ADHDers not only tend to binge/crave foods more due to dopamine seeking, but they are also much more biologically sensitive to the effects that food has on us. Things like hormonal and blood sugar fluctuations from things like forgetting to eat all day then eating a ton in one go, having unbalanced meals i.e. eating sugar/refined carbs without protein and fat (basically our unhealthy modern eating habits) are WAYYY more pronounced compared to neurotypical people and exacerbate ADHD symptoms.

@oolala537 ай бұрын
When you really get that the pain of giving something up won’t really be as bad as the pain of overdoing something you either feel or know is hurting more than helping ( with admitted pleasure,) it gets easier to face down the withdrawal. I do use stevia but have had very few days since 1/1/20 with more than 10 g of sugar. This was after decades of struggle, but more from the vantage point of hating my body and wanting to lose weight, but I clamped down on that at age 56. I still ate sweets, but was able to learn to limit them to weekends and a couple of celebratory days a month but I realize that I didn’t enjoy them that much in small quantities and I kept hearing of people who gave up desserts and such and felt very free. Since 2020 was the beginning of a new decade, I decided that would be my decade of experiment. I probably couldn’t have thought in those terms when I was in my 30s, but I was older and realize that I’d already had more sugar than most previous humans had had and more than one lifetime. I honestly can’t see any big reason to have it besides a few bites on Thanksgiving or Christmas time. Flour foods are another story. I just went for blood test today. I’m now age 70, and those numbers have become a lot more important to me because I have less time to correct problems. I know you is not actually very motivated by the prospect of old age, but your senior yourself will definitely thank you for being willing to go through those incredibly irritating urges to eat food with very little nutrition but lots of dopamine reward.

for me its not the sugar that I crave or something, Im just, I forgot the whole day that I need to eat, than Im hungry whats the easiest fastest way to get over with this, so a bar of chocolate won often. But its also bad for the stomach and everything , high bloodsugar and what not. Nowadays I found some other ways to have easy food in reach, shakes and some kitchen changes like a rice cooking machine, but its still a pain. but "quitting sugar" without an alternative would not have helped a bit. Unfortunately there is no professional help for these problems, all dietary consultants I spoke with are only specialized on people who eat too much, no one is there for the adhd I forgot eating and run on cheese and chocolate while being actually underweight crowd

So (and I hope Roxanne sees this cause I'd love her opinion) excess sugar intake, excess alcohol, excess substances can have a very similar effect on me and my decision making. Only difference is I'm more "aware" of my behaviour and thought process if it's only sugar. I'm currently 2 years sober from Alcohol and 3 years sober from drugs but need to be very careful when it comes to sugar consumption as it can produce similar effects to me drinking and drugging. I have tried to quit sugar altogether and it's like all the colour is turned off from my life, add to this I also have autism and a lot of comfort or safe food is packed with sugar. Cutting down on sugar makes me feel as though I have my ADHD more under control than normal and can give me a more streamlined less boxed in hyper focus but those hyper focuses aren't always as lucid as what they have been. I call them blurry hyper focus (like Im in a hyper focus but squinting throughout)

The smell disappeared after a few days 😂 I went on a low carb diet for a couple of years and found my thinking, energy, skin, weight etc massively improved. I was probably more hyper though after the first 10 days. It was one of those duets where you fast from all carbs, dairy, gluten for 10 days followed by a carb feast the eve of the 10th day where you eat what you like until full then you're back to carb fasting for 4 days and so the cycle continues. It was excellent until Christmas then I'd fall off the wagon over Christmas then start back up a few days after new years. I soon started to make my carb feasts much healthier and found that worked even better for my health as a whole. I couldn't sustain it though so I switched to the Mediterranean diet which is much better.

So i dont actually know what he said bur still, i take any and all food advice with a grain of salt. Literally everyones nutrition needs are different, the same with ADHD. The issue with someone like Joe Wicks misspeaking is that his words have power and i know that people will follow his words, intentional or not, as gospal. I love the conversation around food and ADHD cause it is important. But id advise extreme caution around someone blaming or intending to insinuate that sugar worsens ADHD, as if it didnt fuck with everyone lol.

I tell myself I take one each day, but I end up walking to the fridge in 5-10min intervals and eating the whole thing in a day 😂. I even do it with cakes/pies 😭😭😭😭 thank god meds make me binge less

Combine adhd with pcos, and it makes sense why I feel good on keto

Diet must play a part but I thought the link between ADHD and "E-numbers" had been debunked years ago?

ADHD ers need no sugar and the keto diet and exercise then the symptoms of ADHD become at least a little manageable. From experience

I like food, but chocolate bars will make me crash. My girls love sugar. I'm still Adhd, but my eldest is super.

Just a thought that the brain needs glucose to function and our adhd brains are higher-powered so they need more glucose than others. Shame our pancreas and genes (in my case my fat cells) might not get the memo.

It can function even better burning fat rather than glucose. Keto/low carb.

My brain works pretty well when I stick with eating less than 50 grams of carbs a day. I've been doing this for three years

You might want to look into Durianrider here on KZbin. He has ADHD too and eats very high carb, low fat, fruit based, and seems to be doing really well. Very lean and healthy.

@@Wesenskern I'll have a look although if a dude, what works for men and boys doesn't work as well for women and girls, also we are the ones who do most of the food related tasks which with poor executive function skills amounts for a lot more difficulties for us than for men and boys

Before my last period, I ate 750g of Nutella in 24hrs. Got my period & the thought of chocolate made me sick. Hormones are a bitch on steroids with adhd

I can also confirm that the ice cream in the freezer should always be in there, although I never link it to any neurological predisposition such as adhd or thought about adhd for that matter. I didn't consider it that there was such food that that exacerbates adhd behavior🤔

It's helpful but also... How much more miserable would we all be if we never eat sugar ever again?
