It brings tears to your eyes and a pain to your heart to think what these guys could have accomplished had they not lost John Bonham. One of the greatest tragedies in modern music.

I visit John Bonham's grave a couple of times a year and it always makes me cry. The words on the gravestone are so moving and it's always heavily decorated with so many trinkets left by visitors from all over the world, all mourning his loss.

Robert Plant was not long for led zeppelin at the time of Bonhans death . He had already checked our mentally after his son died and he never forgave page Jones and Grant for how the ghosted on him after his son died . His resentment is all over the lyrics on in through the out door . He no longer wanted to be in band where he was basically dictated to by page plant wanted to be his own master and tour when he wanted to tour. He also was very displeased with the heroin addiction that was crippling the band and their crew and management. Plant has openly stated that he would have been out of the band no later then the mid 80s and probably also sooner. Had the 1980 tour gone poorly Plant would have split. Page was an absolute mess . He was a Heroin addict a heavy cocaine user and an Alcoholic it's best that zeppelin stopped when they did because the decline had set in and it would have gotten worse by 1983 pages playing was a travesty page was out of ideas by the end of zeppelin

What's sad is Bonzo and Jimmy were on board with wanting their next album to be a totally heavy rocker. 'Wearing and Tearing' was the direction they were heading in but it sadly never came to be.

I loved that album, even though it's probably rated the lowest of all their 8 studio albums. For whatever that's worth or means. You say it's sad in retrospect because we know now it was near the end and they were still brilliant but would soon be gone. It's just as sad because I think Page in all his brilliance would've found a way to keep them relevant and putting out music that stayed true to the band but also would've blended in with the changing musical times that the 80s brought. Bands like the Stones, and to a lesser extent, the Who floundered and put out cruddy albums. The Stones especially. Zeppelin would've come up with something brilliant, I'm sure. Life sure is funny

I saw them in 77, they played for over 3 hours. As we were leaving the Kingdome, the band drove right by us. The Knebworth version of "Achilles Last Stand" is amazing, you should check it out.

12:00 the way Jimmy and Bonzo are pushing each other, and feeding off each other… is truly awe inspiring, and I could tell from your face that you appreciated the moment. Yes! Compared to the high arms we saw in the early days, there is a definite change. His movements appear more minimal, but also extremely strong,accurate and assured. If only he were still around,such a loss.

The performance just has such a lot of energy that's maintained throughout. That's probably why there's that slow bit in the middle - to emphasise the thundering ending. The five different drum melodies at the end together with the guitar is just amazingly effective in ending the song on a peak.

Jimmy spent a good amount of time making the sound the best he could when he produced and released the DVD and CD of Zep’s official live recordings. As a true Zep fan, Sal, you might wish to purchase that DVD. It’s great! Also, their live album How The West Was Won is excellent. And YES to the O2!

I'm excited to watch all the concerts with you Salvo! Each is different but all are magnificient! Led Zeppelin never disappoint. I'm happy to see Jimmy in a good condition now and I'm pleased he was able to get rid of his addicions!! Watching In The Evening I always have a feeling as if he was going to faint🙁but overall it sounds great!! Please watch hole concerts in terms of Robert's speaking to the crowd between the songs; some will make you laugh; he's explaining the origings of some songs; you'll see Jimbert😄see Zeppelin dance😄 You'll be able to see a lot of interesting things going on onstage (especially in Earl's Court and Seattle). Hope you'll be doing this that way. Thank you Salvo for your Zeppelin reactions❤️

I was there for the second concert. We'd waited for a long time. I remember Chas and Dave* ("Chas?" "Yes Dave?" "What the f@#k are we doing here?") opening the day and South Side Johnny and the Asbury Dukes, the New Barbarians (Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood) and Todd Rundgen's Utopia. We were so excited to see Zeppelin that we hardly noticed the poor sound quality and the less than together playing. It was epic. But we couldn't have known that it was to be the last one ever... * Chas and Dave were a pop duo playing pub singalong songs. They were fab!

Salvo , Late reply on this one..This concert was just prior to In thru the outdoor album being released which this track was from . For people like me living in a tent in a field a full week before the show they rehearsed this prior to the gig and we could hear it but no idea what it was . We soon found out . Sadly John died the following year and life was never the same …❤❤

'In Through the Out Door' is wildly underrated. I say this often and especially about this track...... but Jimmy Page's guitar solo during the recorded version of this song is the chortling, chump-chump-restarting of a melodic idea from 'Communication Breakdown', and then the CHUMP CHUMP CHUMP strangled., electric chords and then Bonham and then Jones. and then the strangled belts of Plant...if I thought of writing a review about a demonic choir, Hell's newsletter couldn't assign me a better, burning column. And then...and then...I just got to....oh

Your pronunciation of 'Knebworth' is actually spot on. it's about 3 miles from my home, as is Knebworth House, which was the venue for the concert. I got to see both weekends. 'In through the out door' IS different from previous LZ albums, because Jonesy had just taken possession of the Yamaha GX-1 'Dream Machine', and, being the first to arrive in the studio, was already well ahead of the curve when recording began. The whole album is much more focussed on Jonesy's keyboards than Page's guitar work. ( It is the GX-1 he is playing here on stage ). After LZ was over, Jonesy sold [ swapped for a sofa ] the GX-1 to Keith Emerson, who used it for spares for his existing one [ as seen on the 1977 video of 'Fanfare for the Common Man' ]. Some parts of it still exist, & came up for auction a couple of years ago, minus the pedal board, & some control boards. I suspect the audio was tapped directly off the mixing desk, rather than any ambient mikes, unless required in the mix for applause.

This was a fraught concert for Zep. First concert in two years. You know Robert almost left after his son died. His voice here is strong because he hadn’t been overworking it for awhile. But he has also admitted to being nervous as hell…because so much had happened since they’d last performed together. Jimmy was still dealing with major addictions…but was really making the effort to be clean as a condition for Plant to return. Bonham dealing with alcohol. But friends and family were at this concert (I believe this is from the first of the two nights they played) and they wanted to do well. I’m sure Henrietta and a few other folks on here know more details 😁

@@christopherone1 not for this concert specifically, but there WERE conditions for Plant to return to Zeppelin after the death of his son. How have I learned that? From several books I’ve read about Mr Plant and about Zeppelin (and no, not the garbage books…the serious ones). Robert doesn’t talk about this much on his podcast or interviews because he is respectful of Jimmy in this matter. And of course Jimmy NEVER addresses directly to his period of major addiction. It hurt too deeply at the time and affected their relationship. I assure you I’m not trying to make things up, Lauren. What’s the point of that? I have the upmost respect for both men.

@@christopherone1 I know they were all trying to hold it together extra hard since their hiatus after Karac passed. I know they were terrified and yes, did have only friends/family attending; not the usual scene. So, I'd say that is correct. This was to be their comeback, so to speak, since the current (at the time) punk scene called them dinosaurs, so their innate professionalism called for each of them to be in the best form they could possibly muster for this concert. I don't know if Robert put any conditions on this performance specifically, however, he did on the musical direction of the band; he wanted to flex some of his maturity and incorporate more sounds other than what they had at the time and also he made demands on touring - no super long tours, things like that. Sadly, we'd never see what those musical ideas would look like within Zep.

If yo see Jimy can observe the problem he had with the heroine. His face, his body, only his geniality was intact. Great song, amazing interpretations. The last Zeppelin,s concert was in BERLIN, 7-07.80, two or tree months before dramatical Bonzo,s death.

It is interesting how the younger generation has to put everything in it's little box. It was not like that back in the 60's and 70's. The most interesting bands changed up their sound through the years like Zeppelin and Rush. Rock has many influences Blues, Jazz, Classical to name a few. Bands back then were inventive and experimental. Today's music for most part is boring and uninspiring. It fits all the tiny boxes.

I'm not sure if you know this concert was a two-weekend affair? I think this is the August 4th show. This and the August 11th, which is the following Saturday, is pretty awesome as well. I prefer the August 11th because I think they did a better job on more of the songs. Anyway, some have disagreed with me. It's all a matter of opinion.

As Henry mentioned below, the album had been delayed in production, so the audience had never heard any of the songs from it. The band, especially Robert from what I’ve read was mightily pissed off about that. You normally want your audience to be familiar with the music and not go in cold

this is a burnt out Zep, Plants son had died the year before, Page and Bonham were deep into addictions and didnt show up to Karacs funeral. Plant was hurt, Bonzo wanted to quit, Plant wanted out, Page is a shadow of himself due to heroin. Jones is the only member in Zep not hurting bigtime here!

Well, mostly right. Karac died in summer of 1977, so two years before. Bonham was must definitely at Karac’s funeral. He flew home with Robert and he and his wife helped get Robert and Maureen through the agony of those first months. He snd Robert were best friends. He was always welcome at Robert’s home, except when he’d been drinking. Jimmy and JPJ did not show up. I don’t think Robert really wanted them there. But he was very hurt that they didn’t even contact him with their condolences. Frankly I don’t think they knew how to act around such tragedy. They thought Robert needed his space to grieve. And Robert did. But he was still deeply hurt. It was Bonham who convinced Robert to return to Zeppelin. Bonham seemed to love the playing but HATED the touring part. To paraphrase what Robert has said, “Bonzo helped save me, but lost himself”. And yes, Jimmy was physically a shadow of himself here.

That is the reason they never reunited. For Plant, LZ died with Bonham, because he didn't care about the other other two anymore because they didn't show up.

@@lawrenceflail3164 you know….Plant I think has forgiven them. Jimmy was strung out on heroin. So was Peter Grant. SOMEONE had to stay in the US and deal with cancelling shows and breaking commitments. Not exactly kind to say but someone had to deal with the economics of it. BUT, they could have called…send messages etc. I think Jonsey and Jimmy…raised in a different class and a different part of Britain where emotions were more suppressed, honestly didn’t know what to say…and that kind of massive overwhelming tragedy scared them. Bonzo shared Plants background….where people were more free with their feelings. He could be vulnerable to Robert’s searing grief whereas the others didn’t have it in themselves to do so. Perhaps I can relate because I was raised that way…and it wasn’t until I got older that I could emotionally deal with death in any way other than to pretend that everything was fine. Also, Robert I don’t think wanted them there. Not in the condition that Peter and Jimmy were in and considering the very dark and violent turn the tour had taken recently. Allot of dark undercurrents and stress and unhappiness had been building in Robert. That was the last thing he needed around himself and his family at that awful time. And the media circus would have been even worse were all of Zeppelin to be there at the funeral. That’s logical. But of course, logic doesn’t work at a time like that, and Robert wanted them there/didn’t want them anywhere near there, at the same time. But like I said…..I think he forgave them decades ago. I hope so anyway.

You're right, he has worked with Page extensively and there have been the Live Aid, O2 and the Atlantic shows, but I think it's only on his terms, and he still won't give them what they both want which is a reunion so there is some reason. It doesn't even make sense since he wouldn't be dishonoring Bonham's memory because Jason is technically in the band now. The other possibility I think, if he has really forgiven them, is that he won't do it because he may believe they're cursed if they tour.

@@lawrenceflail3164 Lawrence….Helene here. I don’t know how much you’ve delved into Plants personality or history. I’ve gone pretty deep…books, interviews, podcasts. The reasons why Robert won’t reunite with Zeppelin are fairly straightforward in my opinion….with no, or very little subtext. 1) Plant worked with Page for about five years…reworking the Zeppelin songs and had a great time doing it. They wrote an album together and toured it. Robert felt , after that, that he and Jimmy were kinda “played out” as far as their ability to collaboratively write together. 2) they made up for the mediocre Live Aide and Atlantic Anniversary “reunions” by knocking its out of the park in 2007 at the O2. It was never going to get better than that night. Anything further might go down from there. 3) And this is the main reason I spoke about taking Robert’s personality into account : He is OBSESSIVE about always moving forward and not looking back to the past. He does this professionally and sometimes in his personal life. Ever since his son died…he has spoken of always being “on the move” as a coping mechanism…both literally and figuratively. He creates a band…collaborates….makes an album or two….tours…..then switches it up and moves on to a new challenge. He did it twice in the 80’s….twice in the 90’s….four or five times since 2,000. It’s helps keep him sane. Always moving forward….always challenging himself. Looking back is boring to him…he CAN’T STAND repetition. He’s said so many times. He doesn’t need the money. He doesn’t care about adulation and huge crowds anymore. He’s rather play to a 1,000 people with music that excites himself than to 20,000 by cashing in on past glories. He was much more excited by his collaboration with Alison Krauss in 2007-2009 than by the prospect of raking in huge amounts of money by doing a “Zeppelin” tour post O2. Being challenged by learning about a whole new genre (bluegrass) and learning to sing in tight harmonies was a gas for him. Zep was the past. It’s really that simple. Zeppelin stopped being “an affair of the heart” as Robert’s has said, after his son died. He appreciates the success it gave him which has allowed him the luxury of following his own musical passions wherever they have led for the rest of his life. Jimmy stayed devoted to Zeppelin. It was his creation after all. It is one of music’s greatest ironies and tragedies that, through his (and Grants) deep addiction to heroin, they did more damage to the band 1975-80 than any outside force… Lastly….and as a practical note…..Robert flirted with disaster to his voice for decades. In 2007, he pulled it together for one glorious night. But he had to know that if they were to tour…he might damage his voice to such an extent that he would have to stop forever. He would never risk that because music and performing is what gives his life meaning. That and his family. So why would he risk it all for a project that didn’t feed his soul? He did t need the money or adulation anymore. It didn’t mean anything to him. So he walked away. You dont have to dig into “curses” or subtext with Jimmy. It’s all there in the character of the man that is Robert Plant.

I stood in line for 18 hours at the Dallas County Convention Center to get tickets for this tour. We were within 20 people of the ticket window and they closed the blinds and hung the Sold Out sign. We got Queen/Thin Lizzy tickets instead, a great show but not Led Zeppelin.

Well that was cleaned up and edited alot after the fact . If you listen to the Raw version the playing wi not so great. The Cleaned up edited audio done in 2002 fixed up alot of issues with pages playing. On the pre Production raw version page sounds like he choking a turkey and strangling a cat and his guitar tone is horrible page is my favorite guitar player but he was a man in serious decline by 79 and it took alot of work by engineer Keven Shriley to make it sound like it does hear . They also have plants vocals mixed lower on this cleaned up version where on the raw tapes his voice is much more forward in the mix and his voice is very raspy with alot of choked off notes which is covered up here with the new mix but on the downside his voice sounds much thinner on this mix . On the raw tapes his voice is much fuller and bigger but it's very dry and raspy and the staining on the high notes is much more obvious. The warm up gigs they played in Copenhagen on July 23rd and 24th for the kebworth shows are actually much better shows then either Knebworth show. The July 24th show is one of the best shows they played after 1973. The knebworth shows actually sound like the warmup gigs .

Maybe so. But he's clean for decades now, and his musical contributions to the world are vast, and will far outlive my time or your time on this earth. 150 years from now, people will still be listening to his music...what will the world take from you in 150 years?

@@antarcticorb9197 Really?? From the rain?? How come Plant's shirt wasn't soaked?? Or Bonham or JPJ?? Also look at how skinny Page was in that concert. Skinny as a rail. The sweating was definitely from the heroin use. By 1978-79 Page was sloppy as sh!t. Listen to Page in '69 versus 79 there is a gigantic difference in his guitar playing. But Zep will always be my favorite group so it really doesn't matter 40+ years later..

Must admit I find it hard to listen to the O2 concert. Without John Bonham it just doesn't seem like Led Zeppelin to me. If anything this performance demonstrates why the band decided to call it quits after Bonzo's death.
