Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fate and melancholia. This is loosely captured by the Portuguese word saudade, or longing, symbolizing a feeling of loss. The word fado means destiny, fate but it is used only for the negative side of it, just like you say it's the cross I have to carry. Fado songs are all very sentimental. Amália Rodrigues was the queen of fado. Richard Gere fell in love with a song called Canção do mar (song of the sea) which was then featured in his movie Primal Fear, sang by Dulce Pontes but the song is originally from Amália Rodrigues. Fado to me is a the style of singing, but that is a label, it is more than that, is a cultural mark something deeper, perhaps like flamenco is to Spanish. About the songs itself, fado singer (fadistas) can sing about anything, love, sadness and even happiness and fun, fado is not only melancholy and sadness, thou that is the more popular subject. Portuguese are historically a people of sailors and travelers and so everyone add someone far away from home, for years or months so this "saudade", loosely translated to "missing someone or some thing", obviously influenced poetry and music. And yes males also sing it and there's very good male singers as well, Carlos do Carmo, Camane and many others.

Hello, l really liked your reaction to fado. There are some notes I would like to share with you: 1- fado is totally portugueses. Fado is the portuguese soul sung. 2- there are a few male fado singers to as Camané (sei de um rio or fado laranjeira) or Carlos do Carmo ( Lisboa menina e moça) 3- the fact that they sitted in the end of a fado was a coincidence, if you are more videos you Will motive that. 4- fado usually express a very portuguese felling of melancholic and longging for those who are in the sea and how many time we Will have to wait for them or if they Will Come back... Portugal was the first and longest overseas Empire since the 15 Century to the 21 Century and our history is deeply conencted to the sea. If you read the translation of the lirics you'll notice that we always Sing about sea, boats, not seing somente for longe time etc etc, but obviasly we do have happy fados. By the way fado means desteny, the desteny of those who are in the sea. We transformed out sadness in master pieces. 🎶🎶🎶💕💕💕

You only claro fado at the end. Yes, Mariza and Ana Moura, Carminho, Gizela João are all from Portugal. You should check them out. Fado is a very deep feeling and the word 'Saudade' is pretty unique , somehow it means when your soul is so deeply bloddy sad when you miss a dear one or a very strong feeling. However, you have funny fado too. A lot of it.
