Two excellent Aussie movies from the mid-1970s are Sunday Too Far Away and Caddie. Both nostalgic gems featuring Jack Thompson, easy to watch more than once. A lesser known one I enjoy is My Year Without Sex (2009). And on the darker side two scary ones set in the outback, the quietly menacing Wake in Fright (1971) and outright terrifying Wolf Creek (2005). Finally, going way back, The Sundowners (1960). Not really an Australian movie, but shot here featuring American, British and Australian actors and a fine outback storyline. Most unusual casting of Mitchum and Kerr, who struggle (and fail) with the Australian accent but act warmly and convincingly.

Very loosely based on true history was Underbelly. If one had ever encountered any of the real characters, then saw them portrayed on screen, it was fucking hilarious. Druggo scrubbers played by beautiful actresses walking in slow motion with their hair waving in the breeze. Absolutely stupid crooks glamourised; sorry but I can't watch it. I would recommend, since we're now onto series, "Blue Murder" ABC TV about D/Sgt Roger Rogerson (aka The Dodger) which is brilliant. "Killing Time" based on the Walsh St murders in Melbourne, "Janus" and *Pheonix" (the last 2 of which may actually be too realistic for the average viewer).

Let's not forget the endless Mini-Series that were just as brilliant as a movie, but cannot be included. I realise there aren't any recent movies included, this is due to moving to a rural area and not many good movies are worth shelling out for anymore, no matter where they are from - in my opinion. I could have added many more, yet those of younger generations wouldn't know of these or those that came before them. I didn't add those that I hadn't seen or weren't familiar with. I even left off those smaller movies that would be known in Melbourne, yet not in Sydney. Therefore, the amount of movies that we have made is beyond the imagining of most. Unfortunately, it was Australia that killed off our own Movie Industry. We offered up tax credits to the world and they came running. Americans would give up the right to state that the movie they had dreamed of would now be called Australian Made. Even the one I left for last, Elvis, is an Australian movie which must have him turning in his grave. Now, Australia is known for making movies for everyone else but for ourselves. We still have the talent. Just look under the free YT Movie William's Kelly's War and take in those comments. The 70s, 80s and partially into the 90s were our time to shine, now we simply make movies for everyone but ourselves. The movies from the above list in the video are mostly an embarrassment compared to our true achievements. I came across a quote by the late critic Roger Ebert when checking whether a movie was actually Australian. "Is everyone in Australia a few degrees off from true north? You can search in vain through the national cimema for characters who are ordinary or even boring; everyone is more colourful than life. If England is a nation of eccentrics, Australia leaves it at the starting line". Roger Ebert describing the eccentric national character in his review for the film Chopper (2000). Personally, I think that it's a most wonderful compliment, as it is the eccentrics who are the greatest of actors and artists. My guess would be that it was a young kid who put that disastrous list together in that video. One only needs to look at the dates of the movies. Make recommendations by all means, but never state that a list like this is somehow mutually agreed upon by all Aussies! We are true blue Aussies, but with minds and taste of our own.🇦🇺💖👩🏼🎨

@@travcat66 Yes, they're both there. Thanks for that info about the homestead. We have so many great places to be proud of and not just because of our scenery, but for what we have done and created, the memories. The hut from the Man From Snowy River became iconic. It just fit right in perfectly. Never got a chance to see it before it burnt down, but I hope they continue to rebuild it after being affected by each bushfire, as it's part of our heritage now. I was lucky enough to get the autographs of Kirk Douglas, Jack Thompson, Terence Donovan, Tony Bonner and the 'Man' himself - Tom Burlinson. I was still in school, but we knew a cameraman who got them for me. No-one had heard of Tom Burlinson before this and it says at the start - 'introducing Tom Burlinson'. When he signed his name, he addressed it to myself and underneath wrote under his name: 'The Man'. He hardly looked older than myself. I miss those days when we created some great movies and mini-series. We sure did them well. I don't even bother with free-to-air telly and refuse to pay for streaming services. Everything is so different, but that's progress I guess.💖

@@thisgirl5539 I appreciate that vote of encouragement, but there will be many that aren't included, especially the more recent ones. As much as I love watching movies, not even I can remember the majority of what we've accomplished. I still enjoy going back over iconic movies we've made, as we should be proud of them. Mad Max is Numero Uno with true Aussie diehards, last of the V8's Mate. My only problem with Max is he should of been driving the HQ. No bloody Australian should be seen dead driving a Ford in a movie. Mate if you are serious about really knowing an Australian, watch The Castle. It explains us perfectly. Bloody close to our best ever flick. Rusty isn't too shaby in Romper Stomper as well. If you want to check out New Zealand you could start with Once We Were Warriors. Powerfull movie.

Out of these TOP ten I have only watched one, "Pricilla Queen of the Desert". I have heard of a couple of others and have watched Mas Max 1. As in the comment below "The Dish" and "The Castle" are both great Aussie movies. Also "Australia" with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, shows life in early outback Australia very well, plus the Bombing of Darwin during WW2. Not to forget "Crocodile Dundee", "Storm Boy", and "Rabit Proof Fence", all fantastic films.

Most of the Mad Max movies were filmed in Australia. The exception was Fury Road which was filmed in Namibia because unexpected rain had made the Australian desert too green. Much of the filming of both the Mad Max movies and Priscilla Queen of the Desert was done around and in the town of Broken Hill in far West NSW. The town took the movie to heart and every year put on the ‘Broken Heel’ festival which was a scream.

Thankyou for showing this. I'm an Australian, living in the Australian outback and in my 50's. I haven't seen most of these films, I have several SVOD's such as Paramount, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc, to the point where I'm swamped with options and alas the forest does get lost in the trees. I've seen movies from the era of 'going to the cinemas' being a special treat for the family, such as with 'PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT' or 'THE WATER BOY', much of which was filmed near my home in Quorn, Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Much of 'WOLF CREEK' was also filmed near the family sheep station at Parachilna, also in the Flinders Ranges of the South Australian outback. I digress from my points though which were to say thankyou for showing me several movies worth looking for and stating that sometimes too many options can be a bad thing as it's easy to miss the pebble in the rocks.
