You really see VP's fun side in Disney covers. :) Actually Geoff complains that Layne pushes him to do things he doesn't think he can do: go lower or whatever it is. In his words : "He hates me." Layne loves to do the character parts too. I haven't actually seen the film so wouldn't have known who the characters were. Both Geoff and Layne give us chords that bring tears to my eyes. Just beautiful. When this came out many were saying that this is clearly how Geoff gets all his voices - he steals them. :)
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
Based on this, yes, I would agree with that! :-P Haha - I love that Geoff complains and then just nails it! Layne is a great character actor - glad to see him doing this, and look forward to more. I will say the film is truly charming, should you wish to dive into it at some point (pun not intended). Could not agree more re the chords from VP arrangements - they understand how to use music so very well, and I think their emphasis on acting gives weight to that, whether the song is question is an acting one or not.
@huldradraco Жыл бұрын
They use Hannah Juliano when they need someone who understands the female voice better, or if they have a very heavy riffer as a guest, to work out the riff parts or to give it that female touch. Layne and Geoff sometimes feel they need Hannah to give them some ideas for the female lead parts, as they're used to writing for male voices. Or to come up with some nice riffs, as they're not too used to doing that themselves.

Yes you are correct that Geoff and Layne seem to like pushing each other when arranging. Much of Geoff's most astonishing vocals are on Layne arranged songs ('Oogie Boogie' and 'If I were a Rich man' for example) and much of Layne's most impressive beatboxing and singing tends to be on Geoff arranged songs (Enemy and Attention for example). They are both charmingly humble in that regard, preferring to push the focus more on others.

Highly pregnant at this time, which reminded me of Elizabeth Zharoff covering Poor Unfortunate Soul during her pregnancy. A wonderful performance and a must see, even if you don't react to it. She still holds Geoff as one of her favourite Ursulas,said so in the comments of her video. Elizabeth also said it takes a confident man to sea-gull. And JNone stealing Geoffs last line, lol. Yes! You nailed it-when Layne does the arrangement look for Geoff to be challenged, and vice versa. Also, when it’s Layne you can expect some more novel percussion-he likes to do things like take a classical old show tune and make it hip hop, or throw in some new vocal perc trick he’s picked up. You’re the first reactor I’ve seen who truly got caught up in the comedy here. Layne is a comic genius, IMO, and Eli has superb comic timing (you see it more in We Don’t Talk About Bruno, but here as well). And Lord I love that they decided Geoff should be Ursula! He has such fun with it! You’re also the first reactor I’ve seen who noticed that J.None stole Geoff’s bass line. That goes by pretty fast. He gets a little bassy with that “heave ho,” as well. IMO, “guys” became gender-neutral a long time ago. Even back when I was a kid out with my girls having fun, someone would say, “you guys, look at this!” Nobody corrected it or cared. (Now, if you REALLY want to talk about gender issues, consider the fact that there is no functional equivalent of rompers for men. Those things are HORRIBLE in terms of practicality, and men would never put up with it. Ditto high heels and shape wear-dear God, the layers alone make it so HOT! Women have been conditioned to put up with all sorts of misery to be “pretty.”) Layne’s cheek perc just before (I don’t know the name of the song just now)”the seaweed is always greener” also is tuned to sound just like those first notes of that song. If you’ve come to appreciate J.None, you might check his channel. There’s some good stuff there, including a really sweet rendition of our National Anthem. So many singers riff like crazy through the song to the point it’s barely recognizable. J, who can riff with the best of them, chose to sing it straight and it’s lovely. Geoff’s Poor Unfortunate Souls is almost a torch song. Love it to pieces. And by the way, just a side note, Geoff has since done some equally fantastic slides and he’s obviously worked on them because the shift between registers is SO smooth now. Eli’s lighting-excellent. There are so many subtle moments where the light helps make the moment. Thanks for doing this, even if it is an hour and a half! Dude!😅 Also Eli-the sweet tone here vs. that gritty rocker sound in Hoist the Colours and other songs. he really is a chameleon, both vocally and as an actor. That’s an ability you don’t see that often. I also really love his lower register. When Layne goes into these characters I often picture him telling stories to his daughters. I bet he’s fun at home, cuz he also probably practices these random perc noises as he goes along.

So glad you reacted to this one! It’s definitely a fan-favorite. To answer your question regarding Hannah: Layne/Geoff will work with Hannah especially if there is a female collaborator as well as just working with her because she is a talented artist. Fun fact about Eli’s Scuttle costume- they had another costume that had put on him first which consisted of a white Mardi Gras bird mask and wings that Layne had duct taped to his arms. They had to reshoot it because it was just too ridiculous, not like the one they reshot wasn’t ridiculous either. Eli is a talented voice actor and Geoff/Layne love to utilize his talent in these animated covers. Another one you should check out soon is Friends on the Other side with J-None. It’s one of my favorites.

Long comment incoming... (SORRY!) I. LOVE. THIS! Just so you know, I was flailing all the way through your initial reaction. And I know you know what that looks like; I'm pretty sure you've seen me happy flail once or twice. I love how on the line, "Lookout lads a Mermaid be waiting for you", the camera focuses on Geoff, who's portraying Ursula, whom I would consider a mer-person. Could be coincidence, but with this group, I have my doubts on that. I think it's likely planned. The comment you made about the disjointed feel of the chords during "Part of Your World", Ariel's pretty disjointed at this point in the film, and in her journey. She doesn't feel like she belongs in her world. Also, in PoYW, I love the 'climbing' of "I want more" in the chorus between J.None and Eli. It feels like they're climbing for the surface, that 'more' is up there. Geoff's slide after "Take it from me"!!! Like... it sounds like a bassist has plucked a string and just slid their finger up the neck from one note to the other. I think that might have been my goosebumps moment in this song, my "I could listen to this part all day" moment. And the second slide of his in that section. Geoff is excellent at falling off of his slides in such a way that we don't actually notice, unless we're listening for it. Why do you try to mimic the sounds? 'Cause you're a theatre kid. The "Woot!" sound? I think that's Layne. And I love it. I love that they turn "Under The Sea" almost into an ensemble-type number, with the harkening back to "Part Of Your World", and lyrics from earlier in "Under The Sea" itself. I love the emphasis on "We" in the "We haven't discussed the subject of payment." I think in the original film the (albeit slight) emphasis is on the word, "payment". Geoff-Ursula making it seem like a truly joint transaction, when really, it's pretty one-sided. Rachel's voice sort of doing it's own thing while the topic is her voice just emphasises it even further. It's brilliant. I also love the visual of Geoff "conducting" Rachel's voice from her. Just... chills! On "Kiss The Girl", I love that the close harmony comes when, visually, we see Ariel-Rachel nervous, and sort of curled within herself; it emphasises what she's feeling. Also, that lone, "kiss" from Rachel, like "I'm waiting... kiss me." Sorry for the novel-length comment. Another amazing reaction (one I knew you were going to love) as always! *Anxiously waits for more.* (Oh, a don't apologize for missing things! There's A LOT happening in this video. Visuals, musical things, theatrics. It's easy to miss things.)
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
Nothing to apologise for in a long comment! (Just takes me a little longer to reply as I keep up with the comments.) Interesting thought on focusing on Geoff as a mer-person - I wouldn't have caught that, but it's a cool idea. Great observations throguhout this. Definitely agree that Geoff is wonderful at using his voice in cool ways that might not be as evident to the ear on first (few) listen(s). Great point on the emphasis on "we" - I didn't see that, but totally agree. Also great catch on the Kiss the Girl moments. Love reading everything you spot - sometimes things I didn't think to comment on, and often ideas I completely didn't come up with or missed entirely. :-)

I had a different take on the way the others reacted to the 'chef's' song than you did. Interesting to see how someone else interpreted it. I had missed the beginning of Geoff's reaction (where you said he looked a bit smug), but had caught his look where Layne sings about 'pulling out the little fishes insides & serving them up fried'. To me I thought Geoff (Ursula) gave a 'and they call ME the villain?' look. As for Ariel on 'so Delish', to me she looks like she actually agrees with the chef. I saw that as part of her change to 'human' over mermaid. Of course, if it was actually real, all of them would be eating the little fishes anyway, just not cooked. So it is a bit hypocritical on their characters' parts. Great fun seeing your breakdown of the arrangement, visuals and vocals. Thanks!

I used to ride around our neighborhood on my little pink and white plastic tricycle belting Ariel's vocal line (the one she sings when Ursula takes her voice). I'm sure my neighbors adored me. 🤣 I did not realize Layne was Chef Louie at first, I was thinking perhaps Skuttle, though the bow tie didn't make sense for that, but you don't think of Chef Louie as being part of the group. Charismatic Voice also interviewed Layne about this video, and interviewed Geoff about one of his arrangements. P.S.: You asked if starting with the sea song and stamping was in response to the shanty trend on TikTok ... _maybe_ ?? The *very* start of it was when the folk / shanty group "The Longest Johns" would join the pirate-themed game _Sea of Thieves_ on Twitch, and randomly sing sea shanties at people over the chat. They did that with "Wellerman" in September of 2019. So it's not impossible. But most of the KZbin videos about the trend are from early 2021. I think this is just an example of Voiceplay making as complete a medley to tell the story as they can. There's an interview with The Longest Johns themselves about "The Wellerman" here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2ncZZuuiat8pbs It's from February 2021.
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
I can understand that!

That makes all the sense. I'd heard about The Longest Johns, and knew about the shanties in that game (though haven't heard them - I did listen to a video of the Assassin's Creed shanties), so I'm grateful for the interview link - I'll check that out.

Thanks for a fantastic reaction and analysis, David!

Honestly though, that's me stretching to respond to the comment - I don't know how to rank what I've heard so far (and I'm aware it's probably not even 7% of their portfolio. I'd be fascinated to know about the bracelets as well - I need to go back and watch TLM again and see if I can pick up the reference. Perhaps it ties him to the green of Vanessa's dress? That's weak, but it's all I've got in a stream-of-consciousness fashion!

I know I have said this many times, but Rachel has the perfect Disney Princess voice. Rachel did play Ariel at Disney World. I think Geoff worked at both Places. Got to Huldra Draco's channel. She has an amazing history of VoicePlay, and all of their past and current members.
@janetdw Жыл бұрын
Geoff did a number of things at Disney, and he and Kathy were both employed at Universal in the Beetlejuice rock ‘n’ roll graveyard review. He was Frankenstein for 10 years, and she was his bride for 12?! Also Tony played Dracula at some point in time and was very theatrical! That must’ve been where he learned to swirl the cape like he did in phantom. I have read that J also was Wolfman at some point but have never found any footage of it.

I definitely got something out of this video, man. I was entertained from the moment you started watching Voiceplay until the moment you stopped. This video has always been fun for me. But I never really noticed just how complex they get in the background and with some of the harmonies. I guess, for me, it was always a case of " Meh, it's the Little Mermaid", but I should've looked at it more as "It's Voiceplay". So, thank you for that. Wonderful video, as always, David. Keep up the good work, though I know how much work it is.

This was by far the longest reaction I've ever watched ... and well worth the time! Watching you totally lose it was worth it by itself, let alone all the cool stuff you pointed out and knowledge you shared. I understand this is a popular movie but I don't care for it (girl changes everything about herself to get a guy) and the story by Hans Christian Anderson is horrific, as so many fairy tales are in their original form. I've listened to Geoff's narration of it. He's great; the story is still horrifying. But I love this video. Geoff has commented about Layne pushing him that "Layne hates me." But they push each other. Geoff said "basses don't riff." Layne, arranging Tennessee Whiskey, said "start practicing." Geoff originally scored the solo in Nothing Else Matters for Layne's voice/effects, but a few days before they were scheduled to record, asked Layne to play the violin for it instead. At the end of Oogie Boogie, Geoff was going to go up but Layne wanted something bigger, deeper. Geoff didn't have a reliable E1 before that video, but he did afterward. I'm guessing (hoping) Moana Medley is on your list for Disney month. It is by far VP's most-watched video. As good as the vocals are (another collaboration with Rachel Potter) you can definitely see how far they've come in leveling up their videography skills, especially when it comes to lighting. It has a spoken outro over the credits. It's also an easy video to date, given the transition state of Geoff's hair from short to long, and that Kathy is not listed as production manager. Baby William was a newborn at the time.
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to stick with me! I absolutely hear you re both the movie and the original. I feel like there are a lot of stories like this from 30+ years ago that have not aged well if examined closely. All of this makes complete sense - I love that they are so good for each other's development as performers! Moana is not in Disney month, I'm afraid, but it will be coming soon-ish. I'm very much looking forward to it - love the music from that film.

I was sooo looking forward to your reaction to this amazing medley, and it was brilliant, thank you. Though I'll have to apologise to my brother for waking him as your laughter was infectious and had me laughing out loud! 😬 My favourite bit was Geoffs rock belt and huge slide down to the depths, mainly cos I'd never heard him do that before but everything about this was wonderful. Rachel is of course the perfect Disney princess, Layne and Eli as chef and seagull, hysterical and the ever present amazingly tight VoicePlay harmonies. You never know what to expect from these guys but you know it's always going to be interesting! Thanks David for another enjoyable video, looking forward to the next one! 🧜♀️😁👍

I've been waiting for you to react to this. I had a feeling you would love it. Watching you having so much fun and commenting on the video was such a joy. I was smiling the whole time with you. Thank you for that! Great analysis. I never picked up on some of the lighting changes in the video and how it adds to the mood of what is happening at the time. I felt it while listening, but now seeing it again and paying attention to the different subtle changes in lighting brings more meaning to what is happening. Even pointing out how the transitions of one song to the other with their voices by holding a note a little longer, or holding back just a little, adds so much to the whole piece. It makes me wonder how long it takes to arrange something like this and think of all the intricacies involved with blocking every single detail. All I know, I love how music brings people together and how it definitely touches the heart and soul. Again, thank you so much. This was so enjoyable. I was with you the whole length of the video.
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
Oh, it was so wonderful. I'm really glad you enjoyed my video so much. Lighting is something very potent, but if you're not looking for it and it's done well, you don't notice it. I've done enough lighting design and follow-spotting that I'm a bit more cued into it now. As to how long, I have no idea, but I feel like the answer is either "longer than you think," or they're just so good at it that they get through it quicker than you'd think.

I really don't care how long this video is -- I loved every bit of it, because you pointed out so many things I'd missed! Yes, I'd noticed Geoff's look of slight irritation toward the end of the video, but hadn't realized it was because J.None "stole" his line "sing it with me now." And all the details of the musicality of the song, all the different parts and harmonies, all the things going on in the background that I hadn't noticed because I focused on whoever was singing lead. Fantastic reaction! (Hate you for taking up 90 minutes of my time? Honey, that's why I'm HERE!)

Adored your response.... so funny! Layne has commented that he sometimes looks to a woman to arrange for women in his productions... assuming that they better know than he does how to handle the voice best. Pretty astonishing acknowledgement.... at least to me. But I'm old, and hearing a man say something like that seems really shocking. Love Layne. Love his wild, antic humor and his skills.

I'd watched for about 10 minutes or so when my cursor wandered and brought up the time slide-bar and I discovered how LONG this video was going to be. And then I didn't give it another thought because I was so entertained. I have around a dozen or so favorite reactors and you are really high on the list, because your "angle" on the video focuses not on the shape of their larynx or such like the vocal coaches, but rather on the way the video and audio affect the listener. You notice so many things that just fly below the radar for me. I enjoy the effects without actually noticing what's affecting me, and then you drag my attention to it and I realize with my conscious mind just WHY Layne/Geoff/Eli/etc. are so much fun to watch and hear. (I had to use "etc." because those are the only ones who are in every video I've ever seen. The other two (or three, as in "Wicked") change out depending on age of the video.) You really should have more subscribers. You get the occasional mention in the comments on other channels - but not enough. Gonna have to contribute to that more often. If I say "this is my favorite VP video," that statement will hold up for about two minutes and then be superseded. There are very very few VP videos that AREN'T my favorite. I was a Pentaholic before I was a ... (there's no cutesy nickname for us yet) VP fan, but it's really REALLY hard for me to rank them. VP and HomeFree did a dual effort video, which was funny but slightly off their game - I'd love for PTX and VP to team up on something. But it's hard to even think of something they COULD team up on. They rarely cover the same songs, even. Their totally different takes on "Cheerleader" come to mind... But whatever they came up with, I bet it would be awesome.

Thank you for giving my work a try and sticking with it! I'm glad you enjoyed. I think the length even of my shorter videos puts many folks off, but I'm happy to provide for those who want something a little more lengthy. I hear you on favourite videos. I think this one will be firmly top 3 material for a long time, but I'm always switching favourites. (I've heard VoicePlayas before, but don't know how official that is.) If you're referencing Survivor on the duel video, I did react to it - it was my intro to HF before I did Constant Sorrow. I agree, perhaps not the best of either, but a lot of fun nonetheless. Yeah, VP and PTX seem like they work in different worlds, but I'd be here for that too.

Another comment, because I'm like that... In the animated film, when Ariel first sings "Part of Your World" there is a painting in her cave that she interacts with when asking about fire. The painting here might be a nod to that. You asked if anyone else had picked up on Layne being dressed as Chef Louis, but I don't recall anyone picking up on that during a reaction. I know I didn't the first I watched this. But since I love Chef Louis' (serial killer) song, I was totally laughing... Layne did comment during a chat (I think?) that there were SO MANY BUBBLE SOUNDS... :D I think you are the ONLY reactor that I've seen who has caught (and/or mentioned) that Layne did the "chub play the flub". That little bit always makes me giggle. There is a LOT of discussion in the Discord over Geoff as Ursula. Most of us agree that we'd love to see this kind of a take over a longer instance (I know I certainly would.) Don't get me wrong, I love the more boisterous and bombastic version from the animated film. But that more persuasive seduction of the senses is so much more incredibly menacing. Even most children would get the feeling of menace from it without necessarily knowing exactly why it was creepy. (At least most of the children I've known over the years would.) When Rachel is singing as Vanessa, did you catch Geoff's wicked smirk about halfway through? I absolutely LOVE that bit, as it really (to me) emphasizes that he is also "Vanessa"...
@davidkreacts Жыл бұрын
Good to know re the painting - a few folks have indicated that it's the same one, so I think you're right there. I'm glad I'm not the only one who missed Louis! Yeah, his song is surprisingly sadistic and dark for a kids' movie, but then Disney just went there sometimes - if the tune is boppy enough, then I guess it was considered okay! I would absolutely love to hear Geoff dub Ursula completely - that would be incredible. I think I did catch the smirk and just didn't mention it, but watching it again I'm seeing it more clearly - that's a brilliant moment.

Thanks for the recommendations - I've heard Versailles before, but not for a long time, so I'd love to check them out properly, and YOHIO is new to me. I look forward to both of them - consider them on the list. (Btw, responding to your larger comment tomorrow - still catching up, but it's super late here right now! ;-) )

@@davidkreacts I knew I liked you for a reason! (Well, several reasons!) Versailles is one of my absolute MOST favorite bands in the entire world, to the point that I have made friends with an eBay seller in Japan so that a) I can have a friend in Japan, but also b) he can buy me the things that are ONLY available in Japan and send them to me. (Like Hizaki's photo calendar... which I shall keep forever and ever, every time I can get one!) YOHIO has several videos up on KZbin, and honestly, I enjoy all of them immensely. But Undo is a favorite for several reasons and I really want SOMEONE else to like him so that I can have JUST ONE OTHER PERSON to be able to bounce at. :) Okay, I want someone to bounce at about both Versailles and Yohio! I won't deny that!

Hanna Juliano does the singing in one of my favorite Pattycake Productions musical: The Villains Haunted Mansion kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIfPmn6bhM1-n9k. Another song written by Lane. I think you would enjoy doing a reaction to that. And I know I would enjoy watching your reaction to it. As usual I’m having fun watching you have fun watching these videos. Thanks!

if you'd like to see another incredibly funny VP song, try We don't talk about Bruno. it is also a brilliant version in its own right. maybe get acquainted with the original movie if you are not, for maximum enjoyment of the humour :)

I'm definitely going to get to that. I hadn't seen Encanto until about two months ago, but I'll be doing another Disney month at some point, and will probably put Bruno in then.
