But that’s really wrong to use your power to to do such horrible things here’s a short list of how he treated his wife’s Cathrine of Aragon Only married her because he wanted an heir to the throne and when after 24years. Had passed he divorced her Out of anger that she didn’t have a boy just proving that he never really loved her Anne Boleyn Now before I say this do want to say King Henry was cheating on constantly so she decided she would too but Henry finds out and essentially he goes mental so like I said after Henry has been cheating he decided to murder her Jane Seymour Didn’t really do anything wrong to her but rumor has it that he never loved her he only wanted a child and she died in child birth Anne of cleves Here’s the funny thing about Anne of Cleves Henry saw her portrait and wanted her to marry him so she came to London and they got married after they were married she refused to sleep with him because she wanted to make Shure if she had a child they would be part of royalty so he became impatient and divorced her and need a reason so he said she didn’t look like her Portrait and if that were true he wouldn’t have married her from the beginning. Cathryn Howard Was also beheaded for cheating while Henry cheated on all of his wives constantly Cathrine parr Once again he didn’t Really do anything wrong to Catherine of course he cheated on her like he did his other wives, but no biggie... he died and cathrine became queen Sooo.... king Henry was essentially a pretty bad guy...

As someone who has lived through domestic violence and abusive relationships, I think that Waitress does address the issue. It's told from Jenna's perspective and you get so many glimpses of her realizing her situation and getting out of it. I relate so much to Jenna and seeing her happy and healthy after what she's gone through feels right. Although I do not condone the cheating subplot it was necessary for her to take control over her situation. And again from my experiences I think the musical handles it very well. - Evelyn.
@TheSongwritingCat5 жыл бұрын
I can see where the argument is coming from but I think if you take into account the fact that it's supposed to be a generally uplifting musical, it does do a good job addressing the issue. Things do get resolved a little neatly but the show isn't about everyone's experience with domestic violence, it's about Jenna's experience. And for her, she needed to start caring about herself again and to find the strength to stand up for herself. I don't think it's saying that everyone will be able to get out of an abusive relationship that easily. Also, there are so many small moments in the show (I've seen direction where Earl carries Jenna into the bedroom after a scene that strongly implies spousal rape) that I think are more meaningful than the possibly exploitative choice of showing physical violence or showing Jenna looking bruised and battered. There's enough violence against women depicted in the media. I don't think it was necessary to get the point across in Waitress.

Dr Pomatter thought Jenna what it felt to be loved and cherished and cared for. It was a relationship she needed to realize that she could have that. Most people stay in abusive relationships because the emotional abuse tells them this is the olny thing you can have. Once Jenna realizes that she’s worth way more than the way her husband treats her and that she can have more and she can give more, then she becomes unstoppable and most importantly she embraces happiness and fights for her own and her child’s happiness!!!

For a point of reference, the entire population of London when he came into power was c.60,000. I think the belief that people shouldn't be playing roles of other genders is just kinda... Regressive. I agree with @Anna S that it sounds almost TERFy
@Phelie3155 жыл бұрын
I think a probem is that there are so few roles for women anyway, especially for older women. There are more female roles in modern musicals (like Legally Blonde or Mean Girls) but it's a problem still. I do perform in a college musical group and, like most groups, we have a lot more women who want to be in it than men, but finding musicals that have more female roles than male ones is really, really hard. Most of the times it's like 6 men and 1 or 2 women. And so seeing these roles that could be played by women but aren't is annoying. And it's also no accident that it's always the same trope of "this is an older women that doesn't act in a feminine way and it's funny because it's actually a man, get it?" that's getting super old. I wouldn't want to change the roles we already know, liike Hairspray or Matilda, because that's what they are known for now, but I do hope we won't get more of this in the future. Write roles that are specifically written as drag queens (like la cage aux folles for example) or as trans characters, that's cool. But I wish they wouldn't just use the gender swapping for comedic effect.
@jamiehood8505 жыл бұрын
@@TheSongwritingCat I can understand that. I honestly think the way Trunch is played has effects on this. I've seen productions of Matilda where Trunch is just portrayed as this scary, tall, deep voiced woman, which definitely ties in with what you're talking about, but I've also seen productions where she's super sassy, with a shrill voice, really more than just the stereotype of a manly woman, which to me, turns her into a super fun role. I can understand how in certain cases, it would be offensive, but I've seen a few productions where it's just fun, and no one's focusing on the fact that it's a guy playing her, just how funny she is as a character. If you lean in super hard into making her this scary, manly character, then I think it's a stereotype, but if you just make her a super fun drag role, then I don't think it's a problem. Some of her songs, like "The Hammer," can be super fun if you play her this way!

It could have been done differently. The actors were great but I did not like the story. 2. Rolf and Christine belong together. Phantom was a psycho. He killed people and stalked, kidnapped, and manipulated Christine. I honestly do not get how people feel bad for him. 3. SHARPAY AND RYAN TOTALLY DESERVED THE ROLES OVER TROY AND GABRIELLA! They didnt even say they were going to "audition" until the time was up. They didnt audition in the first place and Ms. Darbus gave them callbacks. They also didnt even make it to that either. People need to stop hating on The Music Man, it’s not the musical’s fault that Broadway managers didn’t bother finding a new theatre for poor old Beetlejuice 3. They need to come up with new ideas for musicals, I can’t stand movies being turn into musicals (besides Heathers + Mean Girls) I want some original musicals! 4. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is brilliant and underrated, but Jamie became a dick to his mum and his friends in act 2 5. I didn’t love Waitress the musical...sorry Also you should start an Instagram account for The Squip Squad!!

"They shouldn't make movies into musicals besides these 2 I liked." Basically what you're saying. Guess what? Other people have movie to stage adaptations they like. You can't just say the 2 you like are the exceptions when there isn't anything that make them any different from other adaptations besides that you think they are better. Either be against unoriginal plots, or accept that adaptations like this makes a lot of great shows as well as some not as good ones just like original shows do.

Super unpopular, but I agree with the girl that said that Hamilton is overrated. It's very good, but there are so many people that say it's the best show ever, and I just don't agree. The real issue I have, though, is that sooooo many shows were overshadowed because of it, and never got any love. It's just sad. And when I tell people I'm into theater, and they tell me "Oh, I know Hamilton!" it just bothers me.

Here are my unpopular opinions 1. I don’t like Dear Evan Hansen, the music is ok at best, the story is generic, and I hate the fact that Evan gets off scot free just because “he has social anxiety and he’s a soft boi uwu” it makes the whole story seem toxic. He lied to so many people and there’s no consequences for that? 2. I didn’t mind Love Never Dies, the story was really fanfiction like but it has great music. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine. 3. German musicals are so much better than a lot of what’s on Broadway right now, not saying Broadway sucks because I love a lot of Broadway shows but the German musicals have a lot of substance in their stories and music. 4. Great 👏 Comet 👏 deserved 👏 better

To be fair, everyone in DEH sucks. The Murphys because they pushed Evan to lie (they were the ones insisting that the letter was Connor's despite Evan denying it MULTIPLE TIMES. They're the ones (forcefully) invinting him over and putting him in a very uncomfortable position with their fighting over their DEAD son essentially trashing him in front of someone they thought was his best and only friend. They didn't respect Evan's boundaries and wishes) and because they did "replace" Connor with him and because they didn't treat/parent Connor well (it's implied and said they did their best despite not knowing what to do but they ended up creating a very bad environment for noth of their children), Connor because of how he traumatized Zoé and because he refused his parents' help (implied that he did feel bad about both and didn't WANT to and that he had a bad combo of mental illnesses or something), Jared because he encouraged Evan to get along with everything then helped him before trying to cash in the movement it created and for being terrible towards him for all of their lives, Alana for posting the letter without Evan's consent and knowing it was personal and then ACCUSING the Murphys of being terrible people despite not knowing anything about the situation which started their doxxing, Evan for keeping up with the lie for so long (he was a victim of the circumstances and there was no good option but he allowed it to go farther than it should have and he let himself projecting onto it and Connor, a very REAL person who just DIED then he tried to use it selfishly and push his close ones away/is an asshole towards them [the show does punish him right after it and acknowledges that this was not okay and he went too far]), Heidi for not being capable of noticing her son's mental issues and lies (she acknowledged it and felt terrible but she couldn't do more, her situation was doomed). Zoe is the most blameless because she doesn't do much and is affected by every issues the othercharacters have. DEH is a show where you watch the characters make bad decisions in situations where there is no other option. But it also forgets/doesn't have time to acknowledge everyone's fuck ups which is a shame. Instead you can only see the most obvious problems/bad decisions if you're not over analyzing the show. To me, it's its biggest flaw. Also Evan doesn't get scot free: he kinda loses everything he finally had (friends, gf, "new family", his (toxic) way to cope), he can't go away from what his lies created either. What did you want the Murphys to do? Get him also doxxed? If they revealed anything, the backlash Evan would get would be terrible and dangerous. Not to mention that it would not help their situation and maybe make it worse. They also grew to care about him so it would be even shittier. Not to mention it would also ruin Heidi's live and she didn't do anything wrong towards them. They did what any decent person would do. Honestly there was no other way the show could end. There are no "satisfying ending" because that's simply impossible and unrealistic. But yeah the fans do have a tendency to forget how complex the situation and the characters were and reduce it into what I call "tumblr stereotypes". They spread a lot of misconceptions which become the base of a lot of critics of the show. Not that you're not entitled to your own opinions or anything!

@@ondiiina i agree, DEH is my favorite show but i hate how everyond forgets and even how the show seems to dowmplay everything EVERYONE did, not just Evan (the Murphys were not grieving Connor in a healthy way and they unknowingly pressured Evan knto the lie in the first place, Jared pretty much told Evan to lie and got mad at him after he only started talking to him for the emails despite him being an awful friend who never made Evan feel like they were even friends in the first place, made harsher in the novel cause it's mentioned they were actually kind of close once, Alana posted what she was made to belive was a suicide note, no need to say anythimg there ..... Zoe is the only character who seems to not have done something really messed up if you ignore how rude she is at first but that is because she was abused by Connor and she does not know what to feel after he kills himsel).

I think I prefer Glinda to Elphaba for the same reason I prefer Aaron Burr to Alexander Hamilton. It’s like how people say it’s more moving to watch an actor fight back tears than it is to watch them cry. It’s cathartic to watch someone stand up boldly for something they believe in but it’s relatable and often gut-wrenching to watch someone constantly hold back, doubt their own ability/talent, battle with their own mind, and regret things they’ve done in the past.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents when it comes to the question about The Trunch and Edna Turnblad. I feel like in musicals, women are given amazing roles and especially in new musicals. I feel like "yes, there can always be more female representation, but I don't think that that is a major problem." There are many men who like to dress up as women or play with gender. These men usually become Drag Queens, but they can't really do musical theater that much because there are just not enough roles that they can fill. They are not cast in roles which were written for females because the directors just don't think they look good enough or, because they are men, they cannot sing in the necessary range for these roles. Roles which are written for men but are conveying a traditional female character are needed. I feel like having some of these roles is something which is needed and should not be stopped. When it comes to the problem of men portraying women to make them seem ugly/undesirable I 100% agree, but I feel like that is a different conversation.

Sharpay and Ryan were *ROBBED* they clearly had the best audition, they ACTUALLY SHOWED UP ON TIME, they had both been in shows before and the director knew all about them, like yeah Gabriella and Troy sound kinda good I guess but they didn't even show up to the damn audition and they still managed to get a callback and the leads

I do think that Galinda >>>> Elphaba simply for the reason that, yes elphaba has had it harder growing up, but if you think about galinda’s life, in its own way was hard. She tried to be Elphaba’s friend and then had to pretend to the whole kingdom that she hated her. She also had to come to the realization that fiero didn’t love her. Also, in regards to waitress not winning the tony. I think that waitress and the other shows running that year should have won something but I also think that Hamilton was pretty stunning. I still prefer waitress as a show partially because it was kind of the underdog that year. Finally, in regards to “modern musicals aren’t musicals” I think that’s actually kind of rude because many people work on a show and even if it’s a flop or if someone doesn’t like it, I think if you put yourself in their shoes and how it would feel to be hated on for something you worked hard on.

TOTALLY agree with everyone who mentioned how elitist/privileged/gatekeeper fans can get. at the end of the day it's about enjoying yourself and sharing it with like minded people. the stage door stuff has gotten ridiculous. was I bummed when certain actors didn't come to the door? yeah, but it's not something they are required to do. I feel like social media has escalated the problem. people feel like they *know* an actor when they really don't. NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING. my possible "unpopular" opinions are Dear Evan Hansen is slightly overrated; though that just might be me feeling uncomfortable with the plot. I've dealt with social anxiety all my life so I can't really feel sympathy for someone that lied about being a suicidal person's friend to feel special, people are too harsh on musicals based on previous ips; especially those aimed at kids/teens, and that overzealous fans can ruin a musical for me.

I totally agree that Edna Turnblad should not be played by a man. Edna being played by a man deprives her of her femininity and her respect. I understand that the role was originated by Divine but it would be neglectful to ignore the fact that drag, as much as it is an amazing art form, has been used to dehumanize women, especially this character. Edna is such a complex and enduring character that so many could relate to if she was just played for laughs. Instead of helping the audience to understand the toll society has taken on this woman, this direction encourages them to laugh at her, "haha that sad fat woman looks like a man." Edna's story addresses issues of body image far more often and far more poignantly than Tracy's. Tracy has very little to no self esteem issues. She is confident so far enough to be considered possibly oblivious. While this is admirable, it's fairly unrealistic.Edna is a real person with so many valuable things about her and unfortunately making her a drag character most often results in her dehumanization and being forced into comedic objectivity.

I super agree with Amy about modern musicals being legitimate musicals. To otherwise argue that someone has to like old musicals in order to be considered a true musical fan sounds like a form of gatekeeping the community. What's the point of excluding people who also appreciate musical theatre? Even if they have different tastes, every musical fan appreciates the magic of musicals that occurs when so many expressions of creativity come together. There is so much more to geek out about beyond the score. Also, the insinuation that pop music is an inherently bad genre sounds like a second form of gatekeeping. Besides, pop music is a much broader genre than it used to be. Maybe that particular person is thinking of contemporary pop?Which, sure, can be very different from "old musicals" (also a very broad category). I'm late to the party, but I'm loving this channel!

I definitely prefer modern musicals to classical ones, they just resonate a lot more for me and I find they're a lot easier to get into. I agree that it's an interesting point to say that they shouldn't be played by men. I guess it depends on what the individual productions are going for, it'd be interesting to look into why those casting/directing choices were made originally. Sort of want to agree with the theatre etiquette one? Y'all need to keep Heather McNamara out of it! That being said, I think I just think her actresses are adorable. I'm curious how I'll feel about the Company revival on Broadway. Same director, different cast.

I've seen both Trunchbull and Edna played by women and they were both fantastic! If a woman can do it better then the men available, cast her!

This ain't an unpopular opinion, it's just a rant. I absolutely hated when some people got angry when The Guy Who Didn't Like Musical's came out and a whole horde of people came in because they liked TGWDLM and hadn't heard of Starkid before that show. A lot of older fans were welcoming and loved that Starkid was getting more popular, but there was that little group that didn't like the new people because they hadn't been there since the beginning or they never heard of Starkid until that show. They were just kind of rude, like sorry we never heard of this theatre company before please don't come at us for that. Sorry, I just really hate when new fans of shows or companies aren't appreciated/accepted because they weren't an OG stan or they just got there.

Unpopular opinion: Heather M. was forced into being rude by the other two Heathers. Like,I saw a production of it,and almost everything was mainly done by Heather D. and C. while she sometimes would try to stop them,but the other two would tell her to shut up or completely ignore her. Like,she isn’t the sweetest person ever,but she is sweeter than the other two Heathers. It just kinda seemed she didn’t wanna do some of it.

OK my opinion that of course if you do theatre you're a theatre kid, but... if you like have no interest in theatre and maybe listen to Hamilton or a musical theatre song u found on tiktok no ur not a theater kid. My opinion on people who only listen to mainstream musicals and don't theatre varies. If you do theatre and only listen mainstream musicals yes ur a theatre kid
