In Australia, we don’t need ID to vote because we are on the Electoral Roll and we give our name to the clerk at the desk (there are several clerks with a copy of the Roll to expedite the voting), the clerk finds the page with our full name and they mark it off, then hand us our ballot papers which we take to one of the cardboard booths and fill it out correctly, then fold it up and drop it in the appropriate box on our way out. I usually say thank you to the staff because they’re part of my local community even if I don’t know them personally.

The Christmas holidays are six weeks long, not one month. Then in March, June and September you get two weeks off. I think it is a better system, and kids get a mental break that is long enough. Flies vary, but that's why cork hats were invented. In Malaysia there would be lots of insects outside of the cities, too.

It’s compulsory to attend voting (or do a postal vote, if eligible) to mark off your name on the electoral roll. You receive ballot papers at the polling station and must put them in the ballot boxes - upper and lower house. But since you vote in a private booth, you can leave the ballot paper blank, deface it, or mess it up by voting informal, such as ticks and crosses instead of consecutive numbers. Everyone has the responsibility. Everyone is to blame for the result. On turning 18 years of age, each citizen is automatically enrolled in the local, state and federal electorates or wards for every election. The Australian Electoral Commission runs elections and controls the electoral rolls. When you move, change your name, move interstate, etc, you are required to update your information so that the electoral rolls can be amended. When an election is announced, the media will remind voters to check that they are correctly registered for their current address. If they will be away from their voting location on election day, they need to make arrangements to either vote absentee in the approved polling place where they will be on the day, or request a postal vote, or attend an early voting location before election day. Election day is always a Saturday and is chosen so that it does not fall on a major Sports Event or long weekend. There are differences in term lengths for federal, state and local officials. In some states the period may be mandatory, whereas in other jurisdictions, the leader of government may call a snap election, when it is likely to benefit their party more than the opposition. This may cut short the term of all current members of Parliament or of the Senate. Some state governments are a single chamber, the Legislative Assembly, or equivalent. Most are bicameral.

Light dense cities or towns in remote rural Aus are predominantly for mining operations. Almost directly east of Perth, that dot is Kalgoorlie/Boulder, would not exist if not for the 'Superpit' gold mine, the towns themselves sit on a massive payload of gold yet to be mined, they would need to demolish Kalgoorlie and Boulder to open cut for it, as of today they mostly just tunnel for it.

Shes pretty accurate about things here, unlike many foreigners living in Australia. re the voting, we are sent a personal barcode to present at the voting site, or we can give our name and addrss, which is then crossed off the roll....meaning we cant vote twice. Compulsory voting? Well, its compulsory to turn up, register to vote, and take possession of your voting papers...if you really dont want yo vote, you can always choose to leave them blank or fill them out incorrectly, in which case, your vote doesnt count....but you wont be fined, because you've satisfied the criteria of turning up and registering

Re UV in Australia v USA. All of USA, except Hawaii is north of the Tropic of Cancer. Even Florida. Only Hawaii is south of the Tropic of Cancer, closer to the Equator. In Australia, about 40% of the mainland is north of the Tropic of Capricorn, closer to the Equator. So, much of the other 60% of Australian mainland is in the same latitude band as the southern US states, the US Sunbelt, like California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. And that’s the cooler, temperate part of Australia. Melbourne is about the equivalent latitude to San Francisco but has winds directly from Antarctica, whereas San Francisco has winds from the North Pacific Ocean. Sydney is about the same latitude as San Diego.

While most Aussies live on the coast, people do live further inland. Those lighted areas are inner towns. (Alice Springs is one of central set of lights and off to the right and down would be South Australia's River-land, Mildura and Broken Hill. Public Holidays: AFL Grand Final isn't a country wide holiday, nor it the Melbin Cup. Voting: Any country that doesn't have compulsory voting are fools. No ID is needed, but you do have to get your name crossed off the role. I have never had to wait more than 20 mins to vote and most polling booths everywhere. If you ask for Bundaberg Lemonade, you will get Lemonade. Best bloody Lemonade on the planet, same goes for their Ginger Beer. UV: When I was a kid (1960's) a company released a sun screen for people who have fair skin. Both my mother and I lathered up and went to the beach with the rest of the family. Both my mother and I were cooked. I could hardly move for 2 weeks, I lost so much skin that most of my freckles on my shoulders disappeared never to be seen again. I need to wear long sleeves and pants during summer. Sun screen only works on my hands and face.

The weird thing in USA is they wash the eggs with detergent due to government health requirements. That is the reason why they're stored in the fridge as this process removes a protective layer. Most other countries around the world have figured out that washing the eggs is actually harmful to the egg. So they would not require refrigeration in Australia.
@AnneMorley-up1qv3 күн бұрын
I read that in the US the customers like their eggs to be pure white so that is why the eggs are bleached before being sold. As you say, this bleaching process destroys the protective bloom on the outside of the shell. I believe this bleaching process is not permitted in Australia (thank goodness).

Americans apparently do some major washing of raw eggs that removes some natural sealant. So eggs need to be refrigerated. Most countries apparently just give eggs a superficial wipe, if that, so the natural sealant remains. In Australia, most eggs are stored in the open chilled section since our temperatures are generally higher in summer and store air conditioning is affected by opening and closing doors to external heat. If they are stored on shelves during winter, they are usually moved to the chiller in summer. It makes sense to just store them in the chilled section year round.

The dots of light in the middle of Australia are not really centres of high populations density. Some will be towns like Alice Springs and Broken Hill and I suspect some will be mines. Yes, in Australia, HECS repayments also only kick in at a certain level of income. I believe that level has been increased recently to allow some relief due to cost of living issues. No, you don't have to show ID when you vote in Australia. You just give them your name and address and they will record that on the electoral roll. Another important difference between the countries regarding voting is that we value our right the the "democracy sausage" (a sausage in bread sold at polling booths to raise funds for kids' sporting groups etc). Yes, it is all computerised and it is all run by a central authority, the Australian Electoral Commission, so that everything is done in a uniform way and we don't have those crazy variations between states like in US federal elections. Other differences is that th Prime Minister is chosen by his/her party and nit by popular vote like the president, so no electoral colleges or anything like that, preferential voting (in the house of representatives, we number every candidate running on one's seat so that even if your preferred candidate gets knocked out early, you still get to decide whether you prefer candidate A to candidate B when it gets down to the last two) and I would say a different interest in/approach to politics. I don't think Aussies are a vehement about their politics as in America and opinion isn't as strongly divided. The major parties are pretty centralist, with some leaning a bit to the right and some a bit to the left. The Liberal Party (a right party, despite the name) would never propose bringing back the right to own semiautomatic weapons (in fact, it was a Liberal PM, John Howard, who introduced gun control laws in Australia) or ban abortions, for example. That would be political suicide. Australians are more likely to be swinging voters, I think, voting Liberal in one election, Labor in another and Green in another. I have done so over my lifetime. I get the impression that Americans are more likely to be staunch supporters of their political party and would never contemplate voting for a different party in their lifetime. That would only apply to which footy team you barrack for here. When she said "Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat" I heard it in the voice of the character (Sid the seagull, if I remember correctly, who used to sing it on an animated ad maybe 20 years ago - OMG, just looked it up and it was 1981; I am sooo old). I think you are right that there are plenty of similarities between Australia and Britain. We have similar senses of humour and terminology. Obviously, the climate and countryside are pretty different, though.

Regarding the voting, I heard someone explain one of the positives of mandatory voting: It forces the political parties to not be too extreme, as most people in general are moderate, and wont want to vote for a party that is extreme left or right.

The American concept of free choice leads to multiple structures across 50 individual states. Australia and the UK apparently work on a more national basis, trying to create the same structure across the country. In Australia, this is only fairly recent, last 40+ years or so. Before that, when citizens didn’t move around a lot, especially moving interstate, each state set up its own rules to cover the vast area of a state. However, with more people flying around from state to state, there has been a push for more uniform rules, more conformity and consistency. The downside is some loss of choice but it makes it easier to move around and access services in a seamless way.

US citizens do not vote directly for their President their vote goes to people who then vote for the President, how idiotic is that. In Europe, sparkling water is much more common than it is in the U.S. First invented in 1787, it was likely added to lemonade after a surge in popularity in the 19th century. Refrigeration is not the silver bullet that eliminates the risk of Salmonella in Australia because Salmonella risk reduction is multifactorial and complex and includes safe food handling techniques in the kitchen while preparing meals. Eggs are a fresh food product. 21 days not refrigerated 45 days refrigerated.

The biggest advantage of compulsory voting is that it kills voter suppression,a big problem in the US. There’s no point making voting difficult because everyone has to do it anyway.
