This album is a sonic masterpiece. This would be the album you let someone borrow if you wanted to introduce them to Zep. It's the poppiest and thus the easiest to digest. OtHaFA is a top 5 song of their's.

“No Quarter” is a masterpiece. “Nasty guitar” indeed. Indeed. There is something to choosing the path no-one goes. And indeed, build a dream (better life) for everyone.

Dancing Days is amusing because Plant takes a girl out to a Party and promises her mother to get her home at a decent hour but he doesn’t own a car. So that’s the inside joke. Dyer Maker is quasi Reggae. Led Zeps take on the Reggae rhythm. No Quarter has one of the best riffs ever by Page. Then the album wraps up with one of Pages Tour De Forces. The incredible riffs of The Ocean! So they album ends on a high note! This is the kind of RnR satisfaction only Zep could deliver! Enjoy! Plant even says so at the end. Ah, it’s soo good! This album is a 10 out of 10!

“It’s kind of scary.” That’s probably why us Zeppelin fans love “No Quarter” so much. The dread seeping into the music is just…fantastic. Thanks for the reaction. Long Live Led Zeppelin. 🤘🏽

I should probably elaborate…us Zeppelin fans who lean into the heavier side of music. This album is incredible and has so much variety, but us fans that are into heavy music gravitate towards “No Quarter.” Much like another song from the next album (which I think she’ll recognize when she hears it). It’s all great.

Hi Verdy,👋 This side of the album is my favorite, I love every song. Page creating riff after riff, Jones as always superb and also letting his talent fly in No Quarter, Plant in his best vocal moment and finally who gives all the power to the Zeppelin sound, the great "Bonzo" Bonham...an earthquake in the drums. You are right, D'yer Mak'er is a reggae with all the power of Bonzo, the true protagonist of the song. Don't make us wait to hear Physical Graffiti, it's a masterpiece. 😎 Thanks for the reaction.

Stepped away from the traditional blues based rock that inspired them and getting more into contemporary grooves. The Crunge and Dancing Days are great examples of a funk or pop music influence and D'yer Mak'er is obviously Carribean/reggae inspired.

The music definitely has a chilling vibe to it, that's what makes it so great, the emotion that Zeppelin puts in their music, and that's also what puts them above all other bands. The only other band in the 70's that comes close is Pink Floyd, they also have strong emotion in their music

the '77 tour versions of NO QUARTER are arguably the best LIVE tune(s) that Led Zep ever recorded/played LIVE... Yes, I'd compare NQ LIVE (especially '77) to any Stairway/In my time of Dying/Kashmir/SIBLY, etc., LIVE, ever. P.S. There's a lot of treatments to NQ, but what you're wondering about is mainly keyboards and guitars running thru a a "LESLIE" rotating Speaker/amp.... I think.

I love watching your reactions to these classic albums! I pronounced it "Dyer Maker" when this album came out as well. It was not until years later that someone corrected me to "Didja make her" which is phonetic pronunciation of a joke set-up line. “I’ve just taken my wife on holiday to the Caribbean.” “Jamaica?” “No, she was happy to come.”

The easiest way to pronounce D'yer Maker is Jer Make Her. A bad joke about Did you make her and Jamaica sounding alike. No Quarter Jimmy is using a Fuzz pedal and the entire track was lowered a 1/2 step to add to the gloom. The Piano solo is fantastic. Robert sums up The Ocean at the end when he say's So Good. It was. A great album and a great reaction.

Hello, I’m happy you are enjoying Led Zepplin, my favorite band. Houses of the Holy is my favorite album. You can see how their music is evolving on this particular album. In the studio, Jimmy plays other guitar tracks on top of their songs because he’s the only guitarist. JPJ assists with bass, keyboards and mandolin. Also, Jimi’s recording engineer did panning in stereo so you can hear the guitar in one ear, then the other. Sometimes it sounds like multiple guitarists.

I think Verdy is referring to the “nasty” distorted guitar on No Quarter, not so much the bass guitar. I don’t know what effect or combination of effects one would use to achieve it, but I’ve always thought of the sound as “heavy on the mustard”.

D'Yer Ma'Ker: That's pronounced pretty much the same way you say the word, Jamaica but, it's taken from the way Brits would pronounce it. It comes from a joke they'd tell: A guy is talking with one of his friends and says he's going to be going on holiday with his wife. The friend asks, "Jamaica?" But it sounds like he said, "Did you make her?" As in, "Did you force her to go with you?" because, in England, they have a tendency to combine the words "did" and "you" and pronounce the "you" part as, "yer" so, combining both words comes out, "D'yer". So, the first guy, thinking the second guy said, "Did you make her?" says, "No, she's going of her own free will." As the song is reggae and reggae comes from Jamaica, that's why they called it that. No Quarter: That "wah-wah" sound is an electric piano with either a vibrato on it or some kind of wah pedal that makes the wah sound automatically without you having to do it manually. The cool thing about these videos is that it reminds me of when I first started seeing my future ex-fiance and she, being from India, knew very little about American music but loved what she knew about, and then there's me, with at least 36,000 records at that point (now, over 62,000) showing her all this great stuff she'd never heard OF before and having very similar reactions to her first listens as you're doing here.

Although an early version was recorded at the Led Zeppelin IV album sessions,[4] "No Quarter" was recorded in 1972 at Island Studios, London.[5] Andy Johns engineered the track and mixed it at Olympic Studios, London. The version that made it onto the album evolved out of a faster version Led Zeppelin had recorded earlier at Headley Grange, an old mansion in east Hampshire, England.[6] Jimmy Page applied vari-speed to drop the whole song a semi-tone, to give it a thicker and more intense mood.[7] In addition to the pitch change, the album version featured a very highly compressed guitar track, giving it a tone unique to Led Zeppelin. The guitar solo effect was achieved by direct injection and compression.[6]
