Witchers are making their living by killing "magical" monsters and by their codex they should not intervene in humans problems. Geralt usually do intervene in problems of humans as much as he tries not to... so his answer killing monsters was methaphor because in his eyes those soldiers were monsters. In witcher story we see that many times humans are as awful as some magical monsters.

@@Ely97 I can understand the cannibalism and the looting (as you said it's no man's land and there's a war going on) but you forget her third crime, killing wounded people to take their stuff. That's plain murder and in both Nilfgaard and the Northern realms that's the death penalty. The whole point (which most people miss) is that Geralt, by refusing to take the lesser evil approach (what Vesemir tells him to do, take the money and leave) ends up killing 3 soldiers who were doing their job (bringing to justice a murderer, and yeah, they are pieces of shit too) and leaves a cannibal murderer alive and free. As other people have said, in the end, whatever you pick there will always be "evil".

Witchers are created from little boys who are taken from their parents and then trained to fight monsters. They are forced to undergo mutations brought on by magic and potion. Only a small percentage of boys survive the process. Once they reach adulthood, these young mutated men are then sent off into the world to try to make a living killing monsters for townsfolk in order to keep them safe. They travel from town to town bargaining for a price to slay the monsters. It's a gruelling life often cut short. There is a saying that a witcher never dies in his bed, meaning he never dies in comfort surrounded by loved ones, and he never dies old. If the monsters he hunts don't kill him, then humans do. As a result of their mutations, witchers are often feared and hated by humans. Feared because of their superhuman strength, speed, sword skill and healing power, but also hated for what they are - sons who were taken from their families to be either killed or turned into witchers. Older witchers are the ones who take these young boys from their families and turn them into young witchers to replace the older ones killed. This has been the way of the witcher world for centuries. Someone has to kill the monsters.

Well, would take a long post to explain, I really like seeing reactions of non gamers, but something as complex as the witcher would be hard to get. So there was a planet alignment in which several dimensions merged, so magic entered the world of the witcher, some, like witches were infused with magic, some like the witchers are later implanted magic, when they are children, the implantation is said to take away their humanity and they are the most scorned of the magical creatures(Hence the man that pays him spits towards him when he is leaving), but that is a lie, the witchers use that "humanity removed" as a sort of defense mechanism to not feel guilty for not interveining and only doing things for gold, but Geralt is not like that The books and the games are based on Geralt's adventures and how despite trying to live by the code of the witchers, not interveining and only hunting monsters for gold, he cannot, and it is all about his inner fight between his code, and what is right, and centers between his relationship with a girl that fate brings to be his protege, Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon Nilfgard is the empire that her father(Who conceived her under another identity as he was hiding and was cursed) rules, and he invades all the rest of the world just for the heck of it, and the whole story is first Geralt protecting her, then, after his sweety betrays both is about him searching for her and reminiscing about some times he had with her, and the games are a sequel, but not canon(Still the best thing ever) The adaptations are garbage, both the polish one, very old and low budget, hated, and the Netflix one which is garbo x2
