the slang "function" has 3 contexts in Brazil: the first and easiest to understand is that a "role" guy is a hoodlum, a hustler, an OG. the second (which is not mentioned in this song, but it is common to hear in other raps here) is "to do a function" which can be: dealing, stealing, doing something to earn money, that is, hustlin'. the third I can't explain very well, but apparently, in the late 70's until the mid 80's, there was a time that people in São Paulo called "function". "At the time of the Function", is mentioned by Mano Brown in other songs. I believe it was a generation of people who frequented the same place, probably this time is the beginning of hip hop in Brazil, because other rappers from other neighborhoods who probably didn't even know mano brown at that time also cite this term "function period " "Root" on 1st verse is like a OG thing too. A old School Guy living the old ways like 80s n 90s. On second verse is a ancestor thing. is like..."Roots" by Alex Haley. Brazil have muslim comunitties but nothing like 5%. Maybe all muslims here are arabians. i read about the 5% some years ago. I see people like Rza, ODB, Rakim, Nas, Spike Lee using tshirts and collars with that logo and I was curious about it, I wanted to know what it was. "Root" in this context means something along the likes of og, old school, like, respecting the vision of a better hood, better favela, not striving self-growth only. In other contexts it can mean any job (whether legal or illegal, you know?), a run, or even a party, as you said. "Roots" means old school, commitment to information through culture. RAP as a social service. There's a very strong strand of that in the US too. I believe it has the same meaning. You can bridge the cultural difference between our countries and understand most of the lyrics. Congratulations!

No, it's not. He is painting a picture of a poor kid in the slum, growing up and having to face the world and all its difficulties. But he was not a victim. Raiz (root) here in Brazil has several meanings: Original - One that comes from the origin and/or keeps the origins alive in them. Original culture - That which is from the original culture and/or keeps the original culture alive. One who remains faithful to his place of birth - Even if he wins in life or moves away, he will always remember and respect the place where he came from and his cultural origins. So when he says "I am root brother", he is saying that he keeps/is/remembers/respects what is original and the place where he was born. There's other means, but those are the most used ones or main ones.

Dexter and Afro X formed the 509-E, a rap group that was created in Carandiru penitentiary, and 509-E was the number of their lockup that they shared. Carandiru was the biggest penitentiary of Latin America and was marked by one of the worst massacre of brazilian history when in 1992 a police intervention left 111 prisoners dead. Carandiru was demolished in 2002.
