My favorite all time song, there's nothing it hasn't got, poetry, passion and power it's got it all.

When I first got into Zeppelin I had some trouble picking up on John Paul Jones’ contribution at first too. He’s so in sync with his band mates that it took me a while to hear what he was doing. Ain’t no better bassist.

I've heard a few stories of what the tapping is - Bonzo tapping on a guitar case, a table top, a chair seat, or his legs. Suffice to say, it wasn't his drums lol. The bass is amazing - this is another one where you should listen to the isolated parts of this song because it gives you an inkling of the layers it took to create it. It is such a full, rich song. You can "ramble" or "wander" but just remember, "all that is gold, does not glitter; not all those who wander are lost". - another quote from Robert's favorite LOTR.

I think ramble on can mean both but in this song it probably has to do more with moving from place to place. Poor guy had Gollum steal his lady. That’s the power of his “precious.”

Yet another GREAT bass line from jonesy. Ps the tapping is thought to be Bonham tapping on a guitar case

Ramble meaning walk for pleasure or talk/write at length in a confused or inconsequential way.

In this case it means moving on, as in travelling with no specific destination in mind.

It was later when I read "Lord of the Rings", I realised that this song is based on it... Ramble On... and reference to Golum and the Evil one. (I'm a Brit and yes Ramble On is wandering looking for for something some place. They couldn't go on without Bonham...

Robert Plant was a huge fan of The Hobbit/Lord of the rings books and through his popular lyrics in a few of his songs, just about single-handedly became the reason JRR Tolkien's books sold by the millions in the 1970s. Don't forget the hobbit's were 'smokers' - of what we do not know. They used to 'Ramble' around the countryside -take a walk, or a stroll.
