Answering your question, these are commonly known stories and legends, and most of society knows these well. Twardowsky was discussed in primary school for example. Baba Yaga was a fairytale used to scare kids by the older generation. I would say, if somebody in Poland wouldn't know this, most people would assume that this person has lived under a rock or is illiterate.
@paulinarapicka Жыл бұрын
Baba Yaga is used to scare children not to enter the woods on their own. All those stories were told to me by my parents and grandparents, as a "goodnight story", or I watched/read about them at a young age. I remember my fav bedtime story was "Smok Wawelski" (somewhat represented by "Smok" by Allegro), and I always wanted to hear only it, when asked by my dad what bedtime story I wanted.

One important thing that isn't explicitly mentioned in the movie is that Perun is slavic god of thunder, one of the strongest slavic gods.
@niktniewiem4785 Жыл бұрын
The strongest. Boruta here is in fact Weles form slavic mythology. The main at first ally and then opponent of Perun. Their constant fight explained the world cycle of death and rebirth materialised by the seasons and day/night cycle. In the mythology tho, Perun was the one who always won and imprisoned Weles in the underground over and over again.
@MaciejBogdanStepien Жыл бұрын
Not a god of thunder but the thunder itself; not one that wields this "thingy," but the destruction itselfL the shock, the hit, the carnage; the disastrous outcome. Not a "God of Thunder" but a thunder itself. That's what Perun was.
@tamashii6670 Жыл бұрын
@@niktniewiem4785Weles was much more, he wasn't really bad, he wasn't devil or something like thay. He also helped people a lot in life and after life, souls were safe and didn't became demons because Weles guarded them. He was not only god of underworld and death, but also guardian of souls, cattle, harvest, he gave people gifts (December 6th) and many others. Unfortunately christians made him only devil, only negative traits... Slavic mithology is much more complicated. And, to be correct, in that war between day and night etc., it's Weles and Swaróg, god of heaven. There are records about Czarnobóg and Białobóg, but second name was probably formed by christians who didn't understand slavic beliefs and because of first name, they create second. But these two gods were fighting when they were creating world, but after that they cooperated many times, Swaróg was stronger, so he was god of heaven, and Weles was god of underground. But yeah, there was legend about battle between Perun and Weles' embodiment called Żmij, it was huge snake/dragon, many of Perun's duties were given to st. George, who was fighting with dragon, is it coincidence? So no, Perun wasn't strongest, Swaróg was, but in all religions with more than one god, some older gods are less revered than younger, newer gods, the same was here, Perun was newer god in slavic mithology than Swaróg. In times of christianisation Slavs had three main gods, Perun, Weles and Mokosz, that's why christian god is in three forms here, it was different on russian lands, there were two main gods. And, I don't think so that devil in this series is Weles, it's just christian devil, nothing more, nothing less. ;)

Jaga in Slavic mythology was also known as a witch, a Forest(Nature) Protector and the one that innitiates the change from child into an adult. As those changes also personified "death" - the end of one stage of life to the beginning of other, it was used by Grimm brothers to paint Jaga as an awful witch that eats children. Perun is a Slavic God of Thunder- an equivalent of Zeus and Boruta was right to be worried as noone wanted to be touched by his wrath.

The Yaga film is a consequence of what Twardowsky did in the second part when he gained access to Boruta's computer. By deleting files, he removed many of the protections and took the opportunity to escape. During communism, until the end of the 80s, we had poor films due to the low budget for cinematography and the habit of employing actors who supported the communist party, i.e. any communist with connections could be an actor. We had many good actors, but their work was limited to the theater. That is why, after the fall of communism, we had a flood of actors who graduated from traditional acting schools and who could play at a very high level. For a long time, acting schools were popular, but recently it is changing and just like in the west, anyone who does not have talent but with a little luck, connections or stubbornness can become a celebrity actor or other type of star. Currently, the quality of pop culture is low and pearls such as "legends" are rare, and we probably won't see good cinematography again unless… Baba Yaga turns our world upside down and we build it anew.

Baba Yaga is pan-slavic folklore. Eda from Owl Hat is inspired by her, Cockatrice (Basilisk) is also common representative fantasy bestiary. Witcher series did a lot to popularize many aspects of slavic folklore. Though technically Witches, Werewolves and Vampires are staples of Horror (what is largely inspired by Slavic folklore, including Monster from Lagoon aka Vodyanoy). Twardowski is only less known legend worldwide, but Poles joke that "Poland can't to space" because of him. It is quite shame that series was so short. From top of my head they should also do Sleeping Warriors and Bies'es.

You see my friend, our Slavic mythology, our old beliefs and part of our traditions were destroyed and replaced by Christianity (the SWAT analogy to the expansion and aggression of Christianity in this video is perfect). Many of our people do not know how much we have in common with the northern peoples (the Vikings, Goths and Varangians for example). It deprived us of some of our identity and also weakened us. However, this is changing, many Poles are looking for our foundations, our roots and our old faith, it will slowly (to some extent) replace Christianity, because we will realize that this is our power. The same goes for you... Scots.

The song was composed by the Polish musician and performer Stan Borys and the cover performer is one of the most underrated Polish singers of the younger generation. I recommend and greetings from Szczecin, Poland.

There are also music videos from Allegro that give even more lore context, might consider reacting to those too

As you know Allegro unfortunately didn't finish "Legendy Polskie" series. Hopefully, some day someone would appear brave and rich enough to continue this work. But there are still few gems in this universum left. I would like to recommend you one of my favourites: "cichosza". It is a cover of "Cichosza" by Grzegorz Turnau from 1993. Please, listen to the original (which is really nice and interesting song), and then try this one done by Allegro: "Cichosza - Cover. Marcin Macuk & Krzysztof Zalewski. Legendy Polskie" I'm really looking forward to you reacting to these and comparing them 😊 Enjoy and have a fantastic day! ♥

our Yaga like a ninja. In the European tradition, there is a well-known figure of an old woman called Baba Yaga in fairy tales. In Polish Legends, Yaga is young and very sensitive to changes in the world.

We all feel your pain in Poland, there is lot of fans of these mini productions. Unfortunately investors were not found. These series were produced as promotion of Allegro (ebay equivallent).. Maybe one day.. They are deeply rooted in old Polish/Slavic mythology which most of pre-internet generation are well aware off. My favourite is the one about Twardovsky (with modern one actually on the moon by spaceship)

Baba Jaga is old tale in Poland, but the way she is presented here also follows polish and overall slavic folklore of Spring as a goddess that is responsible for life reborn after Winter. This was before christianity possibly one of the most important aspect of slavic religion because Spring defeats death and reborn all life and she was worshipped. It was adopted by christianity as Eastern. Spring is believed to be the force of nature or just Nature. Perun is old slavic god of Earth and everything above water. Piorun is modern polish term for thunder. which derives from Perun. He is similar to Zeus or even more as Thor in other cultures. The opposite to Perun is Weles - god of underwold and water. Tale says they met on the sea - Perun floating in boat and Weles emerged from the sea. They created landmass from the sand of the bottom of the sea with the assistance of Weles who bring it from the bottom to Perun. Weles tried to trick Perun and wanted to rule the land but he was unable to bring it from the bottom of the sea in his name - as it was dispersed by water before he reached the top. After many attempts he brought the land from the bottom of the sea in Peruns name and succeeded. Perun managed from single part of sand to multiply it and create landmass. Weles wanted to rule the land as well as sea and tried to take it from Perun by force and long fight emerged during which both assembled deamons which during the eternal fight created clouds and Moon. Perun created Eagle and Weles a Snake. They fought until Weles had to run back to sea and Perun ensnared the snake with Tree of Life roots. Weles becomes god of underwold, sea and death and is cunning. Perun rules earth, land, skies or heaven and thunders and is associated with force and power. Snake tries to escape which casues from time to time earth to crack open and then Perun strike Earth with Thunder to calm the Snake. Fragile peace was achieved.

This series was the best thing that polish cinematography made within last decade or even two. So sad they discontinued this.

If you want to know more about those characters, check music videos from allegro, like Aleja Gwiazd. There you will get background for some of them.
