Wow, as a german with almost no connection to that southern rock as a genre, I‘ve learned a lot from you today. Of cause I know Wilson Pickett, the Allman Brothers and a lot of the other musicians you mentioned here. But to learn about how all this is connected is most interesting. I think I‘ll dig deeper into this. Thank you.

You are one of my favorite reactors. Top five. Up there with Charismatic Voice, Tank the Tech, Doug Helvering, Wings of Pegasus and Charlie Carlotta. I really like the industry insight and historical perspective you bring. "Where do sounds come from?" "What makes a band great?" I know what I like, and what I don't. But I really like learning some of the whys in there for me. Thank you.

You mention TankTheTech... i just had some incredibly fun hours with his Eskimo Callboy playlist, and now i so need Eric to watch "Hypa, Hypa" or "Pump it!"

This is my genre and I loved your commentary. You're right. This is bonfire, swimming hole, up in the woods, good time music. I love your channel. You've introduced me to bands I've never heard of and I've enjoyed every minute of it. Wonderful European bands that I can't believe I missed out on for years. But I always go back to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, etc. I've seen most of them in concert and it's a laid back, rockin' experience. Thanks Eric. I'm lovin' this journey.

Wilson Pickett is a name I know from my parent's music taste. I am from The Netherlands by the way.

You brought back some memories of some great music. Having always been a fan of another band to come out of Muscle Shoals, The Band, I've always had a soft spot for Southern Rock. Great information about the start of the sound.

....did have to do something, what i normally do on slavik spoken or Asian channels, i open an second tab with google, for some translation and clarification:D. Thy a lot, really enjoyed this lesson, even dont regret at all that i had to rewind it couple of times, bcs, when you get emotional, the pro Announcer stays, but he raises the tempo, and as an german, i struggle to follow the heard word, and then transform it into my schoolenglish and third step compute the info. Or you dont and i just can cope with the drive:) Allman brothers i know thx to my Dad, have to admit, just for that i didnt like them, but forgive an teen, thx. Interesting Story, again, and precious insights how interwoven this is. For me, as an uneducated German in terms of Southern Rock, it were always the dirty G of Gibbons ZZtop, together with Ford Eliminator Coupe, Beards and Womens Legs in perfect Shape till the ground, what Texas, Tennesee and co would sound. ZZ top were quite Famous and well heard in Germany starting 80s, even before Eliminator, they already got Airtime on German TV, thats where i saw them first. You rounded that all up in my eyes, thx for that, keep em coming, i stay anyway:) Stay Healthy NW Army Bavaria North out.

Nice! Loved this upload! Allman Bros are just crazy good! I had the luck to sing By and By (Carter Family) with Leon Russell on piano at a small house party. I would say Russell was a bluesman, but southern rock to me.

I pride myself on having a deep knowledge of rock history. But man, you taught me something there. Great history lesson! Just as you appreciate us listeners introducing you to Nightwish and other artists, I would love to hear other deep dives on artists we may not have fully appreciated. Well done, Eric.

That was, for me, something that from yesteryear. And that makes me suggest a song which is from last year. Again a Nightwish song, Music from the Human:Nature album. Please take the song from the Napalm YT. It is the studio version, but also the text appears. Oh, it is also the first track from the album. If anything Tuomas stretched both the band and himself. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKjdaGCebrF2erc

Just a great way to play to your strengths Eric. I grew up in Jacksonville FL in the 70's and went to the same high school as Lynard Skynard (a few years after them). I think you should do one of these "historical context" videos at least once a month, maybe every two weeks. I live in Texas now and would love for you to explain how Lightnin' Hopkins & T-bone Walker led to Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Tops.
@TedinCalgary19522 жыл бұрын
I really did learn something here. A few quick points (perspective: Toronto, circa 1964-1972): I heard "Midnight Hour" so many times (especially at high school dances) that I think if I heard it one more time I'd get a migraine. I have to admit though, the song you played here I have never heard before. And for the "far north", of course, some southern rock penetrated, and some did not. Allman Brothers definitely did, Wilson Pickett not so much (although I definitely knew who he was). As for what constitutes the "southern rock" sound, the track probably most often requested (and played) for "reaction videos" (for "newbies" to southern rock) is "Free Bird" by Lynerd Skynard. Hope to hear your analysis of that some day! Other popular choices would be Stevie Ray Vaughan (which I mentioned in a comment previously), but I should also include a "hats off" to Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Great idea to take a day and inform everyone of some of the background to this music! Thanks! Keep well ...

I've sent notification, the authorities are on their way (~_^) I would love to hear you do something similar to "The New Orleans Sound". I lived there and thereabout for 20 years, and while I have a loathing of many things about the place, there is that grand feeling when hearing "That Sound" as diverse as it is now. The core being The Meters, Neville Brothers, Radiators, Dr. John, Professor Longhair, and how it bleeds into so much. Now, if I could just find a good Shrimp PoBoy.

Great choice! Errrr....2nd base= what? "I don't know... third base." And to nerd out; the defining "tone" of most if not all of Southern rock is the "Sweet" major 3rd used in the pentatonic scale.
@TedinCalgary19522 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! With all the international traffic on reaction sites these days, I don't know with your reference to "Errr ... 2nd base =what?", whether you are N. American, and familiar with the famous skit "Who's On First', or outside that orbit, and are genuinely unclear as to what (I presume) is Eric's reference here. However, to make things absolutely transparent, it was a famous comedy routine (ultimately performed hundreds of times) by the American duo of Abbott and Costello. The most watched version is at kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYTLfnRuatWpbq8, a video which as of today has 127K "likes", 10,616 "Comments", and just under 15 million views! Have a great day! .... T.C.

Whenever I see or hear Duane layin' it down like only he can I can't help but feel a bit conflicted. Although I'm grateful for all that we were given, I can't help but feel cheated when I wonder what might have been. Just gone far too soon....
