There where a few singers doing that back then. Kittie, Otep, Straight Line Stitch, to name a few. According to Tatiana, she learned to scream and growl because of Otep. And don't forget, she joined Jinjer in 2010.

Toured a bit with IWABO during this era. They were a riot, and people always left shows talking about them. What they’re playing is structured, but not in the way most people write and structure songs. They write riffs in a bunch of different keys, then assemble riffs in one key into a song. When Courtney replace Krysta, and Mike eventually joined on guitar (both now of Spiritbox), the songs became slightly more structured and less controlled chaos. Gift Of Death is the most notable song of the later era. There was a few other bands with female vocalists doing that sort of singing screaming thing (Kittie immediately comes to my mind) in the early 2000’s.

Tatiana was in several bands before Jinjer, and has been singing both styles since seeing Otep in roughly 2003 (Tatiana says she saw them for the first time when she was 15-16), so it’s been around for quite some time for several singers. Internet has made it possible to discover them now, and it’s all amazing to see the skill levels involved.

Yep, Otep Shamaya is arguably the first real standout clean/growl female artist. She has a good range, and a brutal growl, though I've never heard her do a clean belt and suspect she couldn't get anywhere near Courtney or Tati for vocal range. I always get 'very very angry Pink' vibes. Without her as an inspiration Tati may never have gone down the path she did.

One year later, Floor Jansen was cutting between growls, belting and operatic head voice with ReVamp. Simone Pujilmers of Cerebral Bore was doing even more impressive growls eleven years ago. Courtney Laplante, now of Spiritbox, replaced Krysta in 2012. Not taking anything away from Tatiana, but she wasn't the only one.

Sir. The only things around like this in 2008 was like flyleaf, first album in this moment and arch enemy. IWABO combined it all and they got on to metal sucks for like 3 months and then it was like nope. This band is amazing and I’m glad someone else noticed this was well before it’s time. Most girls in the scene mention 👆this band. Even Courtney from spirit box said this was her inspiration and then joined the band. From what I’m lead to believe.

Here's the thing, Jinjer's "Pisces" video got popular among reactors partly because it hit at just the right time, right before reaction channels started to take off, and also (not to take away from the rest of the band, who are amazing musicians) because Tatiana is particularly good at switching between harsh and clean vocals, with a very deep, almost masculine-sounding, growl that not too many women can emulate. But they were hardly the first band with a female vocalist doing harsh vocals, or even switching between growls and cleans. In addition to iwrestledabearonce, Kittie was doing similar things back in the early 2000s, as were Arch Enemy and Walls of Jericho using purely harsh female vocals (no cleans). Otep was combining harsh vocals with clean singing (though her cleans were often more akin to rap or spoken word) in the mid-late 2000s, and In This Moment (along with several other bands) was mixing up clean and harsh female vocals in the mid-2000s (and doing it extremely well - Maria Brink is fantastic). My point with this little snippet of history isn't to take anything away from Tatiana or from Jinjer - I love them, they're a great band, and they're outstanding at what they do. But musically, what they are doing is evolutionary more than it is revolutionary, if that makes sense. If you're interested in more, definitely check out any of these bands I've talked about, particularly their mid-2000s work, if for no other reason than to put modern trends into a historical perspective.

Late, so this probably won't be seen, but Alissa White-Gluz was doing ranged screams and singing in 2008 as The Agonist's lead vocalist. I don't think lows+highs for both cleans+screams were shown of in a single song until their 2012 song "The Escape," but any of the first five songs from Lullabies For The Dormant Mind work. Also, Danger In The Manger is another great IWABO song from the same album that shows here talent and the band's uniqueness

As others have commented. This wasn’t the first band to have this kind of lady vocals. I can name a few others that aren’t in the comments. Also, as others have stated, Courtney of Spiritbox was in this band. Left to start Spiritbox. You mentioned Jinjer. They formed in 2009. Walls of Jericho, a band mentioned in the comments, formed in 1998 and also had a female lead vocalist who screamed/growled. Arch Enemy formed in 1995 and had a female vocalist who had aggressive vocals. Point is, this isn’t new. Just had been overlooked. Each day more and more women put themselves out there as musicians and vocalist in these heavy genre bands and I think it’s a great thing. Especially for the metal scene for what should be obvious reasons. (Edited for spelling)

Oh, there were a lot of ladies in extreme metal back in the days, even in the 90s or 80s. Fear of God, Holy Moses... the Dutch death metal band Sinister had a female singer for a while, the lady screamed and growled in the Dutch band Occult before. We have Angela Gossow for Arch Enemy. And when I lived in Heidelberg back in the 90s there was this technical death metal band from Ludwigshafen/Kaiserslautern called Amorph Pneuma with the female vocalist Bambi, and she probably had the deepest growls I've ever heard... even deeper than Tatiana and Courtney and the lady in this video. Extreme female vox are not THAT new - but I am glad that all the women in metal are much more present nowadays.

Yeah the person who replaced Krista was no other than Courtney Laplante, she’s the singer of Spiritbox

Who was doing that? Otep, Arch Enemy, Kittie, Wendy O. Williams/Plasmatics (RIP), Butcher Babies, Flyleaf, (will add more as I think of them)

Otep was kind of doing it even before this. She would switch between slam/pseudo rap poetics, grows, occasional singing, talking, and whispering; though she did mostly pseudo rap and growls now she uses more singing but still mixes up all sorts of styles.

I love this band so much! :D I recently discovered them. But check out this: The Agonist - Business Suits and Combat Boots (Once Only Imagined album, 2007) It's older. And Alissa can sing, yes. And she can growl, yep.

ah Krysta Cameron. The woman who Courtney LaPlante calls her idol...yet has never met her despite replacing her. Krysta quit after she got knocked up by the dude from Fair To Midland. That guy is an incredible vocalist too and somehow got a song about Penises turned into a single and music video. Bet their kid has an awesome voice.

"Otep" and "The Agonist" did that in 2008/09 as well. Listen to "Blood Pigs" and "Warhead" & "Thank You Pain" respectively. Even earlier than that is Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy, who was growling like this in 2000. Look up "Nemesis" by them. Before that even you have bands like Kittie from the 90s; See "Brackish" and "Spit." Jinjer isn't the pioneer of this sound, just the latest.
