I think just about every state in te US has a rodeo in one form or another, but the bulk of rodeos take place in the states west of the Mississippi, where there is still need of a person on horseback. I grew up in southern California and right up the street was our neighbors who watched over their cattle. I don't know how many cattle or how many acres they owned, but it was a pretty good size chunk of land. Gradually, they sold off plots of land and moved their operations north of Santa Barbara, but they still herded their cattle on horseback.

I'm from the southeast US. We don't raise sheep, so at our county fairs the kids ride pigs. Listening to young people, I get so discouraged. "oooh...that's dangerous" Guess what? Life is dangerous. I hate that young parents are "bubble wrapping" their kids. Scared parents raise weak kids.

Was raised in NYC, but this reminds me of my childhood in many ways. Was a competitive gymnast Cant tell you how many serious injuries my parents told me to shake off 😂 Sounds crazy, but, a lot of American parents instill their kids w a highly competitive mindset & invest a lot in their extra curricular activities. It’s a blessing, in hindsight, to learn at an early age that you can push through almost anything if you set your mind to it & that pain doesn’t mean you should stop.

Rodeos are normally annual events. Usually in the summer, which not surprisingly is after cattle are moved onto the summer ranges. The ladies were laughing because, "Not my first rodeo" means "I'm not a noob". That wasn't a cowboy hat, more of a gardening one-which would've made her REALLY stand out.

America in the south and west still lives by older Traditional American wild west social norms. They raise their kids from a young age to take on some actual risks albeit risks tailored to their size and age. People are less overprotective of kids in the western and southern US than those who live urban lives on the east coast. Modern society on the east coast and overseas may be shocked about these little kids riding those animals but local resident folk attending the Rodeo in their western or southern state certainly aren't shocked seeing it because they believe in living lives of risk and growth through hard work struggle against the natural world and have seen and done such things themselves. They raise their young kids to be brave and grow into confidence and talent from the start of their lives all the way through their lifetime. It's an honest and simple traditional moral way to live life that these people have kept on living by in spite of the growth of modern sensibilities. Her modern urban sensibilities make her the "odd person out" personality in that crowd, not that that means those people there aren't welcoming of her being there though.

@@zachbrown210Y'know that's pretty much true of most big world cities, right? People from all over? The diversity of the 50 countries in Europe dwarfs the diversity in the 50 US states. Europe (not the EU) is roughly the same size as the US, has much more infrastructure, a 50% bigger GDP, twice the population, and a higher standard of living. The US is awesome, and as a single country we are very diverse, but we're isolated and a bit parochial in our sensibilities about other countries. If Europe didn't have so much infighting and could all work together, united, they could become world-dominant easily. We've begun to forget that lesson ourselves, staying united.

PBR or Professional Bull Riders circuit is probably what you saw televised. It’s the biggest rodeo circuit with the pros that ALL have sponsors, usually more than one. You’ll see the emblems on their shirts and vests. Don’t worry about the animals. They’re treated like royalty. You should check out some behind the scenes video about the bulls. Fascinating! Also, when you watch, you’ll see a rating on the bull. The higher the rating, the higher the possible points the rider can get. The rider is scored on several things including technique but they have to stay on for 8 seconds to be in the game. Videos to check out: Worst bull riding wrecks (for each year) and any video about Bodacious, the most famous bucking bull.

In rodeo, your mainly just competing against one another for highest scores or lowest time depending on event. Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Steer Dogging and Mutton Busting. But recently they've started having team/group events in each category.

Also, this was primarily a youth rodeo, age limit 14. You're scored on 0-50points for the animal, 0-50 points for rider. In each state, the rodeo travels around to different arenas through out the season, so one arena may only see that "youth" event once a year. Like those boys said, this was their second rodeo that weekend, because there was another one going on somewhere else.

If they sold or bought cattle, they moved them to the buyer by herding them, rather than shipping them. There are pathways so that they can me and the journey on foot, with the ranch hands and dogs herding them along the paths.

I live in Colorado and we along with our neighboring state of Wyoming have some of the largest and most competitive rodeos in the country. Rodeo is so much fun to go to and watch. Injuries happen but they are more rare than you’d think. Lane Frost was one of the last cowboy to die in a big competition when his broken rib punctured an artery and he bled to death in minutes. His ride was successful, but after he dismounted the bull hit him hard. The most recent a was in September 2023. That was Skee Burkes, he was 26. The thing is, cowboys know the risks and they do it anyway because it is SO MUCH FUN!

Scoring is based on the horse or bulls bucking (the better the buck, the higher the possible score) and technique together. Bronc riding technique is - do they keep their non-strapped hand up well, do they stay well centered on the horse, where their feet are placed and timing and spurring as well as a few other little things. They must ride for 8 seconds to even get a score.

Earl Bascom was born in utah, and his father moved the family to Raymond, Alberta, after his mothers death. the Bascom boys were bull and bronc, riders, but Earl was also the inventor of the modern bucking chute (1919), hornless bronc saddles, one-handed bareback bronc rigging, and in 1935, he and one of his brothers (this time in the States instead of Canada) introduce electric lights and (more importantly) Brahman Bulls. Also from Utah, Oscar Raymond Knight (aka Ray), whose father Jesse founded the town of Raymond and named it after his son, is also regarded as the first rodeo stock contractor, organized (as mentioned, in 1902) the Raymond Stampede, Canada's first rodeo. In doing so he also coin the term "Stampede" (referring to a rodeo event).
@kentgrady9226

Rodeos began as competitions to assess the skills which real working cowboys need in order to raise livestock (primarily cattle) on open prairie. Calves need to be branded. Frequently, they are understandably reticent and evade the efforts of workers on the ground. Men on horses need to rope them and lash their legs together to stop them kicking. That's calf roping. Steers sometimes bolt from the herd, which in turn may cause the entire herd to stampede. A man on horseback may need to dismount and physically take the steer down by the head (hence, the expression, "taking the bull by the horns", which means to take control by decisive or aggressive means). That's steer wrestling. Ranch horses must be hardy and spirited. When they're young and unaccustomed to a rider, they are considered "green" or "unbroken". Cowboys must "break" or "bust" a colt/bronco in order to get the horse to take a saddle, tack and harness, and rider. That's bronco riding. Bull riding is not really part of true ranch work. It's simply an evolution of bronco busting. Ranch work is physical and dangerous. Competitive rodeo cowboys may or may not be proper working cowboys. Whether they are or not, they are elite athletes. Although I'm neither a rancher nor a cowboy, I live in cattle country and have the utmost respect for both working cowboys and competitive rodeo cowboys.

Here in Dallas, we have the Mesquite Rodeo and it is a big thing indeed. I worked in emergency medicine for years at a local trauma center and saw many cowboys walk in with broken bones, torn off thumbs, mangled body parts bent and pointing in the direction. If a cowboy (cowgirl) ever came not under their own power - on a stretcher for instance, we all worried because that cowboy / cowgirl was unconscious or hurt really bad. It is a very special culture and it is definitely taken serious. If you make it over here, I’ll be happy to take you and your family to dinner and then to the rodeo.

The Bullfighters are the guys who run out and distract the bulls to protect the cowboys. The pickup men ride up and help the cowboys off bucking horses. Both groups are highly respected for saving lives. Cowboys go to rodeos getting points and winning money. They hope to go to the championships. Yes, they can get sponsored. Rodeos developed from cowboys bragging about their skills to each other. These are their work day skills. The championship bulls and bucking horses are bred specifically and are worth thousands. They are too valuable to mistreat. Stephanie Robey has you tube videos about the bulls. You might like Cross Timber Bison. It's about an Oklahoma rancher who raises bison.

I'm living at my 34th address from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the paradise of Hawaii. Most of my life has been in the western United States, including 24 years in Texas and 7 years in Wyoming. Rodeos are big in Texas, particularly in San Antonio where I lived for over 20 years, and Cheyenne, Wyoming where they hold the "Grandaddy of them All" rodeo during Frontier Days at the end of July every year. So, I've been to quite a few rodeos. To me it's a misnomer to refer to rodeos as a sport. Rodeos are a demonstration of the skills required by ranchers. My favorite rodeo events are the barrel races (women riding horses around a set of three barrels for time), mutton bustin' (little kids riding sheep), team roping (a pair of cowboys trying to rope a calf) and tie-down roping (or calf-roping, a single cowboy trying to rope and tie a calf). The skill and teamwork required for these events are very impressive, and practical for ranchers. I don't really care for bronco or bull riding as they're pretty much just hype and not much more than a demonstration of machoism at the unnecessary expense of both animal and riders. Steer wrestling is impressive, but once again, I think it still leans more to the machoism than pragmatic side of things. Rodeos are competitive events, but I really don't care about the competition, I just enjoy watching cowboys and cowgirls demonstrating the very pragmatic skills that have been, and to a large degree, are still needed on a working ranch in the American west. I can't think of anything that is more distinctively American than a rodeo.

12:40 the judges score based on two factors. Length of ride and difficulty of ride. Length of ride is easy enough, how close you get to 8 seconds. Difficulty is more objective, but say that one horse keeps his front legs on the ground while bucking, but another horse is throwing all 4 feet in the air while twisting. The latter is more difficult, and gets more points.

Over a half century living in a small New Mexico town with an annual rodeo. Went a lot as a kid, especially when I got a stepbrother from a more rural part of the state who DID rodeo stuff at 15. Haven't been to one in decades , even though I literally drive by it when it's happening every year. Just not exciting enough anymore. But when I was younger, I saw the appeal of doing this and knew a lot of people who did it just for fun, or for the money or both. I had a brief fling with thinking about doing some stunt riding myself at 16, but had an accident on my horse (involves hitting cactus at a gallop), got spooked and lost my nerve, and swore off any thought of doing rodeos myself, although I still supported anyone family members who wanted to. You'll see bigger bulls and more thrilling rides in some big Dallas auditorium, but I'd prefer a good old country rodeo with kids and teens just having fun - no profit motive - any day. Have not been to a rodeo in years, no interest anymore. In contrast I DO still go to as many Native powwows as possible every year, especially the annual Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, which is beyond amazing.

Yes, Montana is unfortunately Trump country. Rodeo isn't really popular except in western states and southern states with a western state of mine

I'm pretty sure that the start of rodeo involved cowboys and alcohol. I'm willing to also bet that the first bull ride ever done was preceded by the words, "Hey! Watch this shit!"...... which are also the famous last words of many rural daredevils. I understand that the animals are very well cared for and are VERY expensive to buy and keep. In professional rodeo, many of the animals have fan followings and are thought of as athletes themselves. They and their offspring are worth $$$$$$.

Rodeos are in every state. This gal is a little dramatic worrying about stuff. Nobody cares if she films and if she wanted to wear the hat she should've worn the hat. Nobody cares. People do what they want. We have professional bull riding and there's different organizations doing different things. The rodeos have multiple components. Our high school has an annual rodeo as do other places where I live. A greased baby pig gets a sack full of cash tied to its neck and the kids chase it and try to get the cash. Our kids aren't sissies. Your son would love it. The animals are treated very well. They like it too.

The meaner and more aerobatic the animals the higher the score if you last a minimum of 8 seconds in bucking competitions

The ride is judged only for the 8 second duration, the animal and rider are both scored 0-50 then the score is combined
