Lahey and Randy performed at Rumor's comedy club in Winnipeg and bunch of us went to see them, and besides being an amazing set they had a sort of intermission which I understand they used to do where they ask the audience if anyone wanted to come up on stage and put on the Bubbles glasses and riff with Randy while Lahey had break. We nominated our one buddy to go up and they gave a shot at it and he absolutely knocked it outta the park for about what seemed like 10 minutes straight. Audience loved it. Got huge praise from Randy and Lahey, rest in peace. One of my fondest memories.

Mert - Hockey Night in Canada started as a radio program on the CBC back in the 1930s(?), and migrated to television in the 1950s. It's a television institution up here. It's still on every Saturday night on the CBC during the NHL season, normally with multiple games each week, for different markets and the different timezones (ie there will be at least one game in the east and one in the west of Canada).
@bluebear19852 ай бұрын
I think the 1930s sounds about accurate. They got a regular weekly broadcast started around the time Maple Leaf Gardens first opened. I think it was around 1952 that they made the transition to television.

If you've ever come across Canadian born singer Neil Young in your reactions, I remember when his father, sports columnist Scott Young, was a regular commentator on Hockey Night In Canada. He was fired in 1962 for writing unflattering things about the Toronto Maple Leaf's chairman, who also was a major shareholder of Maple Leaf Gardens (where the show was produced). The exclamation "He shoots !! He Scores !!!" was the trademark of play by play broadcaster Foster Hewitt, and later his son Bill from 1952 until 1981.

A true Canadian institution - Saturday nights in hockey season has meant Hockey Night in Canada for generations in Canada, radio in the 1930’s, then onto TV in the modern era. Two games, one in the East starting at 7pm Eastern time, one in the West three hours later at 7pm Pacific. Between period features, a panel of commentators in the studio away from the rinks, and followed by “After Hours” nowadays, a long format interview with a player or coach. Look up Jerry Toth Orchestra Hickey Night in Canada Theme (on KZbin) - every kid knew that theme until the network got in a dispute about royalties and dumped it in the early 2000’s. A classic. Any Canadian who loves hockey knows the tune. Still gives me shivers like when I was a kid and so excited for the games.
@111oooo2 ай бұрын
Real "Road Hockey" in Canada is played in running shoes on a not busy road behind one of the kid's houses. Hockey sticks, tennis ball (better a well used one so not overly bouncy). Nice to have a couple of nets but not required (four stones can work). Then of course the familiar call "CAR" requiring the interruption of the then resumption when the car passes. Great to have a couple of guys with a goalie stick but not required

Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) is a long-standing and cherished Canadian television program that broadcasts live hockey games, primarily focusing on the National Hockey League (NHL). It’s similar to how people in Scotland might gather to watch a big football match, but instead of football, it’s ice hockey, the most popular sport in Canada. The show first aired in 1952, making it one of the oldest sports television programs in the world. It's a cultural institution in Canada, and for many, watching Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday evenings is a beloved tradition, almost like a weekly ritual. The format typically includes pre-game analysis, live coverage of at least one NHL game (often featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or another Canadian team), and post-game discussions. The show’s iconic theme music is instantly recognizable to Canadians and is often associated with the excitement of the game. One of the most famous segments on HNIC was "Coach's Corner," which featured Don Cherry, a colorful and controversial hockey commentator known for his outspoken opinions and flamboyant suits. Though Cherry is no longer part of the program, his legacy remains a significant part of the show's history. For Canadians, HNIC is more than just a sports broadcast; it’s a way of connecting with the national identity and celebrating the sport that is so deeply ingrained in the country's culture.

With regards to Hockey Night in Canada, imagine if the English Premier League was actually nearly 100 years old. Back in the days before television, when there was only radio, the BBC broadcasted one game a week on a Saturday afternoon. Eventually, once there were televisions the program moved from radio to TV but still maintained everything that it was. That is the historical context of Hockey Night in Canada but it meant even more in Canada because there was only a team in Toronto and a team in Montreal originally so given the size of the country, Hockey Night in Canada was the only access most people had to the NHL game. With Canadian winters being what they are, Saturday nights with Hockey Night in Canada has been a staple for most Canadian families going back many decades.
@adrianmcgrath19842 ай бұрын
Hockey Night in Canada was essentially a production team and crew. Much like Match of the Day in the UK. Hockey teams play a number of games a week - average of 3 (?) and travel means they could be playing anywhere. Midweek hockey could be awkward for televising, especially as you have 6 time zones and two countries. Usually a local station would carry the midweek games - or TSN. Hockey Night in Canada was a show that started at a set time and although broadcast "nationally" might show two games an eastern and a western one - with the time difference, a Habs home game can be wrapped up before a Canucks home game begins. At other times they might cause furore by sticking with a Maple Leafs game nationally, even when a Flames or Oilers game has started and Westerners get upset. Or it may cut away early and western Leafs or Habs supporters living in the West get upset. Basically, its Match of the Day, except in two countries and several time zones, further plagued by the fact that Canadians tend to be pretty mobile, so lots of fans are displaced - and then on top of that there is the historical fact that in the early league, the Leafs and Habs were the two Canadian teams, so many people support them because their family always has, even if they themselves were born and raised somewhere else. A side effect of this scattered scheduling means that most hockey fans have a whole internal framework of who they do or don't support. If your team isn't playing, it's easier to watch a game that you have another team to root for. - this framework can be dismantled during the playoffs because if your team goes out, you will need another - except criteria change as you will want the cup to stay in your own country - and in some cases your own province . Calgary and Edmonton and even Vancouver fans might well support each others teams, if it means the cup goes to Alberta - or at least in the West

Bubbles, a beloved character from the Canadian television show Trailer Park Boys, is known for his thick glasses, love for cats, and quirky yet endearing personality. Played by actor Mike Smith, Bubbles quickly became a fan favorite due to his unique blend of innocence and street smarts, often providing comic relief with his misadventures in the Sunnyvale Trailer Park. Mike Smith, who initially joined the show as a sound engineer, was convinced by the show's creators to play Bubbles, a character he had developed as a joke during jam sessions with his band. The oversized glasses Bubbles wears, which give him his distinctive look, were actually found at a flea market. Smith has mentioned in interviews that while the glasses contribute to Bubbles' iconic appearance, they are extremely uncomfortable to wear. The thick lenses significantly impair his vision, making it challenging for him to see clearly while filming. Despite this discomfort, Smith embraced the role, knowing that the glasses were crucial to bringing Bubbles to life. Smith's portrayal of Bubbles has earned him widespread acclaim, and he has spoken fondly of the character in various interviews, often discussing how the glasses, despite being a literal pain, are essential to capturing Bubbles' unique charm and perspective.

How Crosby compares to McDavid: Crosby was basically known as the best player since Wayne Gretzky (2857pts) retired, he may go on to be about #5-6 (1750-1850pts) in scoring all time, maybe lower or higher depending on how many more seasons he plays, but his career is just winding down. McDavid is just getting into his prime, and is on pace to surpass Crosby shortly after he retires. I don't think he'll pass Gretzky unless he keeps this pace up until he's 40, but #2 in points all time (1922+pts) is not out of the question the way his trajectory is going. The real questions are if he can hit 2000 points, or how much beyond 2000 will he get to.
