A good friend of mine used to run a small comedy club in central London. The acts were either "up and coming" comedians or established pros trying out new ideas. One evening Al Murray turned up and asked whether rather than use the stage, would it be okay to do his new act from behind the bar - and that I believe is where "The Pub Landlord" was first tried out on a live audience. (I'm sure many others will say the same in the comments - but, you have to do "Al Murray vs Americans" - it's hilarious!) Another great comedian from London, is Micky Flannagan, my favourite, is his act, "To catch a peeper" - but everything he does, you can't go wrong!

For context, Al Murray plays a pub landlord - traditionally these were men who ran a pub. They were typically strong characters who were very opinionated (in spite of not always being the brightest) on everything, had traditional views, and often very patriotic. Growing up with these characters, their world-view resonates with many people and provides the ideal vehicle through which he delivers the comedy. Seeing the world through the lens of this character helps deal with contentious issues, make fun of things, and challenge/sidestep political correctness.😅

The Pub Landlord edit Murray's principal character in performance is an English publican with conservative values and an animosity towards Germans and the French; he challenges audience members to name any country before producing some plausible instance of Britain bettering it. The character has a great love of the British 1970s rock band Queen, often getting musician(s) on his show to perform one of Queen's tunes in their own style. He has described his persona as a "know-all know-nothing blowhard who knows the answer to every question even though he hasn't been asked any of them".[17] The character first appeared in 1994 during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in the show "Pub Internationale", with Harry Hill[13] and Matthew Bradstock-Smith (who played "Little Alan" as well as the keyboards in Hill's Edinburgh, radio and TV shows). The show featured the "Pub Band", with Murray playing the drums and compering. After trying out a character deemed not to have worked, at the opening show Murray suggested saying that the compere had not made it to the show and that the barman in the venue, the Pleasance Cabaret Bar, had offered to fill in. At the Edinburgh Festival,[18] Murray came up with "The Pub Landlord".[

I know introverts feel different but I love comedians you can involve yourselves with. I am an Auatralian and there was this comic named Rodney Rude and he had the kind of show where the audience yelling out stuff were called hecklers, but they were also integral to the show and Rodney Rude wanted those 'hecklers' to yell out whilst drunk. Addressing the hecklers was at least 10% of his show. I had been to a show before but when I went to a 2nd show I was drunk and felt confident. So I started interrupting him and yelling out in the middle of his show. It was brilliant. He tore me apart. My looks, my clothes, the mystery of how I had a girl agree to attend the show with me, the way I speak, what my future would be. The dude took a solid 2 minutes of the show to level me like I was Baghdad. And then after the show Rodney Rude found me in the bar and bought my party a round of drinks and spent a solid half hour chatting and laughing with us and thanking me for the ammo.😂

In his tv series Time Gentlemen Please he played his character but with a bit more of a backstory such as his wife having left him for a French barman taking their son with her, which gives him an irrational hatred of all things French, only for the same French barman to arrive in his pub looking for the lady in question, because she has run off with another barman. There’s also an episode where he is having an extension built on to his pub and the builder finds archeological remains so he has to stop the building work to allow the local university archeology department to dig up the entire pub garden, but the students spend most of their time in the bar , blocking the regular customers from being served. His character is also always seen wearing a red jacket which is the insignia of a landlord’s association that he is supposed to be a member of, but he is accused of breaking some rules of the association and is nearly thrown out. It was shown late at night on the ITV channel so it wasn’t as popular as it deserved to be, you should be able to find some clips or even some episodes via the internet.

There is a comedian called Dara O'Brien and he goes along the front row talking to people. One show he got halfway along and the guy said he was a food technologist and a couple of questions later he said "I invented the Magnum ice cream". Dara then said "right the rest of you can go home".

They are random audience members. He is just very intelligent and remembers the names... He is a historian and specialises in military history.

Look up "Secretaries". That will show you how he starts his shows and how he learns their names and occupations and he then uses that as part of his show and keeps referring back to them. He is also a renowned historian, particularly about WW2 and has made his own documentaries and podcasts. He is currently making a WW2 podcast with historian James Holland called "Walking the Ground".

I have seen Al Murray a few times. He spends the 1st part of the show getting to know members of the audience and then refers to them for the rest of the show. He plays the part of a pub landlord. He is very knowledgeable and has a degree in history from Oxford University. Please watch Al Murray vs Americans.
