About the "seen one of these before, it was abandoned, wonder how that happened?" line (or something to that effect). It's referencing The Lodger. The Silence's base was identical to the 'attempted TARDIS' from that episode.

Fun fact about Haunting of Hill House: the series' director Mike Flanagan is a big fan of the show, and actually snuck in a reference to Eleven's "we're all stories in the end" quote into one of the show's episodes. I actually think this is better than part 1. Loads of creepy scenes involving the Silence in the abandoned children's home (bonus points for making a reference to Dr. Renfield from Dracula) as well as some great comedic scenes. I love the way that Richard Nixon is used during these episodes, especially the bit with the Doctor kind of humouring him at the end. Mark Sheppard as Canton is yet another brilliant guest character, being cool, funny, and fitting in very well with the main dynamic of the series. There's a couple of emotional moments, and an absolute brilliant resolution to the story, with the Doctor managing to use the Silence's memory wiping powers against them. And of course, yet another shocking ending that leaves the audience with even more questions than they had at the start and triggering even more wild speculation. I love this two-parter, and it really sets up an exciting and epic story for the series. Now, it's all down to the next episodes to carry on the momentum...

Another fun fact, the older version of Mark shepherds character in the first episode was his father in real life. The one who brought the gasoline to burn the doctors body.
@inspectorhound79314 жыл бұрын
What? No comment on the fact that the man going slowly mad in the orphanage is named Renfrew? My "oh Mark Shepard's accent is different" reaction stems from the fact that he was a recurring character on Leverage, where he used what I presume is his natural accent. Shepard got the closing line in Leverage. Yes, I know that there were scenes after that, but it's his line that sums up the show.

Depends how you define Companion. Personally I think your only a Companion if your on for more than a few episodes and ride in the TARDIS. Having your name in the Title Sequence helps too.

I just love of all the historical characters the show could portray in a good light, they chose Nixon. That's a brainstorm if I've ever heard of one.
@anonymes28844 жыл бұрын
I mean, there's no "official" definition of what constitutes a companion to begin with (I guess the closest thing would be if the BBC refers to them as a companion, which they never do for Nixon to my knowledge) BUT at least one trip in the TARDIS is basically essential IMO (with a possible exception for during the 3rd Doctor's time stuck on Earth) and appearing in more than one episode pretty high up the list too. So you could _maybe_ - if you squint a _lot_ - call Canton a companion. Arguably not Nixon though.

The production team, directors and unit managers (except for one additional US line producer) were the same. What changed was the fact that the cast & production crew got to film on location in the US. And the budget. The BBC saw that Doctor Who was finally getting popular in the US, so capitalised on the popularity by increasing the budget, and flying the crew to film on location.

Paula, every season in new Dr Who has had arc to date, so to recap Season 1: Bad Wolf Season 2: Torchwood (Multiple references in the lead up to the finale in Torchwood Tower and the spinoff series, at least) Season 3: Vote Saxon Season 4: Missing Planets and the recurring spectre of Rose Tyler Season 5: The crack, the pandorica will open. Another pretty good episode. This two parter gave us so many questions that we desperately wanted answered and it set up so many possibilities. The series really could've gone ANYWHERE from here. Series 6 had a lot to live up to after this, we'll see if it lived up to any of that potential... A problem with this episode and this series as a whole is that it throws so much stuff at you that it can get a bit overwhelming at times and leave you confused. After the first 20 minutes of the first episode, this story while very entertaining feels like a whole bunch of set up for the actual relevant and important stuff to happen later on in the series. It gives us more questions than answers and I don't think that makes for a particularly satisfying standalone story. However, I do enjoy how the story suggests that the Doctor may have been responsible for watergate. Watch the scenes with Nixon and the Doctor and notice how the Doctor insists that Nixon record every phone call he receives because he can't trust anyone but the Doctor. Also at the end, when Nixon asks the Doctor if everything's alright now and the Doctor just straight up answers no..... The way the Silence's post hypnotic suggestion was used against them was quite a clever way to defeat them. I really like it when a previously set up plot point comes back to resolve the plot. I'm not particularly comfortable with the Doctor doing it though (and how nonchalant he is about it) because it goes against everything the Doctor believes in. He doesn't even give the silence a chance, he only jokes that he will. He makes no attempt to find out why the Silence are doing what they're doing. He just callously gives the order for their extermination. Which is a very apt word for this situation.... There's a classic Who story where the Doctor refused to destroy the Daleks, when he had the perfect opportunity. Doing this undermines the whole point of the "do I have the right" speech from said story, one of the most iconic moments in Doctor Who history. Not only is he committing genocide on an alien race, he's also manipulating the human race to do his bidding. He's robbing them of their free will and turning them into unwilling murderers...... It's a really horrible way to resolve this story. Another problem with this story is that we never find out what the Silence's purpose is? What was their ultimate plan as far as this story goes? What were they trying to achieve by kidnapping Amy (which makes even less sense in the context of future events in the show, but we'll get to that in due time). We don't find out much about the Silence in this story, which makes the Doctor's actions against them seem even more harsh because they didn't really do THAT much to earn it. Another thing that doesn't make sense. Why did the Silence need to kidnap a child and put her in the spacesuit to kill the Doctor? The spacesuit controls itself, the person inside isn't in control! They could've just had an empty spacesuit go up to the Doctor and kill him. Why go through all the effort to kidnap a child? Especially since the search for that child will only lead back to them?
@beesbrownies4 жыл бұрын
I like the way he's kinda twisted, but I agree with all your points. As we see later, the thing this Doctor specifically does is loses it when those loved are in danger
@supernovaleftover18124 жыл бұрын
Some good points, but I don't think the Doctor is encouraging people to kill the silence, I think instead he's neutralising their main weapon by making them go into hiding. If they can no longer show themselves for fear of being attacked, they can no longer influence people's actions. River's a different kettle of fish all together though, but that's River for you, badass to the core. As for why they needed to kidnap a child, I think I can explain that too, but don't want to give away a massive spoiler to Paula, as watching her try to figure it out is always entertaining.

fun fact: there's actually a small transmittion blip in the exact place where the silence where added on the original appolo 11 broadcast, but it's only a 1 millisecond thing most don't notice. the orignal line was actually "one small step for A man" which.. you know makes more sense since "man" plural makes no sense in that context since its just a synonym for man kind. but the blip disrupted the A. the doctor accidentally canonically made everyone misquote it is what im saying.

I thought the kiss at the end would get more discussion. What that implies, since their interactions are roughly reversed, is that the Doctor and River have kissed a lot in Rivers past, but never will again. And for the Doctor, he's never kissed River, but is going to start doing that. And that sad moment of realization for River...

In the "Silence of the Library" (actually the one after that) she said her last time with him (per her timeline) before he didn't know her any more was visiting the Singing Towers of Darillium. That hasn't happened yet. But then again this River doesn't know that yet.
@jerodast Жыл бұрын
It still bugs me that their interactions happen in EXACTLY reverse order from each other. Either I forget why or there's no reason why... It's fine for her to have like a death prophecy "the day the Doctor meets you is the day you die", but aside from that they could all be in a jumbled up order. Wouldn't it be nice if an episode in 2025 has the Doctor meeting her right before she heads off to the Library! I mean, sad cuz we know what happens, but nice they could actually reflect on years of their relationship at the same time for once.

The only thing I didn't anticipate was what they had done to Amy at this point. That was the only complete surprise of this series. When it comes to reaction channels, I know the natural tendency for them is to try and theorize mysteries out, but I always fear they'll reason something out before the show tells them, thus hampering the reaction a bit.
