Hey Gals, if you're curious to see how RTD has evolved as a writer over the last decade I can highly recommend It's a Sin. Arguably the best thing I saw last year, and only 5 hours long. 🙂

I've not rewatched this episode since it aired, but watching your reactions, I forgot how enjoyable of an episode this one was. It's not an all-time favourite or anything, but it's a fun globe-trotting romp with an important message and there's never been another episode quite like it.

I liked this one, super hard SF a la Clarke or Crichton. The Crichton it reminds me of is "The Andromeda Strain", also an excellent movie. The Doctor using the scientific method to solve a scientific problem, brilliant story, and Jodie hits every mark as usual.

A lot more running around in the dark for me added to the frantic music doesn't really help tell the story . The ideas behind it are good but as with so many of these episodes it all seems too rushed . Still , I'm glad you enjoyed it , for me it was just ok.

14:59 As I've said for other episodes, I don't think this one is bad, just that it has way more potential than it used. For Jodie specifically, I think this episode [specifically the scene at 11:07] highlights a problem with the writing, in that the Doctor is given literally no agency over the situation. Sure, she tries to talk to the villain, but the story would be exactly the same if she was there or not. In this scene (and quite a few others in this era) she's not given an opportunity by the writers to actually *do* anything as a character, only to try to do something and fail. Which I think is problematic with this flaw in the writing coinciding with the Doctor being a woman for the first time.

I had similar problems with their interactions with the Master in Spyfall, the fact she didn't even scold the Master for killing a bunch of people in front of her needlessly, let alone do anything to try something to stop him.

@@ghostsurfer23 As I said before: The problem with Chibnall's era is the writing. This becomes quite clear in the 3rd season he did and also in the last few episodes of season 2.

Poor Amaru dies...and nobody notices. ☹☹ While I think this episode has some good concepts, like many Chibnall-era stories, it feels a bit too over-stuffed for me. I really wish they would pare back all the extra characters more, so I could get more characterization of the companions (and the Doctor) instead, but oh well. 🤷‍♂

What load of...the ones who have enjoyed this poor 3 series are the minority. Fact is audience has fallen the appreciation has fallen and most casual viewers don't care about the show anymore compared to a decade a go. Look if you liked the last 3 series fine, but it's a shame they consider this soooo good when better was done, This and Orphan 55 out of all Jodie's episodes has both been the most lambasted, hated and micky taken out of then any episode, oh and maybe the embarrassing Arachnoids In The UK, another embarrassment and most fans who have seen more then just Nu Who know the environmental message has been do way better of showing environmental consequences watch 3rd Doctor episode The Green Death, Inferno and The Silurians

(That includes all of so called new Who and quite a few of the so called classics) Of course I like some more than others, but why should that matter, if they are good over all? And I'm also really excited for what comes next! Glad you two are enjoying the show as much as I do! Cheers! 😀

I think that series 12 is Jodie's best and I like her a lot! Lots of my friends aren't too keen on this era and just arent watching Dr Who anymore saying they don't like Chibnall's writing. Sadly the tv ratings for Dr Who have really fallen.Jodie got amost 11million viewers for her premier episode and her last episode got just over 3 million which kinda points to the fact that a lot of people havnt enjoyed the Chibnall season. Overall I don't think Chibnall's writing has always served Jodie as well as it could have which I feel is part of the reason for the ratings decline although I also think there are other factors at play here as well. On the postive side there are some really good Chibnall episodes. I loved the Villa Diadante one ! Revisiting this season with the GGs has certainly made me aprreciate Jodie's seasons so thanks ladies :)

Re: The Direction of the show I personally would like to see a lower budget Dr Who again. Due to Who's popularity over the decades, the show now sits on a really high pedestal of fandom. It takes a very large team of people along with a million dollar budget to produce each show. This produces a ton of pressure to "get it right" causing a lack of content for us to enjoy. I promise you I have a point here. What do you call a major video game today? There's a name for it but I forget. It's got the latest and greatest engine and graphics. Millions are pumped into its development and they'll blow millions on advertising it. Like No Man's Sky. Which originally flopped falling vastly short of expectations. Then comes along a game called Stardew Valley. A small indy game made by one guy. He understands what a gamer wants and enjoys. It proves that you can have and make great content without all the bells and whistles. And that's what I want for future Dr Who. I want a "Care Free" series where you can have a season of 30 episodes. Half the fun was having a low budget and having to be creative. Great Characters and actors can really carry a show far.

It's not just preachy, it's patronising. This show has some of the smartest people in the world from scientists to astronauts amongst it's fanbase and the writing under Chibnall is just one step short of turning to the camera and telling the audience off. For me it's one of the biggest reasons that so many people have turned off.

I really enjoyed Praxeus, and I don't get why so many people - and I don't just mean "haters" - are so lukewarm about this story. It's well written, well realised, and the Praxeus special effect is memorably gruesome. What's not to love?

I'm honestly at a loss for what to say about "Praxeus", because there's very little about it that feels very notable or distinctive. There's nothing really bad about this episode, but at the same time there's nothing particularly good about it either. This is probably the most average middle-of-the-road episode of the Jodie Whittaker era, definitely a decent and enjoyable episode but it's not the sort of episode that you're likely to remember in a week or so. Much like the first part of "Spyfall", I like how this episode has a story that has a massive global scope which gives this episode a very different feel compared to most other episodes. Also like that episode, the fact that the companions are split up for a large portion of the episode means that we're actually able to explore some interesting dynamics with these characters for once, especially with Yaz taking on a more independent explorer role a la Clara in series 8 and 9. The mystery is a really compelling one, and I like the way the information is slowly drip-fed to us over the course of the story, allowing us to slowly put the pieces together at around the same time as the characters. The virus itself is a pretty nifty concept (albeit one that struck startlingly close to home, considering that this episode was first broadcast in early February 2020), and the gruesome body horror it inflicts upon its victims is very well-realised. On top of that, I like how it actually allowed the episode to explore its environmental message in a very compelling fashion - it makes for a very clever twist, provides some good social commentary, and it actually teaches the audience something (I don't know about anyone else, but I'd never heard of microplastics until this episode came out). This is how you do a political message in an episode of Doctor Who - you make sure that the message fits with the story you're telling, as opposed to just bolting it onto the end of a completely unrelated episode. But while "Praxeus" does a lot of things right, it's kind of balanced out by some rather questionable creative choices, especially with regard to its characters. While the companions get some pretty decent stuff to work with for once, the Doctor is back to the rather 2-dimensional figure that she was last series, which is especially annoying after the last episode gave her some good material to work with. I do quite like Adam and Jake, the latter's more direct attitude and hidden insecurities made him a rather fun character (and it's nice that for once in this era we have an episode that doesn't kill off one of its gay characters). But the rest of the supporting characters are a really bland bunch, Suki's an underwhelming twist villain in the same vein as Charlie from Pete McTighe's previous episode "Kerblam!", Gabriella completely forgets about the fact that she saw her best friend of (presumably) many years just explode in front of her eyes, and the ensemble is generally so overstuffed that none of the characters feels like they've been fully developed. There's some other things that kind of bug me, the general lack of acknowledgement of the events of the last episode feels weird in the same way as a lot of series 6's standalone episodes did, the dialogue is once again very clunky and full of unnecessary exposition, and I actually wasn't a big fan of Segun Akinola's score for this episode. I don't really have much else to really say about "Praxeus". I reckon a lot of the backlash towards it was driven by it being a standalone episode following the game-changer that was "Fugitive of the Judoon", but there's not a lot else in here to really make it that noteworthy. It's a fine functional episode of Doctor Who, which already puts it way ahead of an alarming number of episodes from this era

See, this did the environmental message so much better than Orphan 55 for me! There aren't too many side characters, they're all fairly interesting and relatable, the message is subtle but not hammered in, and also timely (because micro plastics are disturbing as all get out), there are some nice twists, and some nice romance! There are a couple of plotholes still (that one character kind of disappeared mid-way through, and Jamela's death wasn't fully dealt with), but not bad. This one just resonated more for me.

The first time I watched this episode I was all "Wait! What?!" There was just so much happening that I wasn't following how all the different bits were connected. I do like this episode and i like the messaging about polution and plastic. My only main critism of this episode is the part where The Doctor rescues Jake with having the TARDIS materialising around him i felt that was somewhat cheated and too much of a get out of jail free card because if the 13th Doctor could do that why didn't the 5th Doctor do the same for Adric. I did feel that was too easy but the exploding alien posessed bit for a grown man like me really scared the heck out of me and i hadn't been this scared of Doctor Who since the classic days and it did lack the scariness since the show came back in 2005 apart from the Weeping Angels in my opinion so for that i give credit to Chibs.

Yeah, I immediately thought of Adric in that scene as well. Maybe the Doctor worked out how to rescue someone that way after failing to with him? I mean, to be fair, the Doctor theoretically does something similar with Journey Blue in the beginning of 'Into the Dalek' in S8. So, maybe, again, it's something they've since worked out how to do (especially since it probably haunted them about Adric)?
