the Wayne’s World is one of the highlights, due to the fact that Brian May & Roger Taylor from Queen take part. May recalls how prior to Freddie Mercury’s death, he’d managed to get a tape of the film & took it to show Freddie; who at the time was in hospital. Mercury loved the film!!! Mike Myers was visibly moved upon hearing this tale, as he’d been totally unaware Freddie had seen the film. Fast forward several years & Mike Myers appeared in the Queen biopic. “This is sweet” Yessss, it is Sweet!! 😂

Its a great movie; basically everyone with a speaking roll in this film were real life friends with Mike Myers, (even the *Terminator 2* actor), and most came to work on _this_ movie as a favor to Mike after he left *Saturday Night Live,* they even would come back in the *Austin Powers* franchise with speaking roles. Dana Carvey _Garth_ is actually self taught drummer, he might've done the drum solo

I'm sure you've already gotten this, but Grey Poupon is a brand of Dijon mustard that's popular in North America. Now a days, you can get all kinds of stuff, but when I was a kid, in America, you basically just had regular yellow mustard, and Grey Poupon was the fancy mustard. They had an advertisement campaign that ran for many years, like back in the 80s. In the commercial, it would be set like out in the English country side, outside a large old aristocratic estate. Some rich aristocratic asshole being chauffeured in a fancy old Rolls Royce, would for some reason be in the back seat with like a whole dining set up, and making a sandwich, or something, when he realized something was missing. All of a sudden, on the narrow country lane they were on, another rich asshole in another Rolls Royce would cross paths with them, and the cars would stop side by side, and roll down their windows. One asshole would say to the other in a very posh accent, "Pardon me my good man, but would you happen to have any Grey Poupon?" And the other would reply, "But of course." And they'd pass the bottle of Grey Poupon through the window from one car to the other. The implication being, I guess, that every fancy rich dickhead has Grey Poupon on hand, and if you want to be cool like them, you'll buy Grey Poupon too. That was the joke. When they saw the stuffy old man in the Rolls, they pretended like they were in the commercial.

One of my favorite comedies - iconic! And the sequel was really good, too IMO. People sometimes overlook Rob Lowe in this movie, but he's really awesome. He once said that Wayne's World began a new mini-career for him as "good looking comic dick." lol... Underrated and versatile actor. He did a bunch of really well-received drama roles earlier in his career (Outsiders, St. Elmo's Fire, Bad Influence), then he did some comedies (Wayne's World, Austin Powers, Tommy Boy, etc.). He's also had some very high-profile TV roles like "The West Wing" and "Parks and Recreation" (one of my personal faves).

If I recall correctly, Dana Carvey who played Garth here is an excellent drummer. While he was still on SNL he sometimes played them there too. There is a sequel to this movie and I'd suggest giving it a peek. It is quite good too. This was truly a star studded movie back in the day...

Hi Dawn!🙂I don't know how much you know about Wayne's World. It started as a skit on SNL. Wayne & Garth would interview famous people in their basement. Usually it was the weekly host of SNL or the musical guest, but sometimes a surprise celebrity would show up. They were making fun of an American commercial for Grey Poupon mustard where someone would pull up to an expensive car and ask a rich guy if he had any Grey Poupon. If you liked this film Dawn, you will also really like "Tommy Boy" (1995). It is SNL inspired and Rob Lowe returns as a weenie in that film, too.
