The video title is a bit wrong, these are not destinations unknown but actually some of them are the most touristically active. I would suggest to just go out there, grab a train and rent a bike, travel the country. edit: I was holding back a bit, but now I see it mentioning Volendam, Zaanse Schans, Giethoorn.. These are places flooded with tourists and not at all 'best kept secrects'. In fact they are so flooded with tourists, you will not see many Dutch people enjoying these locations. Don't get me wrong, nice video and for non Dutchies probably interesting places to go, just the title and some commentary is misleading.

ps. For when you visit the Netherlands: at mass tourist locations the Dutch will be rude to tourists on bikes, but venture out for 5 mins and we will adore you for visiting our country on bike. You will not meet a more hospitable country when it comes to cycling around, you will be immediatly loved.

i do agree with you on that haha people from Giethoorn are saying they have to many tourists who want to take boat rides and they constantly crash thier boats etc.

The Netherlands has about 30 cities with close to or above 100K inhabitants. I'd say about 80% of them are definitely worth a visit.

Pffff! born and raised in Amsterdam (and still living and loving it there!) but there are so much more beautiful places to discover in the Netherlands! it’s such a small country, take a train, bike or bus and discover more then just the western part, you’ll be surprised!

All tourist traps... Nijmegen is very nice, especially during 'the walk of the world' marches. Eindhoven with it's light festival. Lots of nature parks, when you're looking for more quiet times.
@aristaeus25143 күн бұрын
Tourist traps not so much, you are not being baited or swindled there. But mass tourism? yes, for sure these locations already see masses of tourists a year. All us dutchies in comments, we should create a proper hidden gem list to be honest :P Ill add my hometown Enkhuizen, for its pitoresk and historic city centre with many marina/harbours. The Zuiderzeemuseum and Sprookjeswonderland themepark. The many ways to enjoy the water. Combined with a visit to nearby towns of Hoorn and Medemblik surely worth the visit.

There are about 700 castles in the Netherlands, not counting fortified settlements, palaces and country mansions. The oldest castles date back from the 13th century ... All places mentioned in this video are not hidden gems, they are all very touristy. They are worth visiting though, but don't forget the real hidden gems ...
@angievandebroek59174 күн бұрын
Here we go again. (Sigh...) It's such a shame that this video (and a lot of others) are mainly about the western part of the Netherlands. Beautiful but there are lovely cities and towns in the rest of the country. E g. Groningen, Leeuwarden, Nijmegen, Den Bosch, Breda. These cities are (not only from a tourism perspective) also very interesting. 🙄😊

Let those tourists stay in the west please! We don't need more tourists here in Groningen, it's fine as it is now ;)

This video in itself is very misleading, instead of hidden gems it is a list of very famously known locations flooded with tourists already.

Or just avoid cities for once and Visit small towns in Zeeland where you can still see the scars of the Floods in 1953, where you can breath fresh air coming from the sea and where you can enjoy the beautiful and unique landscape of this province.

Another famous building with striking architecture is Zendgebouw Radio Kootwijk. Area surrounding it is beautiful too if you like taking a walk through nature. It's a 15 minute drive for me, so I do it a lot. I also really like Giethoorn. My father is a guide there, started doing it after he retired. In the summer he's doing that 3-4 days a week, and he always shares so many nice pictures. Very fun job imo.

🤔 Amsterdam has the biggest old-town in Europe, full of architecture from 400 years ago. The northern renaissance took place in the Netherlands and formed the base of today Netherlands and is appreciated and known for it's beauty all around the world by art historians.

I want to add another response to this video: The reason is that I see a lot of Dutch people replying with "tourist traps" In my opinion they aren't traps, genuine interesting places to visit, however they are crowded with tourists and therefore not hidden gems and also why us Dutchies don't go there. Tourist traps are places that make you pay for things that are actualy free, its places that create fake things to lure tourists and exploit them, these places are not that.

I went to Giethoorn as a kid when it was still just a day trip attraction for people from the region. I thought it was boring, water and thatched roofs aren't very special to Dutch kids, Venice impressed me much more. Typical for the Netherlands is that some assistant hotel manager from there took the plane to China in the early 2000s to promote it at a tourism expo and now it suffers from overtourism.

They didn't mention it but there is a folkmuseum in Volendam, which was the highligh of my daytrip there (and it's free with museumkaart). Definitely worth it for anyone who is interested in Dutch culture and/or folk clothing. When it comes to catstles my favourites are Sypestijn, Oud Zuylen and Cannenburg.

On grey rainy days visit places like Rotterdam, Zoetermeer, Arnhem, Vlissingen, Almere. Or in empty fields. Greenish brownish ground with grey skies as far as you can see. You'll understand how much effort the locals put in. Otherwise it still would marshes and rain

Love giethoorn. Still beautyfull a lot is being bought up by Chinese, there is now a group of Chinese investors who are buying up real estate in Giethoorn. These investors recently purchased a tour company, but also a bicycle rental company, a taxi company, a boat rental company and an old hair salon that will serve as a souvenir shop.

Now that you mention Oost Groningen: A very nice place to visit in that province is Bourtange, a small village within a late 16th century star-fortress (with some more village outside the fortress) Since it's pretty much off the beaten track for foreign tourists, you'll mostly find Dutch and German tourists there.

Just a bunch of tourist folders glued together. At 5:55 you see these nice flower fields. Let me tell you that these fields are the most toxic in the country. These fields are covered with pesticides. If you live next to them, your chance of getting cancer is raised severely. Most toxic fields are Lilies.

These are all tourist traps... Most of them I never even visited as a Dutchman. It's funny how the most beautiful places are never shown. Only the Germans seem to know that Zeeland is the best. During the summer, Zeeland gets flooded with Germans and Belgians enjoying their holidays at the beaches. You asked for the best sea food? Zeeland ( Sealand) is where you need to be.

They don't want to know about? Half of them are pretty much tourist traps. As for your question we did the same thing in the 70 and 80 isch we lost a lot of nice buildings nowadays we take care of them and re use the old buildings a lot of churches have turned into appartments for example. Not ideal but at least the building is preserved. Also a lot has been rebuild where it could be done. i would skip the hague not the best city in the netherlands, Den Bosch or Breda are much prettier and there is about a couple of dozen smaller towns that are worth visiting. Also if you like themeparks then Efteling is a must (Thats themeparks not high thrill amusement parks).

1) Haarlem, not a tourist trap. 2) Zaandam, not a tourist trap. (Zaanse schans, yes, but he said "Zaandam") 3) Maastricht, not a tourist trap. 4) Volendam, yes tourist trap. 5) Marken, indecisive, for sure not as much as Volendam. 6) Lisse, not a tourist trap, (if you only go to "De Keukenhof" yeah it is, but still for foreigners a very unique one) 7) Rotterdam, not a tourist trap 8) Delft, maybe, but certainly not the whole city. 9) Giethoorn, yes it's a tourist trap 10) Utrecht, not a tourist trap. 11) Den Hague, not a tourist trap. So we got 2 out 11 tourist traps
