Thanks for reacting to my playlist! That was a lot of fun and I hope you guys had fun too! Credit to Andrew Lloyd Webber for the utterly amazing song that is Gethsemane, and for Ian Gillan for working the original vocal. The grit and distortion in Johns voice is sublime, but what amazes me is his ability to be in complete control of it. His artistry is knowing when to apply it and when to NOT apply it. He just turns it on at will and still never, ever misses a note. He's such a natural talent that he has the room to act as well, as in he's not just concentrating on the music. Damn I love this performance - it just never gets old. I'm an atheist and I can't help but be moved by it.

Soooo many people claim John Legend's version as the best - there is a video on YT that compares the two [as our Molly Meldrum would say] do yourself a favour and watch it. John Farnham blows him out of the water with the grief and passion in his voice, and of course his range and the length he can hold a note with feeling. I don't know a soul who can watch this performance without goosebumps.

@kevintopliff49952 жыл бұрын
I was very fortunate to have attended Jesus Christ Superstar in Melbourne - it was performed entirely in the "round", a rotating stage with 50,000 plus people. The cast included rock legends, and A grades. Some you have reacted to - John Farnham - Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), Kate Ceberano, John Waters, Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Russell Morris. It broke records, with the cast recording an album which debut at #1 Australia, and remained there for 10 weeks. It was the "must see show" of 1992. Over 84 nights, 1 million people flocked to the show, grossing $40mill AUS in just 16 weeks.

Now, if a singer hit a certain note everyone stands, applauds and yells. So stupid because they interrupt the performance & make it hard to hear. When this was recorded people showed respect and restraint, wait for the performance to finish then ................ go NUTS over what they just experienced. John has been a constant through my life and I hope he recovers and enjoys life.
@carolcarol39382 жыл бұрын
It seems TO ME to be very much what American audiences do.... British, Australian (maybe European?) audiences wait till a performance finishes to applaud/react ..... as you note, Americans respond throughout the performance (sometimes making it hard to hear/appreciate, IMO, the total package)

John does a very good job and his voice is impressive as always. However, I am missing the angst and need in the voice of Ted Neeley. Ted sings this with more feeling while performing. This version seems a more updated version that misses some of that interaction with the stage. The movie, as avant garde as it was, has some outstanding singing performances in it and you should take a look.

That was decent. This is one of musical theater's greatest songs. I wasn't blown away by this version at all. Of course I love the original cast version of it, or the one that has the video that I think most people see. (And as I recall, its the one you reacted to before) BUT... my favorite all time version is Michael Ball doing it. He is one of my favorite male singers ever. He is/was pretty famous in England. He's been in many musicals. I don't know if he actually played this role though, but he has it on one of his CDs. I know he's not all that popular here, but if you ever decide that you want to check something else out, I'd click on any reaction to him INSTANTLY.
