In this video I react to the clip Requiem pour un fou performed by Lara Fabian and Johnny Haliday
Requiem pour un fou is a song by Johnny Hallyday written by Gilles Thibaut and composed by Gérard Layani. It was released as a single on February 10, 1976.
Story
About Requiem pour un fou, Jean-François Brieu considers that, by its theme, it is an "anti-Hallyday song par excellence" which had everything to confuse the singer's audience, but which, by its bombast even overcomes reluctance and finally seduces the public2.
Requiem pour un fou tells the story of a man who, refusing to lose her, killed his wife, while claiming to love her (like, very often, the authors of feminicide)3. Surrounded by the police at the scene of the murder, under the beams of the spotlights, he harangues the agglutinated crowd in search of the outcome. The madman knows that death will come with the sunrise4:
"I'm warning you don't come near
Whether you are cops or onlookers
I kill the one who takes a step
I will not give a gift
[...]
Turn off all your spotlights
And turn down those pointing guns
No I won't fly away without her
[...]
I was just crazy, but out of love
She made me crazy, crazy for love
[...]
I loved her so much that to keep her, I killed her
[...]
The day dawns, the night fades
[...]
I will open wide the shutters
Break my heart I'm ready
I want to fall asleep forever near her
[...]
I am only a madman A madman with love, a poor madman Who is dying of love”
(Text Gilles Thibaut, excerpts)
Jean-François Brieu draws a parallel between the song and Marcel Carné's film Le jour se lève (19395), featuring a murderous Gabin, barricaded in his apartment haranguing the crowd and the police from his window, while the security forces the order await dawn to launch the assault.
The first extract from the album Derrière l'amour, Requiem pour un fou was released in February 1976 and quickly became one of the singer's great successes, which he regularly performed on stage.
This title was performed by the artist's group on December 9, 2017 at the Madeleine church during the popular tribute paid in Paris after the disappearance of Johnny Hallyday.
Reception
The title ranks No. 1 in sales in France for 3 weeks in the spring of 19766 and sells more than 500,000 copies7. He reappeared in the rankings, following the death of the singer in December 2017.
