if i remember correctly, this doesn’t actually interpolate the original; in an interview, Ariana says that she wrote this almost as a sequel to the original, but the only thing she actually took from the original is the title. the sonic elements are unrelated to the original the boy is mine.

Yay! Thank you guys so much for reacting to the video that I requested! :) So the lore behind this song is that "The Boy Is Mine" is a spin off of "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica from the late 90's. The reporters that you saw at the beginning of the video actually is Brandy and Monica themselves! You guys also hit the nail on the head about how Penn Badgley is the stalker in You, and is being the one stalked in this video. Earlier this year, the media went crazy after her divorce with her ex-husband and how she is currently dating Ethan Slater (who recently had a baby and left his wife) and the media was blaming her for what happened, so she wrote this song about being the villian that people "think" she is.

regarding the lore, people were connecting it to her recent controversy where she was deemed a “homewrecker” (which isn’t even true) because it mirrors the lyrics of the song, in actuality, the reason she wrote this is because she has this unreleased song called “fantasize” that leaked last year in the height of the allegations which went super viral on tiktok and everywhere, it even charted on spotify. people loved it so much, they were begging her to officially release it which is an irony considering they were tearing her down and calling her such names while simultaneously illegally enjoying and wanting her to release a song about stealing somebody else’s man but that’s a story for another day, anyway, “fantasize” isn’t even supposed to be her’s, it’s for a tv show by Seth MacFarlane that got scrapped alongside other songs Ariana wrote for the soundtrack. so instead of officially releasing “fantasize” she made “the boy is mine” as her own version for her upcoming album that came out at the beginning of this year. i will say tho, the lyrics of the song doesn’t mean she’s confirming the allegations, the real meaning of the song works better in the context of the album because it is placed just after a song that basically means “if this is the version of me you made up in your head, then i will be that very exact person” which is called “true story.”
