I think realizing that a lot of his early stuff was for shock factor is an important understanding that a lot of people miss. He was a teenage boy in the height of offensive = funny comedy. I've been following him since '07 and it's great to see someone who discovered him more recently and can appreciate the older stuff for what it was. It didn't all age well, but damn was it clever.

"I just realized there was a sex joke hidden in everything I just said." 😆 Bo's rubbing off! Probably because "B.O. lingers and it makes you think." Usually, I'm not a fan of this type of humor, but his wordplay is just so genius that I can't help but love it!
@jawrool2 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, it was appreciated. So much so he got a spot on Comedy Central Presents off the stuff he posted to KZbin. However then, he was almost boxed in as a "music - comedy - artist." It wasn't until he performed Art is Dead in a room full of comedy legends that he got respect from the comedy OGs as it were. The kids tho, always been messing with the kid.
@TheDaringPastry13132 жыл бұрын
There is a song in the special "Inside" that is called "Problematic" that addresses how he feels about his earlier years. When you get to "Words Words Words", you should look at genius lyrics after to see all the wordplay that is missed. It's crazy how many double and triple meanings he puts in that song. Wait until you get to his performance pieces like Left Brain Right Brain or We Think We Know You. We Think We Know is a PURE performance piece. You'll see what I mean when you get to it. Taking the BAT out of BASEMENT ... SEMEN lol

Its so sad that hes ashamed of this work when this is literally WHY hes famous. Literally feeling shame for bringing joy and being a peerless creative. Depression alters your perception of reality. It makes you think everything you do is wrong even despite everyone telling you otherwise. Mental illness doesnt discriminate.

6:45 I am just 2 years older than Bo, and I remember watching him grow his entire career. I was an early enough fan that I remember when it was his brother who uploaded the videos to the channel. Bo's brother was deployed overseas at the height of the Iraq War and they would always talk and send each other funny videos. The videos that Bo sent his brother made him laugh so hard he started uploading them to KZbin. When he started going crazy viral and writing more music, his brother handed the channel over to him.

Bo is LITERALLY the perfect artist. Every single one of his bars has a double meaning. He wants you to laugh at the silly words at first, but THEN he wants you to go back and listen to what he is actually trying to say to you. This guy is.... Just, the fucking best. Show me another musician that can make me laugh AND think the same way he does. I doubt you can. And if you do it, I'll just call it a "copy cat" because this dude has had BARS since he was 16. No one has ever done this as well as he has done. Ever. That's a hill I am totally comfortable dying on.

The third world country (third whirled c*nt tree) joke is the most amazing wordplay i can't believe he was like 18 when he wrote this. But shoutout Bo for realizing it was edgy and trying to atone for saying some gross things through Problematic off Inside.

His early stuff shows how consistent he has been... great reaction! :) It is funny in the comments where people talk about how his early stuff is "edgy" For anyone who thinks things are problematic, or starts a sentence with "I feel..." Just know i hope you live a happy life, even though you clearly don't understand much at all. And if you would like clarification on that point, mystery people in the comments who i have seen this "type" of people comment on others.. i would gladly do so, since free speech is not only good, but absolutely necessary (to a functioning society, and an individual as a whole) (not groups, as collectivism is inherently flawed)

In order to think, one must risk being offensive/offended.- Dr Peterson, 100% agree on Freedom of Speech. The other day i came across a reaction to Forrest Gump. Now, i have no clue what compelled this comment made by the reactor.. but he went into a 10 min spiel “understanding why *Forrest Gump* could be construed as problematic.... FORREST GUMP??? I left a similar comment to yours saying “i wish i had so few problems in my life to figure out ways FORREST GUMP as being problematic”... blew my mind.

KZbin took him seriously since he played at KZbin live (2008?). He's said he uploaded videos for his brother at college and they just took off.

What’s crazy is this was all accidental. He was going to be just a one liner comic kind of like Demetri Martin while at NYU when he got out of high school . He made these funny videos to just send to his older brother not really knowing how KZbin worked and he became a viral sensation , by 19 he got his Comedy Central special which is still the youngest someone has had a stand up special on Comedy Central at .

yeah, uhh no. he was amongst the most popular videos on youtube in 2008, but i was a freshman in highschool at that time and kids like me were probably his main audience. but there also weren’t a lot of adults using youtube. he didn’t have “respect,” per se, cuz like you said his videos were shock humor. but also back then shock humor was a little more acceptable and not seen as low brow as much as it is today.
