Pentatonix did this on $400 budget, all done in Avi's and Kevin's shared apartment, they videoed themselves separately in a closet and kitchen with an iPhone. Yes, they won their first Grammy for this arraignment also being the first a Cappella group ever to win a Grammy Award. Pretty impressive, eh?
@charlottevan_89 ай бұрын
The idea that they filmed themselves with an iPhone is a legend. It didn't happen that way. Here's an article about how it really happened, with Jimmy Bates of FifGenFilms (who also did the video shoots and edits for "Can'y Hold Us", "Love Again", "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", "Radioactive", and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", among others. strobist.blogspot.com/2013/11/pentatonix-daft-punk-video-low-budget.html

They recorded the audio in a closet (which is basically a sound booth when full of clothing) and the video was filmed in the kitchen. It was a bit more than $400 though. 😅👍

So much fun to watch your brain explode over this one. 😂 You mentioned the transitions..try one of their “Evolution of..” medleys. They take an artists greatest hits and knock out like 10-15 of them in 5-7 minutes. They’ve done Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Rhianna and more-they’re all amazing.

Your reaction was so much fun! Definitely worth the Grammy they got for this, right? It was their first of 3 (so far). They still do this in concert a lot. I saw them do it this Summer and it kicks ass live. Everybody was up dancing. Loved this! A fun additional reaction is the "Daft Punk Private Performance" video. They are literally just standing there in a row in a crappy backstage room with no mics or sound balancing or anything, being filmed on someone's phone from 11 years ago. They boggled the mind in 2011, now they can just blow our faces off at will, like their recent Kiss From a Rose video or their new arrangement of O Holy Night.

This is one of those songs that the longer it plays, the more amazing it gets, not really a surprise it got them their first Grammy.

You know about the origin of Pentatonix, right? About how they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ in 2011 with a first prize of $200,000 and a recording contract? Well, that recording contract was with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, who sponsored _The Sing-Off._ So immediately after winning the contract all the members of Pentatonix moved to California in preparation for recording their music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella music. But at this point Pentatonix was totally invested in staying together and making a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. They weren't about to give up just because some short-sighted recording executives said there was no future in their music. So they came up with Plan B. They pooled their winnings, using the $200,000 as seed money. They lived frugally. The men shared two apartments, to cut down on rent. They arranged music and rehearsed every day. And whenever they had a song ready they'd record it on their iPhones and post it to KZbin. It didn't take long for their fans from _"The Sing-Off"_ to find their channel and subscribe, and even then pentaholics were enthusiastic, so they spread the word around. And some of them became patrons. And Pentatonix started going viral. And someone at Sony sat up and took notice. "Hey, Pentatonix! Here at Sony we've concluded that Epic made a big mistake when they cancelled your contract. But we have another subsidiary, named Madison Gate. Would you be interested in a contract with them?" Hmm 🤔, we might have to think about that, for two seconds or so. Darn right we're interested! It wasn't a terribly good contract; Madison Gate specialized in movie soundtracks, so they couldn't provide Pentatonix with a recording studio, for instance. But they could and did get a company named FifGen Films to record videos for Pentatonix, and they published albums, and albums bring in money. It was a start. "Daft Punk Medley" was released on PTX Volume II, their second album, in 2013. And in 2015 it won them their first Grammy. And someone at Sony said, "Wait a minute! We got a Grammy from MADISON GATE?! Madison Gate publishes film soundtracks, not Grammy winners! What's going on here?" Eventually they figured it out, and they got in touch with Pentatonix again. "Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.

Pentatonix won their first Grammy in 2015 for this song, which had been released on their second album, "PTX Volume II" in late 2013. The category was "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella," a category which did not previously exist; it was changed from "Best Instrumental Arrangement" specifically because the Academy wanted to nominate Pentatonix for this arrangement and they didn't have an appropriate category. They won their second Grammy in 2016 in the same category, for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy": kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKWWoHSvgMR8fZosi=HScVZ5M8HxHSFdrQ They had released it on their third album, "That's Christmas To Me," in late 2014. Ben Bram, who is listed as an arranger on virtually all Pentatonix songs, was a co-winner for both of these Grammys. Their third Grammy came in 2017 for their collaboration with Dolly Parton (co-winner) on Dolly's song "Jolene": kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYqmoKyLrb5lfrssi=7iUtcxouUN4YbeLU "Jolene" was released in 2016 on their album "PTX Volume IV: Classics." The nomination category was "Best Country Duo/Group Performance." Astonishingly, this was the first time Dolly Parton won a Grammy for "Jolene." IMO, Pentatonix should have won a Grammy for their rendition of "The Prayer," released on their 2021 Christmas album, "Evergreen," but someone at RCA (their publisher) didn't submit it to the Academy in time so it was never even considered. ( You can see the official video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ_Zq6p3hdahn7csi=55vvqCMY2l9e9mtq ) However, the entire album WAS nominated in the category "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album" and lost to "Higher," by Michael Bublé. Their 2022 Christmas album, "Holidays Around the World," is currently nominated in the category "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album"; we'll find out on February 4 whether they win.

I agree, you need to check out the private performance of this to grasp the sheer magic of what they do. No mics, backing tracks or engineering so not as polished, but every bit as impressive, if not more. The fact that they can sing several different songs at the same time while standing next to each other is mind blowing

They are the best, have always been the best and are just getting “bester” imo. I also agree that you must listen to the live version that was done in a dressing room as part of someone’s Make a Wish wish (I believe). Someone left the link below. IT’S WORTH A SECOND REACTION 😁 Also, their Evolution vids are brilliant.

Here's another one you can bop to. It's Avi's original solo song "When I'm a Fool", this version from the Sunset Sound Session he set up last year with his album's producer, Grammy winner Shooter Jennings, backed by some of the best studio musicians in LA. They get into jam groove in this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnaVZYiKfZijo7M

Your reaction was the same feeling I had when I first saw this video about a year ago...I felt like I had been living under a rock or something that I had never seen it before lol. I heard recently that when on tour, there were a couple times that Avi hit notes so low that the sound system couldn't handle it and broke down! I'm hoping they go on tour this year again and come to my part of the world....I would LOVE to see them in concert!

❤😂 I loved your reaction. Bopping to an a cappella medley of Daft Punk songs probably seemed unlikely to you before you started your PTX journey. And now here you are. They perform this live and the record skip and voice EDM on the “work it” section are there live as well. At the Hollywood Bowl 2022 they perform many songs, including Daft Punk, Hallelujah, and Bohemian Rhapsody. They are on KZbin. ( many people want to hear them do something live before they commit to the idea that yes, they Are this good) I think you would like their original EDM song Love Again. I also love Sing, Happy Now, Run to You, Coffee in Bed, The Lucky Ones, Thank You, Be My Eyes, Can’t Sleep Love, Water PopSpring 2016 has 3 original songs and the Evolution of Michael Jackson, all live at the MTV stage. The sound is good. For covers: New RulesxAre You That Somebody?, Mad World, Say Something, Can’t Hold Us, Problem and all their evolution/ medley videos. Well over 200 songs, even more if count all the Christmas songs that have no video.
