Grammy number one under their belts for this! Rumour has it only cost them $400 to record. They recorded it in a closet and filmed it in Avi and Kevin’s kitchen. Kevin’s eyes couldn’t take the contacts which is why he’s wearing the glasses. They’re still singing this in concert today and it sounds just as good!

Fun fact, every song you watch of theirs has a live version just as amazing. Almost exactly the same as the video. They are just as amazing live. If you want to compare, the pentaholics love watching anything pentatonix. They do amazing things with covers, but they also do original music.

I saw them in Toronto near the end of August of this year! They did this song, Hallelujah, and Bohemian Rhapsody live. Sounds just the same as their videos! Please, do Imagine! "Daft Punk" was their first Grammy winner. Okay, time for a bit of backstory. You know about the origin of Pentatonix, right? About how they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ (2011) with a first prize of $200,000 and a recording contract? Well, that recording contract was with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, who sponsored _The Sing-Off._ So immediately after winning the contract all the members of Pentatonix moved to California in preparation for recording their music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella music. But at this point Pentatonix was totally invested in staying together and making a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. They weren't about to give up just because some short-sighted recording executives said there was no future in their music. So they came up with Plan B. They pooled their winnings, using the $200,000 as seed money. They lived frugally. The men shared two apartments, to cut down on rent. They arranged music and rehearsed every day. And whenever they had a song ready they'd record it on their iPhones and post it to KZbin. It didn't take long for their fans from _The Sing-Off_ to find their channel and subscribe, and even then pentaholics were enthusiastic, so they spread the word around. And some of them became patrons. And Pentatonix started going viral. And someone at Sony sat up and took notice. "Hey, Pentatonix! Here at Sony we've concluded that Epic made a big mistake when they canceled your contract. But we have another subsidiary, named Madison Gate. Would you be interested in a contract with them?" 🤔 Was Pentatonix interested in a recording contract? Darn right Pentatonix was interested! It wasn't a terribly good contract; Madison Gate specialized in movie soundtracks, so they couldn't provide Pentatonix with a recording studio, for instance. But they could and did get a company named FifGen Films to record videos for Pentatonix, and they published albums, and albums bring in money. It was a start. "Daft Punk Medley" was released on PTX Volume II, their second album, in 2013. And in 2014 it won them their first Grammy. And someone at Sony said, "Wait a minute! We got a Grammy from MADISON GATE?! Madison Gate publishes film soundtracks, not Grammy winners! What's going on here?" Eventually they figured it out, and they heard Scott's acceptance speech from the Grammys, where he said that the budget had been $400, much of which went for makeup and a single ring light, and that the audio had been recorded in a closet (it had good acoustics). Hmmm. Think what they could have done with a proper recording studio and a decent budget. "Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since. The Grammy was in the category "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella," a category that did not exist before 2013. Previously it had simply been "Best Arrangement Instrumental." They had to change the category just so they could NOMINATE Pentatonix! And since Ben Bram and Pentatonix were both listed as the arrangers the Grammy was shared with Ben Bram.

At this point Pentatonix counts the hard times to have been a blessing in disguise, see their song "The Lucky Ones." I've been told, and have no reason to doubt, that there was a change in management at Epic which resulted in the contract cancellation, but also, someone at _The Sing-Off_ warned Pentatonix in advance that Epic had been giving some of the earlier winners problems, so it's hard to be certain just what was going on. It MAY have been based on their age and the fact that Kirstie and Scott had dropped out of college and Mitch had only graduated from high school. Or it may have been homopobia. Or a whole combination of things. 🤷‍♀️

I really hope they had some fore-warning about the contract being possibly ripped up and planned for that. Still....it had to have been terrifying stuck in a big city with the dreams they must have all had being shattered. So glad their indomitable spirits didn't allow them to just go home, but to try another way to achieve their goals.

If this had happened to me I'd darn well be out there gloating, big time, but Pentatonix doesn't do that, EVER, and it would be incredibly hard to keep any element of gloating out of any comments. Even a straightforward statement of the facts, with no embellishment at all, would probably include words like "Grammy." I think "The Lucky Ones" is pretty much all they'll ever have to say on the subject.

Thanks for your fun reaction. I subscribed for more PTX especially. They are great live and you might want to check out them doing a live version before you go too deep so you realize that yes, this is real, they are this good. ( both Hallelujah and Daft Pink have live versions). Ideas for next steps: Bohemian Rhapsody, Can’t Hold Us ( cover Macklemore and Ryan Lewis), Imagine, Sound of Silence, any of their medley or evolution videos like Michael Jackson. They won a Grammy for this song and also a Grammy for a collaboration with Dolly Parton and the song Jolene. They also won a Grammy for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, from the ballet Nutcracker. Other covers I like are Gangnam Style, Perfume Medley, The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Say Something, mashups New Rules x Are You That Somebody? and Butter x Dynamite and Radioactive. It is always Christmas with PTX and Mary Did You Know? Oh Come All Ye Faithful ( a must see), Little Drummer Boy, 12 Days of Christmas, Carol of the Bells, Mr. Grinch, and Making Christmas are some of my favs. For originals I like Love Again, Sing, Coffee in Bed and Water. This is a huge rabbit hole because PTX can perform so many genres of music and everything they do is great. Whatever you pick you won’t be disappointed.

Great reaction!! They're astounding! There is another EDM beat song, Love Again they wrote and it's just as incredible...but then so is all their music. You can't go wrong, no matter what you choose to react to next. All their covers are really upgrades and their originals are wonderful. Run To You is an original that Avi and Kevin wrote. It's a 5 part harmony and is simply superb.

You should try PTX Natural Disaster live. It's a great song and Avi kicks ass and put a lot of pressure on the sound system. Live version of Hey Mama/Hit the Road Jack, Avi actually blows the speakers.

It's my favourite of their originals and it has a very cool video with an alien/Steampunk vibe! Mitch sings the lead on it, which is another reason it's my favourite of their originals. I love them all and think they are all incredible singers but I will be a Mitch stan for life!

okay I am going to give you one song that I normally don't give out. PTX had a summer camp series VocalizeU which was to get teens back into music and acapella. The song is "Battlefield" by Jordan Sparks and she joined PTX on stage to sing it. The crazy thing is that they only had *ONE* hour to put the whole song together and whelp go take a listen search "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks & Pentatonix video is not great but the audio is insane

I'm sure others will hit on this, but anyway. They had lost their recording contract because of the company was bought out, and the new company didn't think accepella was worth doing (they did come back a few years later and re-signed them. Anyway, being broke and just getting started, they spent their last $400, and made a deal with a brand-new post/editing company, (The company would do this one free, and PTX would use them exclusively for so long, and would list them as the Post company as as much as possible) then they went to Avi and Kevin's apartment, each one went in a closet by themselves, and recorded their vocals, then they hung blackout curtains in either the kitchen or a bedroom I've heard both from reliable sources, and recorded the visuals, and then did post on Avi's iPad, which is what they recorded everything on. Put it on YT and won a Grammy. There is some debate over exactly what it cost, and where it happened, etc... I may not be right on everything, so if you hear something better go with it, this is just what I"ve heard, as I said reliable sources, people that were either there, or personally know the members. The song Avi referred to, "Run to You" is an original. So many people, especially high school choirs, wanted to cover it, the offered the sheet music so they could. Speaks volumes about them.
