we need better landlord laws and cheaper housing. Wonder why they don't just make more subsidized housing? I mean I am no expert, but wouldn't it be cheaper while also addressing the #1 expense disabled people have? (Rent is where most of our money goes if I am not mistaken.)

@@bigdog3628 They often do use social housing to stabilize the housing market and prevent excessive house pricing and rent gouging. It's still used more often in Quebec than it is here in Ontario. Overall it has more positive effect on the economy as well as people are left with more dollars in their pockets to buy goods and services, so it does benefit the economy, overall. In Ontario the home owners pay all the taxes so the Government provides them with all the benefit of inflated investments. BUT BUT BUT!!!!! Foreign investment is a big problem, because investors aren't "residents" of the country and as a result, are not subject to PROPERTY TAX. So RENTERS often pay both the rent and the property tax) through the rent. So if you RENT make sure the LANDLORD is RESIDENT of the country, if they just invest here the RENTER will be responsible for the TAX on the RENTAL. I bet there are many people renting from investors who don't know about this!!

As Doug Ford has said (In not so many words) says, the best way for someone to get off of disability is to get out of their scooter, stop faking it and go to the employment office and get a job. All governments are of the opinion that everyone on disability is scamming the system so they deserve the absolute minimum we can give them and make it almost impossible to qualify then set up hundreds of rules because we know they are cheating and this way we can catch them and get them off of the disability the system and back to work.

@ebrk7
@ebrk7 Ай бұрын
Indeed. We need to do something about that too. However, the amount that you get from OAS/GIS is higher than what a person with a disability aged 18 - 64 gets on provincial assistance or CPP so this $200 is being given to those who are on the lowest incomes in the country. Keep in mind that only about 600,000 people are going to get the $200 as you have to first have qualified for the Disability Tax Credit. I know someone who was on CPP for many years due to disability. When he turned 65, his monthly income, now from OAS/GIS, went up $600. The minimum amount a senior can get in my province is almost double what people with disabilities get on income assistance. Also, there is housing just for seniors so many seniors pay only 30% of their income on rent. There is very limited housing for people with disabilities, especially those in wheelchairs, and wheelchair accessible buildings are more expensive.

You do not need to be working for the DTC. I live in BC and even if you are on PWD (disability) here you are recommended to apply for it. You do not get the tax breaks, obviously, but it does still allow you to get into low income housing lists and start a RDSP. Lots of people who are not working still qualify for it. I do suggest that if you apply you get an advocate, though.

@@Nayukhuut NO you do not need to be working for the DTC but one of the requirements for the FDB is that you are working as well as receiving the DTC. It does not work at all like the GIS which it was supposed to be modelled after. As well the DTC is much much harder to qualify for.

@@PWingert1966 Whoa! This is the first I'm hearing that you have to be working. I knew it was just for those receiving the DTC but if this is also a requirement, that eliminates the majority of Canadians with disabilities. As a wheelchair user, I automatically qualify for the DTC but I'm way too sick to work, and would be even if I wasn't in a wheelchair, so I never applied for the DTC. It's of no use to me as I don't pay taxes on my provincial income assistance so don't need the tax credit. So if this is true, there's no point in my applying for the DTC just so I can get the $200 because I don't work. It will be interesting to see if the provinces and territories claw back this $200 for those on provincial or territorial income assistance.

I think this would be a more effective piece if it started with the situation of a specific person with a disability, like Mr. Stigas, if he’s willing to share. How much is the Ontario benefit? How much is needed in addition to the ON benefit (other provinces may pay more, or less.) Does ON pay for his wheelchair? What about customizations to it? How often does it need repair? What’s the average cost of repair? What other kinds of costs does he pay out-of-pocket? I certainly hope there is more money and coverage of costs for people with disabilities. That 41% of the 1M Canadians with disabilities live in poverty is shocking. What’s more, it’s an outrage. I’ll be speaking to my MP and my MLA.

Not everyone qualifies for ODSP, some only qualify for CPP Disability if you have acquired some assets like a house and/or vehicles prior to getting sick. If one owns more than one home, despite it being mortgaged to the hilt (rental income) prior to getting sick, you do not qualify for ODSP. You need to sell your properties as you can’t afford the taxes, insurance, maintenance, …. Bottom line, you need to sell all your assets, spend whatever you had accumulated before you’re eligible for a disability pension. The threshold for assets on ODSP, I believe is 40K. A person is driven into the streets before you can qualify. Another thing is the government usually deny all disability applications initially and people are forced to hire a lawyer to fight their case which usually takes well over 2 years before one starts getting disability benefits. The applicant is not receiving any monies to survive from the initial application till the end of the appeal process (2-3 years). Then they will give you retroactive payment from the day you qualified. After you pay the lawyer there is very little left for you. And you are responsible to pay the legal fees, as you have assets in your name, even if you can’t afford to pay. Like I said, people are thrown into the streets before getting a penny from a disability pension. Sad but true !!

Something is messed up here. I know of an american living in Canada on disability who has her wheelchair fixed the day she calls for free and has boxes of health products sent to her free each month courtesy disability so what he's saying doesnt jive and that is truly unfortunate because Canadians on disability do require more funding because in addition to simply trying to have shelter, food on the table plus heat and electricity, the way things are now this can only be attained by eating inexpensive unhealthy foods which makes one's health worse while striving to use little water, little electricity, keeping the house colder than it should be or having to live with others which in many cases places vulnerable people in potentially dangerous abusive situations. Those who manage to live alone are often found living like a hermit because there is no money for transportation and even if there was there's no extra money to spend on anything. I was born in this country to Dutch immigrants who never took any gov't handouts, who worked hard all their lives and contributed to this country and the people here. They started a Holland Canada Club for people to retain what they had from their country and add to it the Canadians way too. Not like in today's world where everyone wants to come to Canada, live here yet not be a part of the Canadian family that we are, an amazing group of people from around the world who have come together to live in peace, to enjoy this great land together in harmony. Yet now with all these special interest groups, our Canadian family is being split apart and all in the name of inclusion? Wtf? Historical experience shows that measures that overprotect tenants ultimately lead to the following results: landlords become more cautious and would rather have nothing than a bad one, so more people cannot rent a house. The rent increase started with the Tenant Protection Act, because the Tenant Protection Act did not treat landlords fairly. Landlords were worried that they would not be able to increase rents in the future, so they directly increased the rent by hundreds of dollars. Landlords were worried that tenants would not pay rent, so some tenants voluntarily paid a year's deposit. There are also some bad landlords who directly turned their houses into group rental houses, which are not restricted by the Tenant Protection Act. Tenants think that the Tenant Protection Act is helping them, but it is actually harming them.

Not sure why it took someone three years to realise that someone who turned 65 three years ago was still wrongly receiving benefits not given to someone once they turn 65. Not sure what programs are available in your province but in Nova Scotia, we have senior's pharmacare and there are programs to help pay for medical supplies. You should look into this. Even your pharmacist may know how you can get financial aid for the supplies.

Incontinent pull ups etc cost $600.00 per month. Thankfully I only take 3 prescriptions but they cost over $100. per month. Those alone add up to $1000.00 a month. My wheelchair & walker cost over $14,000.00 and need new tires & batteries that cost an aditional $1200.00 per year and only last 4 years if I'm very gentle and lucky. I'm just one senior. But by my math, if they remove just these benifits from all our seniors, they will surpas the $200.00 per person they claim to be needing on ODSP very quickly. It's all about quality of life and essentials for living. We can't live without our incontinent supplies and we can't move without our wheelchairs or walkers. The math does add up.

The $200 is not just going to people on ODSP. It's for people who have the Disability Tax Credit anywhere in the whole country. The Disability Support amount is federal, not provincial, so nothing to do with each other's budgets.

Lack of access is not the main reason wheelchair users don't work. Most wheelchair users are ambulatory but have a multitude of chronic and debilitating issues that prevent them from working. If your only problem is an inability to stand or walk, and you have no other health problems, there are many jobs you can do that anyone in an office, for example, can do. However, there is so much prejudice against people with disabilities, that many employers avoid hiring them. It's a very complicated issue that I can't possibly address properly in a comment in KZbin but that's the gist of it. I have seen people in wheelchairs working in stores, by the way, but only very few.

@@elena2125 I have! I take the bus, and there are lots of wheelchairs users and mobility scooters users that use our transit system.. if you run a business that is open to the public the owner must have wheelchair access.. rental units probably could use more policies to make rental homes to be mobile friendly.. I haven't seen much for that..

@@MeMyPCandI Lucky you that have seen that wonderful site. Once I saw someone try to use public transit on a wheelchair and it was such a disgrace, it was rush hour and other passengers went infront and got on the bus leaving the wheelchair person behind and the bus was full and drove off. The guy on the wheelchair was left on the bus platform upset and screaming. Another time I tried to help somebody on wheelchAir take public transit and the one of seatbelts to secure the wheelchair did not work, and bus driver did not how to use it and he left the wheelchair without securing it properly. As the bus drove the wheelchair moved and I had to use my whole body to try and make it secure. I had to hold on with one hand and use the other one to hold the wheelchair and use one of my feet as a break, I put my foot infront of one of the wheels luckily I was wearing thick shoes. None passengers care, one tried to help. So when we got off the bus we were so happy. And as for the subway you have to be careful with the gap between the platform and the subway cart. And if your pushing a wheelchair good luck. Let alone all the other passengers who are rushing and some have an attitude of importance witch it's so funny because everybody pays to use the system So for all those few lucky ones with some type mobility chair who can have access public transportation and successfully use it ... Well they are the lucky ones.

@@kathleenpage8148 Having serious health problems, being in a wheelchair, and having less than a few thousand, sometimes, less than a thousand to live on each month is not comparable to being healthy enough to work. Even at minimum wage, a full-time job is more than double what provincial assistance is. The average person can get on a bus for a few dollars. It costs me about $100 for a wheelchair accessible van service to get to a doctor's appointment.

Is it my fault that some people can't take care of themselves? I think not! I've worked all my life, and I'm tired of being poor and being taxed to death. Too many people get disability cheques and they can work, but don't. If you can't take care of yourself then ask your family to take care of you....not working people!
