Reacting To My Roots

In this video I react to UK vs US Kit Kat. The Kit Kat bar is definitely one of my favorite chocolate bars, but I had no idea they were originally made in the UK. I'm excited to try some of the UK Kit Kat varieties as I know Brits definitely make good chocolate.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

Many years ago I worked for Chrysler in London. My American boss had 2 children that had been born in the uk. He was going back to the USA for a holiday and was looking forward to giving them their first Hershey chocolates. When he came back I asked if they’d all enjoyed it. His reply, “why did I ever like this crap? It’s actually revolting and the kids thought so too”!!

Apparently the 'vomit' taste is a result of burning the milk during the heating process, and somehow it stuck as the 'American' way to make chocolate. You can experience something similar by trying to toast Parmesan cheese in the oven. Just put some on top of bread or something, and bung it in the oven. Mm. Enjoy the smell and try not to throw up.

The Chocolate Orange, you said your wife enjoys, is British. It was first made by the chocolate company Terry's in the early 1930s. When I was young, they were a staple at Christmas time - don't think I ever had one at any other time of the year! Unfortunately, Terry's was sold to Kraft in 2005 and the Terry's factory in York was shut down. Our beloved Chocolate Oranges are now produced in France :(

KitKats in the US are made under licence by Hershey and have a distinctly different taste than KitKats made by Nestle. Hershey was forced to reformulate their recipe for the basic Hershey bar for sale in Canada because the US version couldn't compete with Dairy Milk.

I'm pretty sure that when Nestle bought out Rowntree, the originator of Kit-Kat and many other brands, they "improved" the recipe to European standards and ruined the bars. The famous Yorkie bars became unpalatable until a new generation unfamiliar with the original took over.

"Cow cow"??! I'm guessing that's what we would call Cacao (pronounced Ca-COW), which is basically cocoa but made with unroasted beans (as opposed to roasted) and fewer additives. We do have peanut butter here, but it's generally considered a savoury thing that you might spread on toast, rather than in combination with something sweet such as chocolate. At one place I worked we had a canteen that made fresh sandwiches, and I often used to ask for a peanut butter and (hot) sausage sandwich. It had a sort of pork saté flavour to it! 😄

It's always been a required ingredient. It used to be that you could tell the difference in taste, between the two-finger and four-finger, as they were made with different chocolates. The four-finger was made with 'export' chocolate, which was all cocoa butter (it's not legal to sell chocolate without all cocoa butter in some overseas markets). Thankfully, they upgraded to all the same chocolate in the late 90s, improving the old Rowntree chocolate altogether.

We have 2 kinds of chocolate powder in the UK that are used to make drinks - 100% Cocoa (pronounced like the "coco" part of coconut) and "drinking chocolate, which is a mix of cocoa and far too much sugar. It changed hands again 2016 when it was bought out by an investment company, becoming part of the Eurazeo group along with Carambar, a French company, All Terry's products are now made in the Carambar factory in Strasbourg, France. Hi Steve, I enjoy a Kit Kat but I'm a bit of a purest, only 2 or 4 finger origionals for me, non of the fancy flavours, I don't even eat the Chunky. I agree with most Brits that a Kit Kat is a biscuit snack to have preferably with a cup of Tea or Coffee and not a 'candy' (how was my American accent there?) Terry's of York (the same city as Rowntree who invented the Kit Kat), produce the Chocolate Orange and that is a firm favourite of mine, and for all those that whimsically say "it's mine, not Terry's" .... My first name is Terry, so they are all mine. 😛 A little known fact is that "The Big Three" in the confectionary world here in the UK (Cadburys, Rowntree and Fry's, plus Terry's were all started by the followers of the Quaker religion, along with many famous businesses, Clarks shoes, Barclays and Lloyds banks, Bryant & May matches and biscuit firms Huntley & Palmers and Carrs plus many more. You may wish to read this article news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8467833.stm it will talk about Fry's Chocolate Creme, the first every bar with a filling, and still sold today. It is a dark chocolate bar filled with a spearmint centre. Peanut butter is widely available in the UK, but as you suspected, it isn't as popular as in the USA.

The Chocolate Orange is 'Terry's Chocolate Orange' The flavoured 2 finger KitKats also come in 4 extra flavours not mentioned, 'Dark Mint', 'Milk & White' (like your Duo), 'Cookies & Cream' plus new this year we have 'Salted Caramel' Our Chunky's come in 2 extra flavours not mentioned, 'Hazelnut' & 'Salted Caramel' 'Biscoff' are small biscuits (Cookies) flavoured with Cinnamon, Butter & Caramel that you serve with coffee We also get the Tubs of KitKat Ice Cream As well as the 'KitKat Bunnies' & 'KitKat Santa's' we also have 'KitKat Reindeer'

KIT KAT is NOT candy. It's a BISCUIT !! Kit Kats are best straight out of the fridge with a nice hot cup of tea. TERRY'S CHOCOLATE ORANGE ! A big seller at Christmas in the UK. Dark chocolate is supposed to be far better for you health wise. The higher % of cocoa solids the better. Peanut butter is not as popular in the UK. I have a jar of crunchy in my cupboard but hardly ever use it. Lotus Biscoff is a brand of biscuit, usually served with coffee in cafes, that seems to be making it's way into a lot of products in the UK lately.

Kitkat wrappings have changed as they are now recyclable ♻️ at certain supermarkets. For example, I shop at an online supermarket called Ocado, and they buy back carrier bags. So I just add any food packaging that says it can be recyclable at stores to my bags and send them back. I do miss the foil though, used to make a great cat toy 😅

Terry's Chocolate Orange Was never a fan of orange chocolate myself, though I've had dark chocolate with orange and it's V good.. I think it was cheaper brands or something, maybe taste developing as I get older.. Still hate Jaffa cakes tho. These kinds of bars.. If I have time (and am alone) I tend to eat the chocolate off the outside first.. Only works when cold and it cracks off. Minty or nutty and dark chocolate with low sugar & palm fat etc (not usually cheaper brands unfortunately :( tho there are some great mid priced ones) tastes significantly better to me.. and isn't nearly as unhealthy. Peanut butter (and nut butters in general) is gaining popularity. But it's not close to the US, especially in your bars(Bars of chocolate as we would say).. Aldi & Lidl do a big (for us) tub of peanut butter thats just nuts.. nothing else added like most the jars have.. tis great and safe for dogs (dog safe peanut butter is 10x the price and is the same stuff, 100% nut) Saying the largest kitkat (or most calorific) is a single peanut butter chunky is just wrong.. He showed the double bar earlier too after showing only 3 size options for the UK, none of which were the chunky.. Think they are portraying the sizes poorly, Also multi-pack snack sizes are far more popular here than single bars.. You get twice as much for the price Single bars that are generally near the checkout(till) here in Ireland have gotten silly expensive.. €1.20 for a bar of 35-40g, 7x25g multi-pack is €1.50.. Same for Crisps (chips) Cadbury chocolate isn't what it used to be.. Not made in the same place and most production isn't even in the UK.. It's still better than Nestle.. But it's just not quite as good as it used to be You should check out the history of Cabury and Bourneville.. They were V worker focused and morality driven..
