On a Sunday in late1971 I took my imported copy of this album and a portable record player to Sydney's Domain, a gathering spot for Sydney's hippies. It was a few weeks before the Australian release. The response after this song was always "play the album again". Went through a lot of batteries that afternoon. Stairway was "the" track but what a way to end an album. Left you wanting more. A few months later the band made its one and only Australian tour. GOAT.

Bonham was the drummer. And did you know his son about 8 years ago went on tour with them and finally did some old songs that Led Zeppelin would not do because of the respect of Bonham. The famous one was Kashmir.

Led Zeppelin , the Greatest Band Ever! I’ve seen Robert Plant three times in concert. ❤️ Their musical influences were from the Deep South of Black America soul and blues artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. PS , your new hobby is to listen to every Zepp song every chance you get!

A reworking of the song by the same name by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy recorded in 1929 about the flood that wiped out the Mississippi Delta in 1927. It's effects helped add to the Great Migration which began in 1916 where hundreds of African Americans moved north in search of better opportunities (the lyrics near the end "if you're going down south, they've got no work to do, if you go north to Chicago" and "go to Chicago, go to Chicago, sorry but I can't take you"). The sound was achieved through a combination of adding backwards echo effect on the harmonica, several different treatments such as phasing on the vocals, distance mic placement on the drums especially, plus the instruments were slowed down a half step in the mixing while the vocals remained at speed to help add to the slow, sludgy sound. The result is a wicked creation of slightly menacing blues that pummels your eardrums into submission. Masterpiece.

The basic track for WTLB was recorded at a slightly quicker tempo. Returning the sped up tape back to standard speed is what give the drums their hypnotic trance like effect on the listener. You can hear how the cymbals take longer to decay. One of the few times Bonzo was happy with the way his drums sounded on a record. Great reaction lads. Cheers, RNB

This was recorded in an old Mansion hence the echo effect of the drums, I'm not sure if all of it was. But certainly the drums. It's a copy of A 1929 track about the Mississippi floods. Not sure who wrote the original but they don't sound that similar. Led Zeppelin altered it for the better i think. Keep up the good work..

@ 6:35 when the guitar goes backwards 😁 They tried several times to play this live but it never really came off because everything is slowed down except for Robert's voice. LOTS of studio wizardry going on.

The very few available live performances of this song are AWESOME! Unfortunately they retired this number after a short time and only a few performances. But Zeppelin always altered the studio versions for concerts, usually slower with extended solos from Jimmy. Or doing certain songs acoustically like at Earl's Court. Greatest live band ever with each band member being either the best ever or one of the best ever. Jimmy Page is a musical genius and also had an amazing eye for talent.

If Jimmy just cut DAZED & CONFUSED down from 30 mins to say 12-15 mins, The boys could fit a few more songs during there 2 1/2 Hours Sets which is the avg of my x 4 Shows. 7/28/73, 2/3/75, 2/8/75 (Sitting 5th Row Center) and 6/7/77. Mate,,, this and ‘since I’ve been loving you’ are two of the greatest blues rock songs ever!!! And is another blues song ripped off by zeppelin from delta blues artist “Kansas Joe McCoy” who was buried in an unmarked grave, he was ripped off by many other bastards in the music industry, start listening to Zappa, he’ll tell you all about it!!!!!!!! And guys please, your voices are louder than the music, so either don’t talk while your listening, cause it’s blowing our eardrums out or buy a mixer......

We're working on getting the audio just right. I've had to increase the volume in post because people were saying it was too low. This makes our voices louder too. I'll increase the volume of the music (again) in the mixer so I don't have to do it in post.
