Dave Allen was performing this style of comedy at a time when most British and Irish comedians were gag merchants, telling mother-in-law jokes and that sort of stuff. That may be why a lot of women from my experience found him hilarious. He was ahead of his time.

Dave Allen was a great comedian, we watched all his TV series on BBC. My parents saw him live at a London Night Club and he was hilarious, handling hecklers in a humourous way. He walked around the tables and helped himself to a drink of whisky off my parent's table and my mum bought him a drink. He stayed to talk to them later because of that. Dave Allen even on his TV shows had whisky and cigarettes at his side. His shows were on the BBC and if available are a wonderful watch. A mix of standup and sketches. As a southern Irish man, he was the first to mock the church and life. Heart warming to hear Linsay laughing so much. I think she definitely has a lot of British genes. ❤❤❤👵❤️🌹🌹🌹

Dace Allen is one of our comedic legends - no doubt about it - always adding a common sense element to things that are naturally ludicrous. His digs at religion - particularly those where he has a dig at the Irish Catholic Church. His religious rants he is particularly known for and was an atheist in life - also he lived not far from where we live in North Devon on the western edge of Exmoor.

I saw him live in the 90s. His TV shows were a must-watch. My dad loved him. His shows were controversial in his home country of Ireland and he wasn't particularly liked either in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland as he tended to upset everyone. He was popular in England/Great Britain and Australia. He was also one of Adam Sandler's first comic influences.

He was more or less banned in the republic of ireland RTE wouldn't show him and many people in the 70s and 80s only had RTE no british channels at all so they couldn't see him at all.I don't know what was like in the north but i imagine it was just catholics who took offence who were a minority then

I grew up with Dave Allen (he was on Australian TV every Friday night). He was immensely important to my upbringing - he was actually trained as a Catholic Priest but he withdrew before being ordained. This gives him remarkable ecclesiastical insight and makes his religious jokes basically the same as an “insider” would tell. He gave me my first image of “God” (he envisaged him as a great big fat jolly man who could laugh at everything including himself) - that always stuck with me. I grew up with one parent indifferent/agnostic and the other sternly atheist but I followed neither, I owe that to this man and am forever grateful.
