I think Nightwish fans should stop debating about who's a better singer, and just enjoy how magnificent they are. I've been listening to their music since 1999 and I have loved every single part of their journey, the good things and the bad ones as well. I wish for this nonsense to stop... Maybe a Nightwish.

You said it. It's music, not a sports competition 'Who's the best singer'. Each 3 hve their master pieces and the less unforgettable ones. And fanatics can answer to this, but in that case, don't excpect a comment from me. Bored of the 'Arya is better than Daeneris, but Sansa is the best'. The majority of course loves Cercei, there's just such wild fire in her voice. Just enjoy what you enjoy. You don't have to list all the things in the world you don't enjoy :)

Agreed however, when I agrue whos the "better" singer, for me its more about the emotions I connect with them not the ability they posess. Tarja for me is the core female singer in nightwish - soley on the grounds she was the one I was introduced to them and I got to love them, but now floor is just unimaginable awsome, but doesn't hit my feelings as much as tarja. So see at least for me it's defenetly more about who I attach the most emotions with, not who I "objectivly" think is the best singer. I have the sme problem with Eluveitie - who always will be only "complete" with anna, but fabienne is just perfect.

The reason people compare the vocalist is because the vocalist and the 3 unique styles define the band. What you have to understand is Nightwish was quite literally built around Tarja and her unique heavily classical influenced style. Don't believe me? Watch the End of Innocence DVD. It's available here on youtube. In it Tuomas recounts the founding of Nightwish. It was originally just an idea of doing a folk music project that he and Emppu came up with. They immediately went to Tarja's apartment to ask her to join them. They knew her from school but had been away in the military. Tarja had also been away, to school studying classical singing and opera. As such Tarja's voice and singing style was much more than what they expected. It was this that inspired them to change their plans drastically. So what was originally planned to be a folk music project became what would later be known as Nightwish, a metal band centered around heavily classical influenced operatic vocals. As such Tarja wasn't just the vocalist, but was the inspiration for the entire concept. As a result of this Tarja's dismissal from Nightwish wasn't just a "change of vocalist" as it might be for other bands. It quite literally changed the band. So, you see, there isn't just one Nightwish, but there are at least 2, and some people (Anette fans) might argue 3 different iterations of Nightwish. All 3 of them are good bands. However, it was the original that made them great and it was the special uniqueness that define not just Nightwish, but a whole new genre. We have to ask ourselves what defines great art and what sets it apart from other art. The answer is that great art is always unique and special and unlike anything that came before it. It defines a new way of looking at something or a hew approach. That's what the original Nightwish was. Go back and listen to the early Nightwish. It wasn't your normal metal band. And Tarja's vocals, style, and stage presence were all a big part of that. The later versions of nightwish may still be good and they may even be more popular among mainstream metal fans, but no way are they as unique and special.

Tarja sure can sing, after all, she is a trained classical "opera" singer and she studied classical singing in Finland and Germany. So it shouldn't be surpising that she sure can sing. And the full operatic voice fits for songs like the Phantom of the Opera (naturally). But I was never convinced that Tarja was a good frontwoman for Nightwish. She wasn't really "rock" and didn't have her heart in this music genre (which she openly admitted). And probably that's why there was never such passion and true delivery of feelings through Tarjas interpretation as there is now via Floors singing. Floor is a naturally born frontwoman and great singer who can also deliver passion and strong feelings.

Well you just started off with the favorite for most of the Tarja die hearts. She is a great singer and has had a great solo career since NW. She has a stage presence as well but doesn't have Floor range or power and I believe Floor has a greater stage presence and personality. The argument over which is better is a silly teenage bout as they are both great and if you like one version of the song over the other that is just a matter of taste they are both great. A good list to work off I believe is: Wishmaster/Tarja (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3u3nXtrZ5Z4bNk) The End of All Hope/Tarja (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3_Zh3WCZtiLb9E) Nemo/Tarja (kzbin.info/www/bejne/raiVl2eGhdWlicU) Amaranth/Annette (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZW9n2qhateNgrM) Meadows of Heaven/Annette (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKnWm6lsgdmFsJI) Ghost Love Score(Wacken)/Floor DONE Shudder Before The Beautiful (Wembley)/Floor (kzbin.info/www/bejne/baC0aaaEiL6Lo7M) I want My Tears Back (Wacken)/Floor (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZKQmYVteL6VrbM) Annette was a better studio listen as her LIVE versions don't seem to be liked by many fans. These should allow you to scratch the surface of NW as I am sure many others will more than fill out the list well beyond my few offerings. Journey continues and we are all along for a great ride thanks to you.

Believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera was Tarja's very last performance before the band had to let her go. The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path and that there was some influence by her husband Marcelo Cabuli that she would do better out on her own, separate from the band. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all good friends since childhood and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette and she was with them for a time until she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer. The song The Poet and The Pendulum, which was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it is his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The song is in 5 parts. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful.

Nice reaction. When I clicked to watch the vid had 1 up and 3 downvotes. Which normally is an indicator that someone has pissed off the fans. Watched the video and can see no reason for it. I am guessing that because you didn't say Tarja is better than Floor you may have annoyed a couple of hardcore Tarja fans. It's odd, you don't meet many Floor fans who dislike or even hate Tarja, you do find plenty of Tarja fans who really dislike Floor, I don't get it, but that's the way it is. I just figure that if you prefer the operatic vocals, you'll likely prefer Tarja, if you prefer about anything else, you'll prefer Floor. Unfortunately there is a split among Nightwish fans, those who feel that Tarja cannot be replaced and those that feel that not only could she be replaced, but eventually was replaced with someone who is better for the band (Floor). Personally I liked the band with Tarja, she is extremely talented. However, her vocal range was limited to the operatic end of things, not a bad hing, but it kept the bands music focused in a way to compliment that voice. Now with Floor, Tuomas can throw anything at her and Floor can sing it. Floor brings a larger range of singing styles and abilities to the band and is why many feel she is perfect. I love Tarja, it was Tarja era Nightwish that got me in to the band, but honestly it's Floor era that has made me near obsessive over the band and it's music. Finished video and now the likes vastly outnumber the dislikes, as it should be, you have great reactions to Nightwish, no matter who is singing. Your Poet one especially is going to be something I watch again a few times in the future. Keep going buddy and next you really need to get The Greatest Show on Earth done :)

I see the Siren and Wishmaster mentioned below. Yes! Also I don't see mentioned these other gems all from the same DVD "End of an Era:" Ever Dream (a little bit different from Floor's delivery and worth comparing), Sleeping Sun (also a little bit different from Floor's and well worth comparing), Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan (a soft, non-metal love ballad sung in Finnish; well worth hearing for the sheer beauty of the music), and a special gem not to be missed, Creek Mary's Blood (a tale about the Trail of Tears in which Tarja is joined by part-native American musician John Two Hawks). A pre-emptive caveat about Creek Mary's Blood: It's a beautiful performance of a beautiful song, but sure as there's shit in a duck, as soon as you post it somebody will pipe up to pour nasty comments about John Two Hawks allegedly being a "fake Indian" and other blah-blah-blah criticisms based entirely upon rumors that can all be traced back to one single blog post by some angry person who had an axe to grind for some unknown reason. You cant go wrong with Nightwish. Everything they do is great. My favorite of the three female singers is Floor. But there all good. Not to leave out the killer voice of Marco.

Many great ones from this concert, Creek Mary's Blood is a favourite of mine - then you have Pink Floyd cover 'High Hope' with Marco on vocals - but really you can't go wrong with anything 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Ironically a loot of the songs you've hard by floor are probably songs from Tarja's era. Unfortunately so many of the reactions online for songs like Romanticide and Ghost Love Score are of Floor's versions, but they are actually songs from Tarja's era and (IMHO) sound much better with Tarja performing them. And for the whiners out there that's not me saying that Tarja is better, just that I believe she performs many is thiose early era songs better - not at all surprisingly given they were written with her vocal style in mind. As for other songs to recommend from Tarja, some of my favourites are: - White Night Fantasy - Sleeping Sun - Ghost Love Score - Nemo - Dead Boys Poem - Deep Silent Complete - Ever Dream - She Is My Sin - The Siren - Two For Tragedy That's 10, and believe me when I say that I REALLY struggled to keep the list at 10. Tarja was the bands lead singer for the longest I believe, and so with the sample size being larger it is probably logical that alot of their best material is from that era. There were also some really good songs from Annettes "Dark Passion Play" era too. Sadly I don't feel they have made a lot of standout music since Floor took over, which is probably why most of the modern recommendations you get are of Floor doing live performances of songs written in the Tarja or Annette era's. And i certainly don't blame Floor for that, as Thuomas is really the brains and creativity behind the band, and its been so long (and emotional) for him that he's probably finding it hard to keep producing material of the same standard and originally.

This song is an example of why so many fans were so upset when Tarja was let go. Still, I feel I do not understand all the who is the better singer comments, as each have their strengths and are excellent vocalists. If you'd like to check out some of Tarja's solo work, I like to recommend the Tarja - 6 Songs - Live at Wacken 2016 video found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4akq4WEbqiibdU This video contains 3 'plugged in' songs from Wacken Open Air (Including an awesome duet with Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy) and 3 acoustic songs. The acoustic songs include one of her original songs, as well as (2) covers, Slipknot's Vermillion and Rammstein's Ohne Dich, both of which will pull on the heart strings.

hah - i dont think you can find a "bad" Nighwish performance - no matter who the lead singer is... this performance was great on so many levels - and the audience reaction tells the tale... Thank you, for another great reaction Vid !!!

I really like Gethsemane, She is my Sin, and Sleeping Sun from the Tarja era. I'm not saying you should compare the two because they are both terrific singers, but it might be interesting to hear the Tarja version of Sleeping Sun and then watch the live version with Floor in Tampere.

I know most people are amazed with how good Floor is (and rightfully so), and I prefer Floor aswell, but that doesn't mean that Tarja are not great. I love the Phantom of the opera, but also Wishmaster, Planet hell from the same show.

Tarja was fired immediately after this concert, hence End of an Era. If you want a performance from the Tarja era that can come anywhere close to the level of emotion of Poet, then I suggest Dead Boy's Poem (From Wishes to Eternity DVD.)

I'm not sure if you have reacted to Anette-era songs yet? If not now would be a good time to do show, i'd recommend Amaranth. thats certainly the most popular (atleast by views) song by Anette. She is also very different from Tarja or Floor and i personally like that about her, some may not like it, some will love it. Give it a try :=)
