To be fair, AC was invented in 1902, these carriages were the height of luxury in 1920's, so I can see, it might have been appropriate. Some parts of the Royal train did have AC, according to National Rail Museum.

Don’t walk on train tracks, especially in the UK! In the US you might not see a train for quite some time and so walking on the tracks might seem safe. In the UK it is illegal to walk on train tracks (it counts as trespass) and also extremely dangerous, due to us having quite frequent train services on most lines. Many UK trains use an electric third rail instead of overhead power lines or diesel, meaning you could find yourself cooked by 750 volts even if no train comes along. There are legal places to cross tracks in the form of level crossings and footpath crossings, but it’s illegal to walk along them, and it is enforced.

With few exceptions the UK rail network is barriered and fenced as many tracks are electrified (mostly overhead). Its illegal to cross the tracks except at crossings there are very steep fines. I grew up in a big railway town and when I was young some kids had been killed playing or crossing the railway after getting through gaps in fences. There were also suicides on and off over the years from the railway bridges. There are also some Steam trains operating in the UK onn heritage lines

On the note of kids being killed on the rail tracks, it ties into the terrifying PSAs that were prevalent in the UK back in the 70s warning kids of the dangers.

A lot more affordable, you can take the Caledonian Sleeper from London to various cities in Scotland. You get a nice meal and a bed for the night and wake up to the beautiful Scottish countryside. And it's a LOT cheaper than that lol I did it a few years ago and it was about £200. You get a private room with a bathroom. And let me tell you, having a hot shower on a moving train is a very unique experience!

In the UK we have an extensive and busy train service and It's actually quite hard to get on to a rail track, to just walk along it. There are high walls, fences and embankments and CCTV everywhere. There are special crossing places for pedestrians, but even they are controversial, as many people have been seriously injured or killed on them! People are caught and fined every year, for doing it. PS. pea soup is lovely!

Train lines in the UK are very busy (and also have lots of curves meaning you cannot see a train coming until it is almost upon you)- so you absolutely DO NOT walk along the train tracks!!!!!! One of the safety lessons we are all taught at school, along with 'stranger danger' and how to cross the road safely is the danger of trespassing on the tracks.

I think the East Coast line, London to Edinburgh, is a much better way to travel than taking the plane - gone are the days when you could rock up 45 minutes before departure, so by the time you get out of central London, plus check-in & security, you could be over half way to Scotland on the train. The train takes you through some incredible scenery, interesting cities (York, Newcastle etc.) and runs alongside the sea from Berwick up into Edinburgh. I used to work above Victoria station and could see the Orient Express sitting in the station looking very fabulous.

I have been on this train many years back when it was run as the orient express, I had a trip to bath from london that we won in a school raffle from my daughters school. the food was excellent and the service was superb, when we had out trip it was pulled by a steam train (there is also a diesel loco at the rear to assist if necessary- all other trains have to give way to this train and you can get various trips to different places, originally we had won a day trip around kent, but it hadd to be cancelled due to one of the carriages being pulled for maintenance, so we had an upgrade to a longer trip, there was another to shoreham that included a flight on a 1930's passenger aircraft , but we chose the trip to Bath.

U.S., Amtrak, Originally, all toilets and sinks on passenger trains were direct-dump-onto-the-tracks. When you flushed a toilet. In the USA, staff were instructed to lock toilets when the train was stopped in a station and unlock them when the train was again underway. Mercifully, new trains no longer dump waste on the tracks. Instead, trains are fitted with chemical holding tanks. sounds like it was a common practice. here in uk it is being fazed out, but some carriages are quite old like on the uk fastest diesel HS 125, old carriages but updated for disability, or some the class 156/158, just upgrades over the years so some can be over 40 years old, just had upgrades over years. our modern trains come as set so tend to be all the same age, but loco pulled stock a different matter, same goes for some of the smaller city trains. id say its good for an experience going on uk trains but some the extra time you need and lot the time you miles from where you want to be, more cost/time. about an 8 hour train ride to north west wales could be done in 4 hours, maybe a tad more but still way faster and that not inc the over 1 hour bus ride to town i was staying in, and half an hour waiting for bus. as an experience jump on try a uk train, or try some heritage trains along your travels as we have heritage lines all over country, uk classic diesel locos, steam locos, i say you like that more than the modern trains, and heritage lines go through some the best countryside and small towns and villages.

i grew up in small town too, 3300 people. great growing up in a small town deep in the valley surrounded buy mountains. had river running through center of it, and a heritage railway, so crossing bride on way to school many times you see them firing up the steam loco, diesel loco. good fun growing up small town, more chilled. prob a reason i hate city's these days and avoid them. a very out doors activity place but cannot beat that when younger, and as older great place to rid of city stress and spend 3-5 weeks a way a year sometimes a few months away over the whole year. entering wales, my heart rate drops, feel less stressed back at home :)

I have always wanted to go on a special train, especially one with a steam train on the front. Around the uk are heritage railways which you can have the experience of riding behind a steam train, and one that I love to visit from time to time feels like you stepped back into war time. And they have an event where they have a war themed weekend, and people dress up in clothing of that era. There might be a video, I've never looked for on, but if there is one, it might be Great Central Railway war weekend. Or something.

As people have commented the orient express was the setting and title for an Agatha Christie novel but was a real train service that traveled from Paris to Istanbul in the early 20th Century. WW2 pretty much destroyed it as changes in regional stability meant sections of track were removed to isolate countries. To this day it is physically impossible to do the route though Micheal Portillo did the route as close to the original as possible a few years ago.

Steve - if you intend touring UK by train (great idea, by the way), I would recommend not paying for the first ticket you see, shop around for the cheapest deals in daily or weekly tickets. You could save yourself a good chunk of money. Although, to access the best of Britain's attractions, renting a car would be the best way to go...or do a mix of both. I hope you make it over here soon.
@stevekenilworth

But if you already renting a car, it be far cheaper to travel by car . a trip to my mums and back in wales, about £50-60 each way, well it was many years ago, same journey cost about £20-30 each way in car . but whats more important, time saved. the same journey a 7 hour trip on train but my car only 3 hours. my advice is if you want experience uk trains, drive to local area and maybe get train to another city for the day, or have a ride on some heritage lines along your travels as we have many classic diesel and steam locos in use. problem with trains is time they take and usually miles from where you need to be, some places impossible to use public transport to get too so require expensive taxi, and if you travelling to a popular attraction you really want to get there before the crowds and that cannot be done using public transport. so as an experience try a uk train but to save time and cash if all ready got car use car.

When I was younger in my business days, I'd sometimes catch a full English breakfast on the train complete with teapot and fancy crockery. My stop was often just a thirty minute ride, so I had to ask the waiters for priority serving (no extra charge). Now - well you know how things are in the 21st century - there's only one train in Britain which still serves breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening. But you CAN use your Britrail ticket on it (free of charge, which of-course you have to buy in the States before you come over). The 21st century is the era of Big Macs, powder fries, and plastic cheese (all of which I've experienced), so it pays to do a fair bit of homework beforehand, as I now always do. With regards to A.C. and toilet flushing, don't forget that we weren't around in the 1920s, neither even your parents.!!!! Finally, you can't walk on the tracks in Britain because the trains are too frequent and too fast. Furthermore, in the South, many tracks carry the electricity in the rails, not in overhead cables. And we're talking at least 600 volts.!!

I have never had the chance to travel in such luxurious trains, but I did have the luck as a child living in Kenya in 1957 to travel on a superb train from Nairobi to Mombasa (about 274 miles) for our summer holidays. The train was silver coloured and my parents had booked a double suite : 2 bedrooms, joined by a bathroom and a lounge. I was only 7 at the time and can't remember anything about the food, but what I do remember is a slow train crossing vast plains with wild animals everywhere. The train was so slow and the track was never straight, but curvy, that at times you could put your head out of a window and say hello to other carriages a little further up. It is a memory I treasure dearly !

You wish? These carriages ARE stunning but can you imagine if they were the replacement service for a morning rush hour service into London where most people would have to stand with bags and cases etc ? All that luxury suddenly becomes functionless mess and lack of space 😲

@@jackjames3190 A few years ago this train was run during the normal kent commuter train service as a promotional trip, the train made the normal station stops and waiting commuters were invited to travel free and served breakfast on their way to London. That would make a good start to the day.

Been on the Belmond British Pullman several times. It was a wonderful experience, and the best way to eat a meal without question. 😋 I would take exception to his comment that it's for the lucky few, as in fact, it's not that out of people's budget. I wouldn't say I was well off as I work as a gardener for the local council. But I do save for a while to do the trip. Just remember to dress a little formal.😃

If you just want to see countryside, you can book a train 13 weeks in advance and pay as little as £30 for a 400 mile round trip, with a pre booked seat. Admittedly you will be sat next to some one loudly chewing on a sweaty tuna sandwich, but you will see the same views. (Note if you pay on the day you will probably pay 5 times as much)

There's loads of good trains to take in the UK - the West Coast and East Coast Mainlines are good (though worth paying the extra for 1st class for both as they can be very busy). We have 2 sleeper trains - The Caledonian (London - Glasgow/Edinburgh/Scottish Highlands) and the Night Riviera (London - Cornwall). One of the most popular trains is the Jacobite (run by West Coast Railways) which goes from Fort William to Mallaig via the Glenfinnan Viaduct. There's plenty of good routes to do by ordinary train too. Good routes in Scotland are Glasgow - Oban/Fort William/Mallaig, Edinburgh - Inverness, and Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh. In England, the Northwest and Southeast are both nice to see by train, and I believe Cornwall is as well but I've not been there. But never, ever walk on the railway lines here - commuter trains are very regular and run only minutes apart, and freight trains are often unscheduled so you never know when they're coming. There are a few places you can cross the tracks but they're in rural places and even then there's signs telling you not to loiter, and to keep your ears open. In built up places the lines are often electrified as well, so if you don't get run over, you'll get electrocuted!

Loads of trains in Britain and Ireland to explore the countryside and visit the cities. Best way to get around for sure. You can buy a Brit Rail Pass to give discounted travel. Likewise passes for Ireland too. Most express trains have either a cafe car to buy food; and some have dining experiences, either in first class or sleeping car accommodation. Unlike America with long distance trains only being once a day, the frequency of trains in Britain and Ireland is much higher. In London, some routes have trains every few minutes. Rail guide books can point out the most scenic like Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, Glasgow to Malkaig, Dublin to Rosslare, Coleraine to Derry.

I love a ride on a proper steam train. They usually announce it on the local news site when there's one passing through. My nephew likes to go and see them. He's autistic so train's are his thing both old and modern. He can tell you what model a train is just by looking at it and everything there is to know. He likes to collect the number's of any train's he goes on.

From the age of 5 to 20 we lived right next to the railway line there was our house and the next 2 houses had been bombed then there was the railway lines we used to see the Pullman passing our house,we used to talk to engine drivers, when they used to stop opposite our house, they would ask us what we had done at school and one day we were chatting to them and I told them our mam had just had a baby boy last night, they told us to congratulate our mam,the next time we so them one climbed out of the cab and came to us with a box of chocolates for our mam, which was very nice of them,my little brother was mam's 5th child with another 3 to come later,2 girls, Carol and Jaquline and a boy George.

If you come to ireland ,you won't be able to explore ireland north or south by train, not that there isn't some good scenic train runs like the DART from Dublin to Greystones and Belfast to Derry but generally its all dublin the other cities are not linked by rail ,except cork limerick but thats not a direct link you have to change trains.Ireland used to have a more extensive network but most of the lines have been abandoned and some have been reinvented as Greenways for walking and cycling.

This train on this trip runs along the bottom of my garden. It is forbidden to walk up the train track where this train is running and pretty stupid too as our trains today have a live rail. Trains today do have tanks for the sewage. This train was running 100 years ago. The tracks did not run near houses.

Back in the 1990’s the U.S. had a luxury train called the American European Express. It operated out of NYC and Washington DC to Chicago. I was fortunate to take the Washington to Chicago overnight and it was incredible, The cars were designed in 40’s style with beautiful inlaid panelling everywhere, the dining car served meals that would be equivalent to a top big city restaurant. By far the best train journey I’ve ever experienced. Because Americans (with money) have an aversion to trains the company folded and the country is the poorer for its demise.
