Music itself has so many components that tie into it. a progression that has been going on for ages, but keeps going on, evolving, always changing, but never changing its fundamentals. Pride, Joy, Doom and Despair, all in one. A bit of a surreal song that draws you in and pushes you away at the same time. the casual and polite tone of the devil, that leaves no doubt that manners don't mean weakness. The feeling that you are not in danger right now, but the wrong move could change that. Like the predator roaming around. Just all ties together perfectly. Music, lyrics, tone, progression. It just all fits and seems to do this with a purpose.

There's a commonality between “Sympathy…” and that music, even if it is more proper to say the song is inspired by the Afro-Latin dance music from Cuba. Whatever it might be, that hybridity was quite subversive! (Not to mention, Keef specifically called it samba.)

This song saved my life. How? On the 5th of February 2002, I was 32 and cycling to work and was hit by a van at 60 MPH. I was punched off my bike across the road and into a barbed wire fence. I had massive spinal and nerve damage and a whole bunch more but I was alive. Okay, I have been left in chronic pain every second all due to an idiot speeding and driving badly but it's better than being dead. The doctors were amazed when they saw the speed recorded when I was struck and worked out I only survived because I was relaxed and listening to music. If I had heard the van approaching and tensed up well who knows what should have happened but I am sure it would be much worse. The song that was playing was the song ' Sympathy for the Devil', so I say this song saved my life... I am glad you're enjoying these amazing classic rock songs. It's clear you have many interesting viewpoints and your videos are always fun, milady!

I was happily waiting for the excited "babbling" that makes you one of the the best reactors out there. ♥ In just a few short years, The Rolling Stones went from a great singles band to one of the best creative forces Rock had ever known. My apologies to Brian Jones, but they really came into their own when his addictions and insecurities took him out of the picture. The bass, the percussion, that hard-biting guitar solo, and Nicky Hopkins driving the rhythm with that piano work! That something as simple as "woo-woo" could also help make the song even better is testament to how open the band was to new ideas. And those lyrics! Some people finger point at others. "You and me" is the message. The very final lyrics make it even clearer . . . "tell you one time, your're to blame." Seen the Stones three (maybe four?) times. Always a great show. Last time was in Paris two years ago. My 70th birthday gift from my two grown sons and their wives who showed up in Paris unexpectedly. So, a big family outing, lol. My wife, who never cared for the Stones, was jumping and dancing the most. Sympathy is my fav song of theirs. This is a bit earlier song but Love the Stones during their Mick Taylor (on lead guitar) phase. The best live version, in my opinion, is on Get Your Ya Ya's Out. Richards and Taylor exchanging searing guitar solos. Sublime

Hi Aileen 😊 Absolutely brilliant reaction and analysis to The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" 😊👍 You absolutely get it here in 2024 of a song that came out in the 60s... As you have with the other two songs that you have reacted and analyzed to "Painted Black" and "Gimme Shelter". It's very interesting on the outro with the selections of the songs to play next you have on your channel "Gimme Shelter" and your Pink Floyd playlist as the algorithm. These two bands are very thought-provoking and please, please, please keep talking as we and I love your words so very much and your thought processes. I am so glad you have again chosen the lyrics version so you can see the words and see how the instrumentals are tied together and you spoke of this very beautifully in your analysis. Flip Wilson had a line in his comedy routine..."the devil made me do it". This became a tagline for a complete generation and maybe even more going forward to blame someone else for our troubles or our actions or our choices. You dissected this perfectly in your analysis of yeah the devil may have planted the seed but we have the choice to reject. In reading the book "The Sleepwalkers" about the events that led up to World War One. I kept saying to myself what's driving these people and why aren't they stopping. I can say the same thing for today as you're looking at the events unfolding to possibly lead to World War 3. Yes, in a spiritual sense Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub, the devil... whichever name you want to tag him with is bent on the destruction of mankind because it is in his nature to do so. Again I want to applaud you for spending the time to discuss analytically the meaning of the song, the breakdown of the lyrics and the instrumentals to complete the whole thought that they intended. The process of completing a song is a laborious one that involves discussions and decisions which are formulated from a thought whether that thought be instrumental or lyrical. This is one of my 5 desert island songs. I must have this song available at any time because it's that good. It wasn't originally supposed to have the tempo it did, but they came up with it in the studio. Also, Keith played bass as well as guitar on this song. This tune is special to me because I remember as a kid being out for errands with my old man. We were at a Dunkins and this song was on. And the part where Mick says "get down", he was like listen for the lower notes. And that was the first time I heard bass separately in a song and the first time I started listening for specific instruments,etc. No joke, it changed my life and inspired me to pick up a guitar.

@@vicprovost2561 I’ll reluctantly agree re the Beatles. They just had way too many silly songs for my taste. Of course, they weren’t a band long enough to see what direction they may have gone. The Stones just exuded so much attitude and weren’t afraid to push the envelope with lyrics, which to me is quintessential rock and roll. My top three are easy: Stones, Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Four and five can come and go, but for now I’ll say Free/Bad Co (counting them as one), and Allman Brothers.

One of the few Stones songs with a prominent piano line. They released their first album in 1964 and they released the latest one year ago in October. That's FIFTY NINE YEARS apart!! This is my favorite Rolling Stones song. Im so happy you reacted to it. The bassline is SO much fun to play. On a side note, Im about to go off topic and genre, but I wanted to recommend any live performance, or the album version, of the song "Colors" by the Black Pumas. The lives hit harder though. They're a current band 50 years too late unfortunately. Their style is 70's soul music. I feel like you'd enjoy this song immensely. You've reacted to 2 of my all time top 10 favorite songs recently (this, and Southbound Pachyderm). I can't help but think Black Pumas will take your souls hand and dance with you.
