and country where they won another grammy singing with Dolly Parton and her song "Jolene". edit: oh! And some of my faves come from Mitch and Scott's previous life ass Super Fruit - Broadway! "Defying Gravity" is not to be missed. Oh, and Disney where Super Fruit teamed with Kirstin to do "Frozen". Both awesomely great and funny. And if you go down the sideshoots of PTX, one cannot miss Kevin's channel and "Down" with electric cello and beatbox mixing.

Welcome to the "rabbit hole"!! So glad I found you...love watching people discovering Pentatonix for the first time! These guys are beyond talented, every single one of them. They don't do anything that they can't perform live so what you are hearing is just their voices. Kevin, the beatboxer is multitalented and also sings and plays multiple instruments. If they do use an instrument you will see it!! Enjoy the journey!

@@SalvoG They have a live performance vid of this song on YT where you can see when Scott takes it over. Seamless. You can also see/hear Kevin's body percussion. It's a little muted compared to this studio version, but still there. Then only do minimal engineering, try to keep their studio vids faithful to their live sound.

The show of artistry is in how they make different choices. Voice may have a different feel, another tries something nee so you go with it, etc. While anything they video is something they have down to perform live, live should differ from recorded or you may as well just pipe it in. Rather like how a cover is not a copy, nor should it be.

Since you are a beatbox guy you should really check out Kevin's (KO's) "Renegade" & "Down". He invented an artform known as Celloboxing where he beatboxes and plays the cello at the same time. Much love and keep on keepin on. Also, I always recommend you go to the beginning and watch their "Sing Off" performances 1 to 12. The performances are live it introduces you to the members and it's great music. J.

What you'll find the more you react to them is this is a group with no egos. It's about the music. Singing like this, especially live is extremely difficult because you're singing background vocals then belt then right into background again. Very little time to breathe. No instruments to hide behind and they are masters. When you learn to focus on what's being done in the background as well as lead then you grow to appreciate the amazing otherworldly talent of each of them. At least that's how it worked for me. Enjoying your reactions to PTX and looking forward to many more.

Drums sounds are usually made by Kevin’s mouth. He has some crazy drum sounds, I’ve always been impressed with how real his toms sound. It’s like he is a drum kit. If you want to hear the new bass singer, Matt, I recommend The Sound of Silence, or 90s Dance Medley. Any of their “evolution of” videos are done in all one take. Their popspring concert has 4 pieces on it, three of which are originals. Bohemian Rhapsody is always a good time.

Kevin is somehow running three different beats simultaneously. One with his kick. One with his slaps. One with his mouth. The man is unfairly talented. Each of the members of PTX has solo stuff that is amazing. Kevin does one-man-band music that is next level. Check out his KOver of 'Down' and prepare yourself. You've been warned.

You have prbly already been told most of this, but just in case...First off they do occasionally use instruments, but you will see them if they are being used! Scott, tall blonde, baritone, but with a huge range, also takes over bass when bass is singing. He also plays piano in a couple songs. Avi (ahh-vee) (in the 2 songs you have watched) was with the group until 2017 (ONLY member change), he left because he wouldn't keep up with the pace and for family medical reasons. Matt replaced him, different kind of bass/sound, but brings something different to the group and just as cohesive. Kevin, beatboxer, also a classically trained on the cello, which you will see in some songs. Was in medical school when approached to join the group in 2011. Kirsten, also goes by Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty), mezzo soprano. Her looks change a lot. Mitch, high tenor, has the voice of our generation. Also changes looks a lot. If you have to ask is that Mitch, it is! Scott, Mitch and Kirstie (also called the trio) met as children (8-10) in Arlington TX, where they grew up and continued to go to school together through high school. Scott and Kirstie graduated in 2010 and went off to college. In 2011 Scott was approached about competing on an a capella show The Sing Off. He immediately contacted the other two to be on it with him. Then they found out they needed at least 5 to compete. Found Avi through a friend of a friend and Scott found Kevin on you tube with a viral video he had of him playing cello and beatboxing at same time (he calls it celloboxing). Mitch skipped his high school graduation to be on the show. They all met together for the FIRST time a day before auditions. (if interested in that journey, there are videos of each performance post by Mr Muckbear) They won the show, $200,000 and a Sony recording contract. They moved to LA and right after was dropped by Sony, saying people would never get their sound. So they decided to do it themselves and took to KZbin. Their videos started going viral and was eventually signed by RCA. They have won 3 grammys, first one being for Daft Punk. They have approximately 300 videos posted on their channel. The majority of their songs will have a live video posted by someone or themselves. They continue to tour and record to this day, Scott just the other day, on Insta that at this time they are busy writing. They just came off their latest Christmas tour(which I went to and was amazing) and will be leaving soon on another tour. LOL and the rest is history. I know, a lot of info at one time.

So happy I found you. Stubbed and looking forward to more PTX. I could probably rattle off a dozen of their songs that I love but then I'd think of another dozen that I also love. Doesn't make much difference what you play, they're all excellent. A few suggestions are Sound of Silence, gold, Havana and their second Grammy masterpiece, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which was written by Tchaikovsky for The Nutcracker ballet, a song with no words sung by a group with no instruments.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Bohemian Rhapsody really highlights Kevin’s beat boxing. He sounds like he swallowed a drum kit. For a real high energy original song, Sing is a great choice. Kevin can do amazing drum imitations with his voice and throat, In this video he's also using stomp pads (in his shoes) and pickups in the leather coat for slaps. He does this live as well. In their original tune "Sing," he raps "KO on the beat, OK - I'm the human 808." They are indeed in a hot desert, but because this was to be included in a holiday album, they are dressed for winter. Minimal after-processing is done to most of their songs. You can find information on this topic from their engineer Ed Boyer online, including an interview here on YT with Jacob Restituto. Additional songs where they do uptempo: Love Again (an early original by them), Problem (Ariana Grande cover), La La Latch (a mashup of two songs), Evolution of Michael Jackson (use the live version from the Popspring 2016 concert - they are dynamite in concert), Come All Ye Faithful (yes, the Christmas carol, but you've never heard it like this), Attention (with bass Matt Sallee, after Avi's departure in 2017), News Rules x Are You That Somebody (mashup, with Matt), Blinding Lights (The Weeknd cover, filmed in their homes during pandemic lockdown, with Matt), and I Saw Three Ships (British Christmas tune, carol from the most recent album, the holiday release Evergreen).

Check this one out live. I think you will be even more amazed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/npKpeaWcost7mMU The gentleman in the beanie and beard is the basso proundo Avi (pronounced Ah-vee) Kaplan. His voice is like chocolate. It's warm and emotional and of course super low. His low notes have blown out many a speaker. Avi left the band in late 2017 and has an amazing solo career now. Matt Sallee is the current bass for the group. The beatboxer Kevin Olusola attended Yale and had completed his pre-med studies when he was found by the group. He was preparing to be a doctor. He plays the cello and the group found him on youtube playing cello and beatboxing at the same time. Kevin coined this as cello boxing. The trio, Scott Hoying (tall baritone), Kirstin Maldonado and Mitch Grassi (counter tenor extraordinaire) grew up together in Texas. Scott and Ben Bram (arranger/producer) wanted the trio to compete in season 3 of a televised singing competition called the Sing Off. However, they needed at least 5 members. Ben decided they needed a bass and beatboxer. Ben knew Avi who had a reputable reputation as a basso profundo. The band has 3 Grammy wins in their earlier career. They are magical and all are super talented.

If you want to be utterly blown away, then I'd recommend Bohemian Rhapsody next. (And note that Brian May from Queen posted the link to that video a couple of times on Twitter and hyped them as the best cover he'd heard.) If you want them to bring you to church, so to speak, their rendition of Amazing Grace is where to go. If you want them to purge your social angst, so to speak, their cover of Sound of Silence is worth listening to. If you want some nostalgia for the recent past (well, it is to me!) then their 90's Dance Medley is superlative. If you want a last whiff of Christmastime, they have many many many holiday albums out, but this last season they simply blew the roof off of everything they had done previously with their arrangement of The Prayer, covering the Celine Dion/Andreas Boccelli version in one of their most amazing arrangements yet. If you're tired of winter and want a more summery cover, Can You Feel the Love Tonight from the Lion King is a cover worth listening to. If you think that everything in the news today is just nuts, Mad World cover should be next. If you wish that humankind could just chill out and get along, their cover of John Lennon's Imagine will be for you. So... what are you in the mood for? :)

If I remember correctly they are in the Mojave desert and it actually summer but they are wearing those outfits to make it Seem like it's done in the winter. Hallelujah Was Put out not as a Christmas song but just a song. Since Pentatonix put this on 1 of their Christmas albums that's when people started to associated with Christmas. Then loved your reaction "Yeah...oh yeah" that's Mitch Grassi, counter tenor. For more of Mitch's vocals I see that you already did The Prayer, Bohemian Rhapsody and Gold. You should also react to Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Can't Sleep Love (live at Popspring 2016), Can't Help Falling in Love with You, Anchor, Take On Me, Come Along, Cheerleader. More PTX please. You have a section on your channel for beat boxing . . . . Kevin, their beat boxer also "cello-boxes" (plays the cello & beat boxes at the same time). It's insane.

This video was shot for a Christmas release, but they filmed it in the middle of the Mojave Desert in 90 degree temperatures. They wore coats to try to make it look wintery.

The second singer here is Avi Kaplan. He was the bass for Pentatonix from 2011 to 2017. His parting was amicable, and since 2017, the PTX bass has been Matt Sallee. So in older videos, you’ll still see Avi in the group!

They are such an amazing group. They go above and beyond what you might think an acapella group would be capable of, and each individual is astounding in their own ways. I also just love this song in generl and never get tired of covers of it. Another great cover of this was done by Puddles Pity Party. much more melancholy, but equally powerful. He also did Sound Of Silence among many others and is worth checking out.

Thanks for the reaction. Some of my favorite are Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody and Evolution of Michael Jackson. Also please check out some of their original music “Sing”, “Can’t Sleep Love” and “A Little Space” are some of my favorites. They’ve made a lot of videos in 10 years, so go in whichever order you like. Kevin the beatboxer can make drum sounds with his mouth - Bohemian Rhapsody is a good example of this. Thanks again.

Subbed for more Pentatonix reactions. I, too, suggest starting with the early stuff and working up so you can follow their growth. I love almost everything so it's hard to make suggestions about where to go from here, but several folks have given you good ideas.

PTX is an all a cappella group, so any sounds you hear are made with mouth and body. They don't use instruments except now and then Kevin, the beatboxer, does play the cello. If you watch closely you will see Kevin, far left, stomping and chest thumping. The leather jacket he is wearing gives the slapping sound that you hear. They are so EPIC>

If you react to it, they will come… Your channel will grow exponentially, if you react to Pentatonix (we’re Pentaholics.) Your channel will grow exponentially, if you react to Home Free (a country a Capella group- we’re Home Fries.) Your channel will grow exponentially, if you react to Voiceplay (a very theatrical a Capella group-we’re Voiceplayers.) No competition between them!!! They even collaborate with each other on arrangements or do cameos in each other’s videos!! Taking on all 3 groups is a wild ride and a continuously growing Rabbit Warren, since each group puts out at least one new video a month, often more!!! Sit back, crank your headphones and enjoy the ride 🤪

The drum sound after the stomp is him beatboxing while striking his chest. To see this live look at their live Christmas version. That was majestic!! They have about 4 hours of Christmas music. He (Kevin) uses stomp boards on the live versions. Subbed

For a somewhat related rabbit hole to go down, check out Avi Kaplan's (the bearded bass here) solo work. Most reactors start with his most successful original song so far, "Change on the Rise", in which he does all the vocal layers and sounds (aside from some synth organ and tambourine in the bridge). About 90% of the music he does is original. His latest release, "All Is Well", a collaboration with vocalist Joy Williams, is getting rave reviews. He's going on his 2nd European tour next month, and then another US tour in June.

if you preferred their daft punk medley, you could check out their EDM inspired original song, "Love Again", and there's a good quality live version "Love Again (Live on 24/7)" if you're interested in comparing studio vocals vs live !! (the 24/7 reupload is from 2017 but the video itself is from 2014, to avoid confusion lol)

Find the Hallelujah live performance. They don’t need any acoustic help although they use it. They always say they try never to record anything they can’t do live on tour. If you watch Shallow or Say Something you’ll be introduced to Beyoncé, Kevin’s cello. He is classically trained and also speaks 6 languages including mandarin and was studying premed before taking the leap of faith to join this group 10 years ago for the talent show Sing-Off (where they won season 3). If you watch all of their appearances on that season you’ll get a good idea of how good they were right from he beginning. They do gospel, soul, Broadway, pop, hip hop and rap. You will not be ready.

Follow the rabbit!! It's ok to like all of the voices and have the entirety of PTX as your favorite. Its exciting to see you watch these videos. There is no one way to travel down the PTX hole, you just find that you'll want to watch everything more than once. Amazing Grace was powerful, and so is the Prayer, Mary Did You Know and their solo work. Kevin is a machine, but Scott voice and talent can like wise do all roles from bass to falsetto. Kirstie is angelic and Matt/Aviv are extraordinarily deep voices. Mitch's voice allows you to appreciate non auto tuned things, but auto tune isn't evil: 90's Dance Melody really taught me that.

Hello from Arizona 🏜️ I really enjoy your Pentatonix reaction videos... I'm sure you've been bombarded with information on the group as well as recommendations so I'll try to send a couple of ones that I haven't seen too often. Their mashup videos are unbelievable... Check out: "LaLa Latch" & If you like the beatboxing vibe, a lesser recommend video that's actually one of my favorites is their mash up "New Rules x are you that somebody"... It's another one that you'll scratch your head... thinking "HOW!?!" ... but eventually, watching enough of this AWESOME group, that feeling will transform into just pure respect and enjoyment!! There are a few other mashups that they've done in their early years. ALL of their Holiday songs (my personal favorite is "Mary Did You Know" & the live version of this one, "Hallelujah") and I look forward to watching more PTX reactions from you! Have a great week!!! Jill
