Mert, Martin Short and Eugene Levy met at McMaster University where they became great friends. They decided to try out for 'Godspell' which was launching a production in Toronto in 1972. In that production was Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Paul Shaffer, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas, Jayne Eatwood , and Nancy Dolman who became Martin's wife after he dated Gilda Radner. I was lucky enough to be in that audience as a young teenager. That cast then went on to be part of Second City improv comedy club when it opened in Toronto in 1973. The first club opened in Chicago in 1959 (Chicago is called the Second City as a dig by New Yorker's). The Toronto cast included other Canadian comics like John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Mike Meyers, Robin Duke, Rick Moranis, Dan Akroyd, and American comedians Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis and others. From that Toronto cast came the Canadian produced, brilliantly funny, SCTV (Second City Television) that ran for eight years. Lorne Michaels, another Canadian, was the creative force behind Saturday Night Live (NY)- and took many of the Canadian comedians from SCTV to appear on SNL. I went to every Second City Toronto production a few times a year along with visits to Yuk Yuk's, a stand up comedy club in Toronto where Jim Carrey, Norm McDonald, Russell Peters etc appeared, and saw all these guys when they were starting out. Many of Martin Short's characters, such as Ed Grimley, were created back in those early days of Second City. I love all these guys so much, and it's hard to have a favourite as they are all so talented - and they are all still good friends, hanging out with each other at their cottages in the Muskoka's. Just to add to the history, we have the largest international comedy festival in Montreal called 'Just for Laughs' that started in 1983, along with a television show of the same name. Sadly, 'Just for Laughs' is cancelled for 2024 while the company tries to recoup after financial issues after Covid.

@@singtweetypie Thanks much for the historical background on some of Canada’s greatest comedians. Some of it I knew but you added some great information. Enjoyed reading it. Makes me think of my Dad who loved comedians. I remember him making my sister and I watch Ed Sullivan whenever his favourites were on, Wayne and Shuster. 👏👏🥰
@singtweetypieАй бұрын
@@Lakeshore14 Thank you so much. We also watched Ed Sullivan and the Dean Martin Show as they were my dad's favourites shows as well - and he also liked comedians. Wayne and Shuster were very clever, and Ed loved them. I always followed the careers of all those comedians I saw so early on. Coincidentally, my eldest sister was a singer in the band 'Jason' which Steve and Morag Smith started before they went on to produce the ' Smith and Smith' TV show and then Steve went on to produce the 'Red Green Show'. My sister was a very talented singer, and even then, Steve and Morag were doing comedy bits on stage which was very different for a band during those times. I'm glad Steve had such success with his career, as he is such a lovely man. Here's a bit of trivia for you:. Andrea Martin was/is a sister in law to Martin Short, and they are aunt/uncle to each other's children. Andrea married Bob Dolman, brother of Nancy Dolman - Marty's wife's .They have since divorced.
@singtweetypieАй бұрын
@@HRHDMKYT No I haven't, but appreciate the recommendation. Martin is such a clever man, so bright, that I totally expect his book would be brilliant. My daughters and I watched these movies so many times and know every joke. I just love the guy and was heartbroken for him that he lost his wife so early on.

If you want to see who Martin Short is, there is an interview with Kathy Lee Gifford that speaks volumes. Kathy Lee has had a near constant run of fluffy, feel good daytime talk shows forever- live tv for housewives and shut ins . Around 2012 Martin was a guest on the show and Kathy brought up his wife, the fact that they’d been married so long, how lovely she was and how much they were still in love. What she didn’t know was that his wife Nancy had died 18 months previously, from terrible cancer. You can possibly sense some surprise for a split second, but he immediately goes along with it, and doesn’t let her know until the commercial break. For someone referred to as the 'scourge of talk show hosts' this was a very instantaneous act of kindness. He didn’t want to embarrass a host and didn’t want to bring down an audience or derail the show. You can see that it was more than just professionalism, his instant reaction was to save the host.

Something just clicked with Martin & I, and immediately fell into perfect ad lib rhythm during the commercial breaks. While the host, Patrick, and the other guest contestant were cracking up laughing; we just continued to play off each other faster and faster while the others couldn't stop laughing. We went all the way into the 'Back From Commercial' countdown, all the way until the count reach 3 [5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Back Recording], and timed it perfectly to both simultaneously look very calm, serious, and utterly confused at what all the others were laughing about. I always loved improv and adlibbing, so getting that chance early on when I was still in my teens to play off of a true improv artist of his caliber was so much fun.

At the beginning of every Letterman (and later Conan) appearance he would make a joke about the way Dave looked. These were all written before hand. In fact the guests on talk shows usually went over the topics in pre-interviews with segment producers. There's nothing worse than a talk show guest with nothing to say. One guy who didn't go by that formula was Craig Ferguson, who would rip up the cards of topics at the beginning of interviews. See his interviews with Ricky Gervais and Robin Williams. Another thing that Short would do on Letterman's show is sing musical numbers written for specific occasions.
