The original Lucozade came in a glass bottle with an amber cellothane wrapper. Your mum would give it to you when you were ill. It was like drinking syrup it was so full of sugar. After two glasses you would be bouncing off the ceiling!

Vimto has a few other flavours but they're mostly known for the original one. I would mostly buy it as a concentrate and add water as it's both cheaper and allows me to pick my own strength. Ribena have tried a few other flavours but mostly blackcurrant, it goes back to the war when it was popularised as a source of vitamin C. Again, I tend to buy the concentrate. Edit: Nope, none of those are caffeinated. Only colas and energy drinks tend to be caffeinated over here.

Dandelion and burdock is a traditional "root beer", made for hundreds of years. Used to be popular in anti-alcohol "Tea Total" bars. Vimto and Ribena only used to be concentrated cordial health drinks. Lucozade used to only be a sweet glucose energy drink for invalids. You would take a bottle of Lucozade with you when visiting people in hospital. Today they use the names as brand names to sell all sorts of sodas.

Welcome to blackcurrant! That’s the interesting flavour you can taste in vimto and ribena. You’ll quite often find a north/south divide, southerners tend to prefer ribena, northerners love vimto! Lucozade was something people brought with them to people in hospital 😊 Fun fact - my maternal greatgrandfather and his brother started a soft drinks company based out of Kettering in the Midlands called "Cooke's Pop" It went bust in the 1970's unfortunately due to bad management and my mum never forgave them. She used to ride on the horse-drawn cart when she was a child (she was born in 1910) when her father or someone delivered the crates to the local pubs. She also said she used to help stick the labels on the bottles 😊. Hugs from Sally in Sweden xx

Not so much 'invasive' (like knotweed) but because blackcurrants were a host to white pine blister rust fungus so they were banned til 1966 to protect the lumber industry. The ban was lifted due to development of resistant species, fungicides and distancing between white pines and blackcurrants prevented the spread of the fungus. Some states still have their own ban though.

Dandelion and Burdock is made from the plants, it says on the can its made from botanicals. We have laws that state you cannot state falsehoods on foodstuffs. So they are using the same plants now as they used in the middle ages and possibly before that. I believe it was the inspiration for American Root beer. We have Ribena squash which is a cordial to which you add water, in the winter we often make it with hot water, its so warming on a chilly winters day. Sadly you were sent cheap cans of Barrs pop, we buy Fentimans bottles of Curiosity Cola, cream soda, ginger beer, etc etc. More expensive but well worth the extra ❤

In the UK as children we used to love Cream Soda with a great lump of ice cream in it. Tizer comes from appetizer, obviously. The recent sugar tax rules have a bit spoiled the taste of many drinks, as you say leaving an unpleasant aftertaste. We call all such drinks 'POP', cola or coke we specify it as cola, we are specific. We cannot call every carbonated drink 'cola' when it is not. Dandilion & Burdock really is flavoured with these plants, otherwise it would be something else. Ribenna is mostly given to infants, like many juices is is usually concentrated & needs to be dilute with water to taste. It is made from Blackcurrants, which is one of the favourite flavours in the UK, not available in the US. Lucozade has always been a energy drink given to people in hospital or when they are ill. It is not taken as a regular pop drink. It tends to be very sweet. The regular flavour is orange. Regular 'pop' is Lemonade, which you would call sprite, because it is not like American lemonade. To find American style lemonade in the UK you would look for 'cloudy' lemonade. Beside these processed pops, the UK has many types of 'juices', cordial fruit drinks which are concentrated & need to be diluted with water to the strength preferred by each person. Robinson's Lemon fruit cordial has been a regular favourite at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships for years. You pore an inch or so into a glass & top up with water to the strength you like. It can also be made in jugs (pitchers) for several people to share. This means a litre bottle can make many drinks, or can be kept in the fridge for a long time. You clearly haven't yet got the British habit of once opened a packet of biscuits are pretty much consumed at one go. We find it hard to put the packet down once opened until all the biscuits are gone. Hardly anyone would put aside any chocolate bar after starting it, but usually eat it all at one go, however big. When enjoying our favourite goodies we never worry about calories or sugar content etc we just enjoy. Most of the drinks you tried here are not the regular flavours but the newer experimental versions, which are rarely as good as the original. Sugar rush? what on earth are you talking about, I've never known any such thing in my life, & I love my sweet treats, & have lived a very long time. I think you've been taken in by a load of stupid propaganda, which is weird in a nation that permits so much crap in it's food.

Lovely to see you both having so much fun today! Dandelion and Burdock drinks ARE made with dandelion and burdock plants. That's what the flavour is.... Ribena does come in a few flavours, but the OG Blackcurrant is by far the most common, and if someone offered you a Ribena you'd assume they meant Blackcurrant. It used to be very popular as a good source of vitamin C for kids, before fresh fruit juices were as readily available as they are now. When we were ill as kids Mum would give us a ribena made with hot water for comfort and to aid recovery. (The bottles we had were what we call 'squash' which is a syrupy cordial you have to dilute to drink- not the premixed version you have there)

Hello bpth. I am not a tea or coffee drinker. So, I drink loads of soda’s and because of my health mostly the zero calorie, zero sugar varieties. I am getting old! When I was a kid, in the 50’s & 60’s our biggest soda seller was Corona. To get Pop, as we called it, we had to wait for the weekly “pop man” to call, deliver the pop and take away the refundable empties. For us the favourite flavours were American Cream Soda, Dandelion & Burdock, Orangeade, Lemonade. Coke was not around my area then. In Cardiff there was a shop that made their own Sarsaparilla and lemonade, and they were great. Sarsaparilla was a drink often sold as a beer substitute in the tee-total bars when religions decided to ban “the evil alcohol”. For a hot drink my mum used to use boiling water to dilute Ribena, often in a Thermos flask to take to school in the winter. I imagine Ribena is a new taste for you and all fellow Americans. Blackcurrants had been banned for years in the US. We get blackcurrant sweets/candy, blackcurrant pies, pies and crumbles, you don't know what you are missing!

Ribena comes in other flavours (strawberry at least) but blackcurrant is the original and the best. If someone says Ribena they probably mean the blackcurrant version. Blackcurrant is such a normal flavour here and unheard of there. Irn-Bru, Tizer & Vimto are like an unholy trinity of awesome weird British soft drinks. My recommendations for Lucozade: Drink original when you're ill. Drink sport orange, fizzy or still when you're not ill.

One thing I’d like to add. Since the sugar tax the pops aren’t the same. They too me toast really wassy. They don’t have the same taste. If you get the bottles, that you dilute yourself are far better. You can add as much or little to dilute as you like. PS Lindsay I love Dandelion and Burdock. But again it’s not the same as it used to be. It comes from a burdock root.

Ribena was originally a concentrated cordial that you add water to, it is also often drunk as a hot drink. Lucozade was originally marketed as a drink to help recuperating people who have been ill. I find it interesting that some people over your side of the pond find they prefer full sugar drinks to diet or zero versions. I personally prefer the diet or zero versions as I find the full sugar too "syrupy" and "heavy". I've also never experienced the aftertaste that people like yourselves talk about with non-sugar soft drinks. Your reaction, however, to Vimto Zero suggests that how we prepare Zero drinks over here in the UK is different to the US. Perhaps we do them using better quality sweeteners with less of an aftertaste than in the US?
