Paul Carrack was the singer of this song. The Mike in the band title is Mike Rutherford, formerly with the band Genesis which included Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. Mike is the guitar player and appeared in the video with the boy whom I believe is his son.

The song was inspired by Mike Rutherford and B.A. Robertson realizing their fathers had died around the same time, and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young, as well.

So true these words. I lost my father too early and I wish I had told him so many things, but then it was too late. My mum passed away last month of July, after o long period suffering from two debilitating and painful illnesses. I gradually learned to say to her a lot of things, even when she could no longer understand what I was saying. The little I know, Mike lost his father without having the opportunity to say the really important things in a relationship. Thank you Sabina, take care.

Everyone responds emotionally to this song . So after hearing this song for the first time and having a tearful emotional reaction to it how many people called or wrote a letter - reached out to that person (a parent, a brother or a sister, even an ex-spouse, a son, a daughter...) in order to try to reconnect or to simply apologize or to simply tell them that you've missed them.

Beautiful song describing the regrets of falling out with your father…I think this was about Mike Rutherfords (bass player) falling out with his father..but I may be wrong on this. One of my favourite songs from this Genesis hybrid band.

As the group GENESIS was dwindling down to its final 3 members (Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins) in the 80's they all tried their hand at going solo. Tony Banks didn't chart. Phil Collins became a mega solo artist Mike Rutherford started Mike + The Mechanics. They have as of 2019 produced 9 albums. "Living Years" has a preachy feel. Song you may hear in a Christian Mega church.

About the location, there is a Wiki page of this song: "The music video was directed by Tim Broad and premiered in January 1989. It was filmed in October 1988 in West Somerset, England, near Porlock Weir and the hamlet of Culbone.[7] The video features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom. It also includes an appearance by actress Maggie Jones, best known for playing Blanche Hunt in the soap opera Coronation Street.[8]"

Mike Rutherford is a Prog Rock God having been an original member bass player and guitarist of Genesis since the late 1960s. He co-wrote many of their brilliant progressive rock songs during the 1970s along with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett and Tony Banks. Of course in the 1980s when they went more commercial. Paul Carrack is brilliant on the vocals here, and Mike managed to keep Mike and The Mechanics going while still being a member of Genesis. This is a great meaningful song with wonderful melody and lyrics.

It is funny that having watched this video and reactions so many times...I still can't help but tearing up (not to mention the first 100+ weeping episodes). An interesting note, it wasn't until one of the more brilliant reactionists (is that a word?) mentioned the age of the chorus changed and the possible reasons why? That blew my mind...WOW, years of the video and it struck me...both ages have things to say, but, dynamics/traditions/life make them hold their tongues. Anyways, this is a GREAT song and has to be in every hit list. ;-) All the best. Cheers.
