I was 14 years old when this song was released. I was already an experienced in orchestra, and rock music, and a big fan of Buffalo Springfield. I was totally blown away by this song as it provoked such an all encompassing sound, and strong chilling feel. I didn't learn this until much later that Expecting to Fly was written, and recorded exclusively by Neil Young, using the top studio musicians of the era, without Any input from the other members of Buffalo Springfield, which engenders more respect for Neil Young as an solo artist from me. I send a special shout out here to Jack Nitzsche, who did all of the orchestral arrangements, and electric piano, Carol Kaye played bass guitar, and Jim Gordon on Drums.

This was my generation's music, and to this day, when I hear this song, I cry. Such an emotional tour de force, and so hauntingly beautiful.

We're so happy that you've discovered the wondrous Buffalo Springfield. I was 17 in 1966, and this group was an essential part of my psychic well-being. Their other great album is "Retrospective" (1969), which is a collection of their best songs. Around this time, Neil Young produced his eponymous debut album. It is also wonderful, and timeless treasure from start to finish.

Unfortunately Neil stopped composing similar songs. I guessed the last one was Ä Man needs a Maid". Perhaps because he no longer collaborated with Jack Nietzche

The late 60's was a time of great musical experimentation. The Beatles lead the way ofcourse and all the new bands like The Springfield were creatively free to explore unlimited musical directions. Another great band that explored life in music was The Moody Blues. If you were to indulge in an Album Reaction definately start with Days Of Future Passed. 1967. Thanks for the Reactions to great music. I would love to be hearing it all for the first time again!

Was surprised by this track tbh which made me think of the Moodies, even though the timbre of Neil Young's vocals was so different.

The '60's-'80's were such overflowing creative times for great musics. I'm still being introduced to wonderful pieces I missed first time around. Like this one. I was a little kid in 1966. 'Never heard "Expecting To Fly" before. Thanks!

"Chills" -- you bet. it's too beautiful for words. Jack Nitzsche did the production and orchestration. I'm not really sure if many of other buffalo Springfield were intimately involved. This was Neil and Jack's baby. Keith Richards said he cried when he first heard it -now THAT's an endorsement! oh, as an aside, I think the ending was actually the beginning of the song at first and then jack did orchestration. but in the end, this was mostly Neil

It's you, Deep Dive, who are amazing. You're such a perfect conduit to the music you listen to for the first time, it's enchanting, watching you respond so intuitively & honestly. Can't get enough of your reactions, you're probably the very best.

@@deepdivemusicreactions the White Album is the most random collection of their songs. Some rock some acoustic guitar and some tape loops here and there! Thx for the reply! Maybe try Abbey Road or Let It Be, their last two albums. ✌🏽

Wonderful song! Would second @Henry Cole recommendation of The Moody Blues. While Days of Future Past is a great place to start the journey, the second of the classic seven albums, In Search of the Lost Chord would be my pick to begin with. Also, for your listening pleasure you might want to check out the "White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day. Think you will really like it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqe6o3mnr5uIm7M
