I agree with the Advanced Warfare take so much. I remember loving the multiplayer gameplay of it when I was a kid and I was PISSED that it didn’t get recognized as much as it should. Story mode was really good too!

Agree with nick on the joy cons, yeah they’re not the most ergonomic but it’s a lot of fun laying on the sofa with freedom to move your arms around, perfect for games like switch sports aswell

There’s truly nothing like being able to spread your arms out like that. Being physically literally comfortable has a huge impact on how long I can play something. Being able to move around like that is spectacular.

i do think that its fine for Shadow of Erdtree to be nominated for GotY due to size and quality, but i feel like Nick's argument saying things like Spiderman 2 and Astrobot shouldn't be nominated based on the argument of them being continuations in the same world is a bit flawed. They are still fundamentally new games where you're starting over with a new character and everything. Erdtree is massive, but you are still playing as your existing character with all the same things unlocked and you're seamlessly moving between the DLC world and original world as you please. You can go fight things in the original map to improve your character to come back to the DLC. Spidey 2 is set in the same general map, but the things you did in Spidey 1 have no effect on Spidey 2. Playing 1 isn't required for 2, where you do have to do X tasks in Elden Ring to be able to even access Shadow.

In regards to DLC winning or nominated for GOTY, I’m with Conner and the person who submitted the hot take. But also I believe The Game Awards have a category called “Best Ongoing Game” Award. Cyberpunk 2077 won last year, and it’s not really an online game nor has Live Service aspects so I think it won for Phantom Liberty which is DLC.

I'm the one who sent that hot take and I completely agree with you! They need to categorize their awards better. The only ongoing thing cyberpunk had for them was the never ending development to fix the launch version (it's one of my favorite games now, but hell no lol)

Sorry Nick, but I'll stand on business with this one 😅 give me new rockstar, give me new fromsoft, give me a new resident evil or a different Capcom game. DLCs, remakes and remasters should be made out of passion. Erdtree definitely is, but it's taking spotlight from other games and manpower from fromsoft themselves from coming up with a new title. Love you guys ❤

I kind of agree with you but what constitutes "new"? Not trying to argue but like games like spider man 2 or ragnarok I wouldn't say they really did much "new" stuff in those games. It's not like they innovated much upon their gameplay save for some new move sets and stuff. I'd say the biggest thing they added was new plot. Is that enough? How much innovation needs to be done to be considered new?

​@@TheEpicWeezla sequel serves a purpose because the gamble is just as high as a new title. There are plenty of sequels that are 10X worse than the original game, but that doesn't happen with remakes and remasters (unless it gets outsourced and completely botched like the gta trilogy). Imagine a world where we get tlou 1 and 2 and a few other naughty dog titles instead of them rinsing and repeating the same crap for 10 years straight. I think decisions like that come from upper management and it ultimately hurts creative development in the studio. Many studios nowadays are one trick ponies because they kept that formula of reworking on old projects and they simply can't do anything else or come up with anything "new". God of war ended in a cliff hanger so it made sense that Ragnarok was lined up as a next title. And as for spiderman, I believe they'll make many games in that world because SM is one of their unofficial mascots, which will definitely hurt insomniac in the future when people are fed up with essentially the same game they got 5 other times

​@@TheEpicWeezlas someone who works in a creative industry, the whole remakes are new titles is so untrue... It may have a ton of new content and differences, but they're still capitalizing on nostalgia over quality. Not only people will buy it no matter what, but the sentiment is already there, so liking the game is 10x easier. When you deal with blueprints, scripts, direction, production, animation and everything in between from the ground up with no form of reference, you deserve all the flowers. But taking a masterpiece like a re4 and remaking the game for modern times should just be done for the fanbase and newcomers, not to steal an award from a studio that went above and beyond to create something new

I totally agree with you on the remasters and the remakes. As much as they upgrade it, it's still an experience the player has already had and shouldn't be included alongside brand new experiences. When it comes to DLC is where I'm getting a little iffy. Like maybe this is strictly an elden ring situation because shadow of the erdtree IS such a large and encompassing DLC. It's basically brought a whole new map, new weapons, new bosses, new plot. 40 hours of brand new content in any other franchise would warrant being called a sequel. I personally think it added more than the spiderman sequels maybe even the god of war sequel and I don't think anybody is saying those games shouldn't be nominated. Idk I do get the idea of a DLC being nominated for goty feels wrong. I guess to me erdtree feels more like a new game than a DLC.

Could not agree more with Connor on Remakes/Remasters/DLC's and game awards. A sequel is entirely different than these things. If you have to own a game to play its DLC, it's not a new game. It's wholly different than a sequel.

Fundamentally disagree with the dlc being recognized. The amount of things that are different between a sequel and it's original game, and a dlc and it's original game. Is quite significant. Like it was said, erdtree is using the same bone structure while spiderman 2 is using a similar but still different and new structure with different mechanics, like Venom powers, skill tree, swapping to Miles, new powers for miles. There is more new stuff despite being in the same world and same characters, and spiderman is one of the weakest sequels to use for being different

Hmm I'm actually kinda torn on the dlc award thing now. I DO think that elden ring shouldn't be nominated and definitely shouldn't win this year, but I do see where nick is coming from. There are plenty of "sequels" that are just glorified DLC's. Not that they are bad games by any means but you can't say they really pioneered any new tech or gameplay. Should games be nominated based on innovation or just pure enjoyment? Idk this is a pretty confusing topic.

32:10 I could see why 70% of ppl would choose graphics over frame rate because I think most casual gamers mindsets would be to play and or see the game as it was meant to be seen with the newest looking graphics and the visuals/art how it was meant to be seen. Not saying either mindset is right or wrong just saying most casual gamers prob don’t care about frame rate and I’d say there’s more casual gamers in general

I disagree with Nicks take in every way. The joy cons suck separate, they suck on that controller thing you get, and I was fine with them on my original switch but on the OLED there to lose in handheld mode. Tbh what I want Nintendo to do is give us a switch two like the stem deck where controllers are attached 100% of the time with no way to remove them and give us a pro controller in the box so we still get the handheld play and still get the tv play
