The Police thing is a bit of mutual admiration. Sting spent some time with Rush at Le Studio, heard what they were doing with sequencers and came back to Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland with "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic." And that doesn't sound like Rush at all, but there were some things he heard that led to that idea. Anyway, I have a feeling you'll love this one after hearing it again. Like many others have said, it is intense and goose-bump inducing live.

Oh, and I don't get the "the guitars were buried on Signals" thing, either. But what Alex does on this album is very different and probably some of his best work in a certain fashion. It is VERY hard to replicate. You'll notice in a few of the songs the guitar lines kind of snake along and evolve instead of repeating.

Rush is my favorite band "The Police" are my second favorite band. There were a lot of people like that when I was in high school. I've always thought this album sounded like it was crafted from white-noise. As you point out, reverb on cymbals and ever present bright synth, this is the most "wall of sound" album they ever did.

This was a very relevant album in the mid 1980's. The embassy had been bombed in Beirut, the Russians were on the march, we were at the height of Cold War where I remember doing duck and cover drills under our chairs at school. The movie War Games had come out the year before, the original Red Dawn was huge in 1984 and there was lots of talk about nuclear war. At the same time, just like the whole global warming scare, the scare back then was acid rain. All you heard about was acid raid destroying the forests, we were all going to melt, there would be no drinking water etc... Back then it was sulfur dioxide rather than Carbon Dioxide. The Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line or Early Warning Line, was a system of radar stations in the northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska which was the first detection system if Russia launched nuclear weapons at the US. We had B-52's in the air at all times and ran lots of spy aircraft upto and sometimes across that line. I know several people who were stationed up there ready at any moment to make a call to launch a strike. At the same time, the song speaks about human interpersonal relationships that were strained at the time. At the same time, you had the rise of the National Organization for Women's movement which was putting a huge strain on male/female relationships. Huge divorce rate, huge abonnement of children to be the first latch key kids. There was a sense of dread as traditional roles in the family were being strained and because both parents were now working to keep up the household, it was like the adults were just going through revolving doors. It's a great song in describing the strains and fears of the times both externally and internally.

I was 17 when this came out, cold war was out there, but didn't affect kids very much that I remember. We never had to do duck and cover drills in class or anything like that. That was more 1950's. Anyway great album

Fun bacobit of trivia... the music video for this song features Geddy's son Julian. I always liked this song. I like the persistent driving bass and the way Alex's guitars float in. It's got a nice beat, and the chorus and verses are very singable. I seem to remember this album and tour being where Neil added in a full synth kit to his kit. .... Wow. I just found the greatest site for Neil's drumming. It lets you pick each album and tour and shows you an overhead graphic of the drum layout. The site said this tour was the first time his kit rotated and he had a full synth kit he'd play on for some songs. The synth drums I don't think sounded as full and rich at the time, but it was the 80s and the styles catered to electronica and the artificial. Thankfully we moved away from that.

Synth heavy are Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and, holy cow, Hold Your Fire, but Presto stripped out a lot of the synths... So three albums, including this one. Okay, Long Time Rush fan here. Been a fan since, A Farwell to Kings. The are my favorite band, saw them 37 times. But this album and tour holds a special place for me in my life. I pulled off an amazing feat by actually meeting all three of them. Was on November 5th, 1984, Philadelphia Spectrum. It was the second night of two sold out shows. So, basically me and a friend of mine, a fellow drummer got backstage passes and managed to get behind the stage (the pit) where two limos waited. All three autographed our tour booklet and off to a party on the Delaware river they went. Anyway, I regressed. In regards to your comment about the synth is this album Ged transitioned from all analog synthesizers that you heard on signals (and prior albums) to all digital synth. Basically, Geddy switched from the Moog Taurus bass pedals to Korg PK midi pedals which trigger samples. He also switch from the Mini Moog and Oberheim syths to the PPG wave synthesizer which are all digital. This is why you're hearing that glassy type sound. Which I'm not a big fan of, I prefer the Oberheim, and mini Moog/ Taurus bass pedals. The analog sound has more warmth to it. I find that the digital syths you here sometimes cover the same frequency ranges as Alex's guitar sound. But, there's still great songs on the album. "One of which is, After Image. It's in my top ten. Geddy doesn't play bass guitar - all synth. It is there most passionate, heart wreching, lyrically emotional songs they have ever done in my opinion. Neil's lyrics where about a friend of the band that was killed in a car accident. The album overall has a fusion type sound to it. A quote from the movie Forest Gump somes up the band. "Rush is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get." And it's BIG...BIG box.

New to the channel and have really been enjoying your reactions to Rush! I was one of one those who saw them on the warmup mini-tour in September of '83 at Radio City. They played prereleases of "Afterimage," "Red Sector A," "Red Lenses," and "Kid Gloves" (which Geddy introduced as "Child Gloves"). I don't think Neil had completed his 360-degree kit by that point. As for the album, I always liked the dark, dense, compressed - yet spacious - mix. It has an urgency about it which reflected the general anxiety many were feeling in the early 80s. The other thing is that P/G marks a distinct change in the direction of Neil's writing toward more personal themes expressed in a simpler, more direct way. The phrase "You sometimes drive me crazy, but I worry about you" isn't like anything he had wirtten before. You'll notice that "Afterimage" takes things further in that direction. Anyway, great stuff. Looking forward to more!

Absolutely correct. Rush were there for the first ever shuttle launch. I was a teenager at the time and it seemed like such an amazing accomplishment to launch something that could go to space, come back, and be launched up there again. Also as a fantasy reader, lyrics like "venting vapors like the breath of a sleeping white dragon" really hit a lot of buttons for me. the main theme is also great, sounding like something taking flight and heading out to space. I don't know, it's always been a favorite for me, even as I realize it's a bit of a gimmick song.

Nice cat. I'm a cat person too. I myself like Countdown a lot, when that part kicks in when he sings the "the air is charged.... Excitement so thick you can cut it with a knife....", love the music during that part, the drums are killer. As far as this album goes it was just always kind of okay for me but one of the fewest played out of the Rush catalog. At the time I still hadn't got completely used to their new look and sound and it was such a huge difference from just a few years earlier. You should watch the original video for this song Distant early warning, they look really goofy, especially Alex, lol. As the years went by I liked this album a little more than originally in the '80s, there's some nice parts to the album but overall for me it's nowhere near as good as Signals or the majority of their other albums, in my bottom 5, but I've known people that love this era of Rush best and rarely will listen to anything from the 70's or after the 80's.

If there is album that says it's 1984 it's this one. The guitar tones, drum sounds, synths, etc just screams the time. What's odd is during the mid 80s music was going in all different directions with the technology coming out yet a lot of it sounded eerily the same. As stated many fans bailed at this time. I didn't really bail till after power windows. I still owned all the albums and spun then occasionally, it wasn't until Vapor Trails that I felt they got their groove back.

I've known of RUSH since the 70's, I've know The Police since the 80's and never have I thought of them being the same. The Police never sounded like RUSH to me and except for that little solo on Digital Man (Walking On The Moon), that's probably the closest I ever heard RUSH sounding like The Police. I do know however that Neil had a good relationship with Stuart Copeland. Seen video of the two of them jamming on more than one occasion.

Alex was losing his mind with all the synth. Geddy loved it, but things came to a head and they finally went back to their roots with Counterparts.

This album came out at the time the cold war with Russia was in overdrive. Nuclear missiles in Europe were being increased. It was a big deal at the time. This album reflects the time in which it was recorded.

Distant Early Warning rocks ! My first and only Rush concert was the Grace Under tour. The small city where I grew up was the opening leg of the tour. My understanding was our small venue was chosen for the kinks to be worked out before heading to larger cities. Man oh man , there were definitely some kinks. My recollection was Geddy introducing the song "New World Man" and triggering a sequenced track. Two seconds later , he got back on the mic and said , "Well this isn't New World Man." The show was paused about thirty minutes while the techies fiddled with the synths. it was still a fantastic concert and a thrill for me.

You should check out some of the music videos from these 80s albums. They're so bad that they're good

Justin your right the sound quality is off
@JustinPanariello2 жыл бұрын
yeah I know. sucks. It happened i think also on my ESL videos. no idea why the ripped quality sucks...using the same process as every video I do. For some reason this album didn't come out good.

Neil was a huge fan of The Police. The album will grow on you, trust me.

Rush sempre me surpreendeu. Todos os seus lançamentos me fizeram refletir o quanto eles tiveram extrema progressão em seus trabalhos elaborados e marcantes. É por isso e por serem tão fantásticos músicos que o Rush é a minha banda preferida de todas. 🌟✨🇧🇷

The cold war weighed heavy on Neil’s lyrics…, you kind of had to live it to get it. There are a few songs with some redeeming value on Grace Under Pressure , this wasn’t one of them. Time spent with cats is never wasted…, Sigmund Freud.

That sounds like a 128 kbps mp3 (if you ripped music in the 90s, you know what i mean)
@JustinPanariello2 жыл бұрын
yeah I know i don't understand why or what happened. What I heard was great quality but for some reason what got ripped quality sucked. Same thing happened to I think ESL... idk why. Same process as all the rest of the videos i've done.

Stuart and Neil were friends but I really think the Police were the Police and Rush were Rush. I love GUP nearly as much as Permanent Waves, it was such a change for them which I loved and the last song my top five of all time, I'm a guitarist that loves big powerful chords 😁🐈⬛👍

This one wasn't super popular when it first came out. It's a really dark and bleak tone for the album. But I've always loved this one, especially this track.

It's weird that I never noticed a big problem with audio quality until it's mentioned but this song definitely sounds like it's being played through an mono speaker AM radio...Sorry eh.
@JustinPanariello2 жыл бұрын
yes I know sorry this album will be like that unfortunately. unknown reason. Using the same process I do all my videos with... idk.

its the only song off Signals i'm not into. Signals is a smash besides that song. Also I wasn't there for it sooooo :shrugs: maybe thats partly why
@michaellynch24972 жыл бұрын
To me the guitar solos are way better on Signals, and I was disappointed with this record as where I expected a solo there were sort of half chord bursts or keyboards as you will find out.

I must have annoyed every fecking neighbour in my street when GUP came out - by blasting it over and over 😀 This is a killer album - again not a bad song on it. Yes there are stronger ones and weaker one, but they're all good quality - which is what we expect from Rush. I keep saying this, but these songs will definitely grow on you. Look how you didn't like Chemistry - but after a couple of listens you started to like it and see / hear it in a different light. I like what you're doing, but there's one massive difference to what we did back in the day. Every time an album was released, that was it - we'd play it over and over and these songs got in our ears. We waited until the guys came on tour and went to as many gigs as we could afford - and then it might be eighteen months or two years or even longer before anything new was released. So the latest album (and older ones) was all that we had to listen to. Imagine if you couldn't hop straight to the next album, you listen to the current one and really get to know the songs and hear new things occasionally. A lot of your time is probably taken up with this Chanel - but if you get a chance, listen to the albums a few times - you will get hooked - definitely.

I do listen to the album several times back to back to back before I do my overview video. I did that for all of them except Moving Pictures I think. and Permanent Waves I think I only listened to one other time. Signals I've heard a dozen or so times and GUP probably half a dozen times.

Yeah, this audio has a wet blanket thrown over it. Any theories anyone???
@JustinPanariello2 жыл бұрын
yes I know I mentioned in the video. Sorry i know the audio quality sucks on this album. It happened on my ESL videos also, idk why. Literally doing the same process as every one of my videos and for some reason...idk. sucks.
