Just as a little info: The reason Onew cried is because Onew had to undergo throat surgery back in 2014 for polyp removal and mucuous membrane reconstruction. After the surgery he couldn't talk for three months and there was a high chance, his voice wouldn't be the same and he wouldn't been able to ever sing again, the way he could before. He had to basically train his voice all over again. The entire vocal training he had when growing up was nothing worth anymore. This concert was the first one they had after his surgery and on top of being nervous, from not performing for so long, he also didn't know if his voice would be able to pull through the entire concert. For his solo, he chose this song because the original singer of "rainy blue" had went through the same thing as Onew did and composed this song as his comeback song. So taking all that into account, he just got overwhelmed with emotions during this performance, hence he broke out in tears.

Not only did the original singer of Rainy Blue have vocal cord surgery, it failed and he's never sung again.

The reason why the audience screams so load and Onew cries during this performance of "Rainy Blue" is because this was Onew's first solo performance since having vocal surgery. It was a really scary surgery because there was no guarantee that he would ever be able to sing again, let along at the same quality as he did before the surgery. Onew spent about 3 months after his surgery not being able to speak at all in order to give his vocal cords time to heal and then he had to learn to sing all over again. This performance was proof to himself and the fans that he could still do it and that nothing had changed. This song was also super meaningful because the original Japanese songwriter had the same surgery as Onew and he was never able to sing again.The songwriter composed "Rainy Blue' after his surgery and the song is about how he felt now that he had to give up something that was so precious to him, etc. The song is kind of saying how the world around him kept moving forward while time stood still for him during his recovery because of how hard it was to deal with the fact that he might not be able to keep singing. For the writer, he kept chasing the happiness of singing but sadly could no longer do so. Luckily Onew's surgery had a much better outcome than the composer and it seems to not have had much of an affect on his voice. Thank goodness because the world would be a much sadder place if we could no longer hear Onew's beautiful voice. :D

This song was his first solo after he had vocal chord surgery, he was silent for 3 months and they said he might loose some of his range, the original Japanese singer of the song had the same surgery and lost some of his voice so he was apprehensive when he did it... It was a very emotional song for those reasons and because it is beautiful

Onew has a truly unique voice. It is an incredible performance, it is magical and with Taeemin at the piano they make it cry from beginning to end. My children Onew & Tae are amazing, I love SHINee

Ahh!! Rainy Blue will always be that special performance. Twas the 1st song he performed by himself after his surgery, 6 months of not talking/singing. All his anxiety not getting his voice back, not to perform anymore bottled up, it’s scary really.

He was crying bcos this was his first solo performance after undergoing a vocal surgery. They weren't sure if he could sing again after that surgery so yeah it was pretty emotional. if you want to catch hardcore feels from a shinee performance watch "from now on" /watch?v=kVBVxhGkam8. it was from their first concert after jonghyun's passing and they sang the track and kept in jonghyun's vocals and left a mic for him. i still bawl when i hear this song, especially if i watch the performance because you can see how broken hearted they all are. they also do a lovely little tribute to him with roses.
