That is a very well reasoned argument for how Cookie came about and I have to agree. It's definitely been "lost in translation". As for NewJeans themselves, I am totally here for them. Love the music, they are sweet and so talented. Look forward to what they do next. 🙂

I love Attention. Honestly, I'll be working and all of a sudden I will start singing the chorus. It is so catchy and definitely has a 2000's feel about it. Hybe Boy is good as well it's also catchy. There are multiple videos and has different storylines for the girl's. Nothing too complicated but I do think it's cute showing infatuation and how someone can make you feel. Lyrics are average but it is still a catchy song. Hurt shows off their vocals the most and again this song will pop into my head because I think I can sing and end up scaring my dogs while trying to sing. Now for Cookie... I've been reading a lot of comments and it looks like the English translation makes the song sound suggestive than it actually is. Which is very unfortunate because Cookie, again, is a catchy song. Now with this translation that we do have if...Sistar was still around I would love this song. If it was mamamoo-afied I would also love it. Grown and sexy women talking about grown and sexy things. But due to the translation or misinterpretation of the lyrics it seems like a very suggestive song for very young girls. And I'm trying to be nobody's big sister or nobody's auntie but damn: I'm just like why did this happen? How did no one realize this would happen? I understand dufferent cultures and how nicknamed for things are different or unknown but dammit why??? Unfortunately, Cookie is a catchy song but I just feel weird when listening to it so I usually skip it. With all of that out of the way, I really do enjoy their music and that they already have a style which is definitely different from the other 4th Gen. group's. As far as the taking the 2000 inspiration not just with the style but also with their music. At least to me.

Regarding "Cookie", I like your perspective. There are slang terms in American English that don't exist in other English speaking countries, and vice versa. The word "f@nny" (censored for our British friends) is nothing in America, but if an American artist performed a song using that word, it would raise some controversy in Britain. I just watched a video of New Jeans songs from another reactor (yes, I cheated on you lol), this reactor is not only native Korean, but also a kpop girl group member (from Crayon Pop). When she reacted to "Cookie", she made absolutely no mention of any controversial lyrics. It was as if she had no idea the lyrics could be taken that way. As a matter of fact, something she said while watching it in response to the lyrics was equally as much an innuendo as the lyrics in question, and clearly she means no harm by it. And you'd think that someone who has actually been in the business that these girls are in would want to look out for them. That video lends support to your thoughts that it was a big "Whoops!".

[Long message ahead about my theory] I do think HYBE knows everything whats going on here. Cuz, i do think it was meant for drama because of you would look at the ssera's mv for fearless that one scene which was controversial was intentional and i do think they would not perform this part of the dance at all not unless they are legally on the right age to do so. So, in this case, knowing that hyhe are all knowledgeable and has been a long history in going in and out in america and having multiple connections with western artists and medias. I do think this is all intentional and i know for sure they wouldn't perform this at all live in US, same as what's in ssera's case with that dance and so yeah they'll perform this when they're age appropriate. So yea, this is just my theory with young idols in hybe. Because if you will see niki was also so young when he debuted but if you will see their discography like fever, flicker etc. they are songs that should be performed age appropriately but none of this became an issue cus they're boys? I dont really but yeah this are just hybe tricks on their sleeves to blow up in medias and know and talk about their groups. In conclusion, this is just my opinion and if you will ask if i like the structure of this promotion is YES i really do. They're crazy for this and I love it breaking all the norms.

I agree with everything you said pretty much, I could also be on the 'at least 16' train but the way I see it is like... if it's younger like in the case of Hyein, as long as the company talks with the parents, with Hyein herself and they agree and she feels ready enough to make that big step then it can be ok, as long as like you said they still allow her to be a teenager and live her life as one. I don't quite think it will ever get worse I guess? Like, it would do more harm than good to a company so I don't see it get worse, maybe I'll be wrong but hopefully not. I also agree on Cookie, it's ok to raise an eyebrow at first but once you find out that Koreans don't use or have innuendos in their language and the song is meant to be a cute/fun way to promote their debut with the CD and stuff, why bother to still speak up about it, right? Don't think we'll ever get an official statement about it from ADOR so all we can do right now is just chill, know that the song was NOT meant to be provocative in any way, and wait for their next comeback and see how things are from there!

I agree with your thought process on what happened with Cookie lyrics. Boy With Luv was originally an English song about a one night stand ( or something along those lines, the original songwriter talked about how cool it was that this song about one thing and changed completely into something else). 0x1= Lovesong original lyrics by Mod Sun were also pretty different, we hear them in the Mod Sun version of Lovesong. It is so common place for these companies to pick up songs and rewrite lyrics to fit what they want the song to say. Ador just did a poor job of rewriting lyrics, and unfortunately did so on a song with so much innuendo and didn't change the lyrics enough. I just hope they learned their lesson and pay more attention to the lyrics of the songs they pick up so they know what to change in the future.

I've said this in another comment but the thing about New Jeans inappropriateness issue, the problem is not the producers but the viewers. I saw Jessi reacting to them and she is quite known for being open, bold and her very adult comments. And what I noticed was that she has never brought it up for the group which shows her decency and respect. Why would people, grown adults at that, correlate seggsual things to minors. The problem is them. That wasn't the message the producers intended nor what the group, as minors, expresses 💁🏻‍♀️ where did it go wrong then? Isn't it in the people who went "oh they're minors, they're DEFINITELY singing about their kittens"

An alternative view of the Cookie controversy. IU got into trouble with overseas critics for her 2018 song 'Zeze' for sexualizing a minor, and the reply was 'You westerners are reading inuendo where there is none." (she sang 'climb up me and pluck my flower') IU also has the song 'Jam Jam' that's overtly food metaphors for sex. So the K-pop industry is trying to have it both ways, being cheeky and naughty while denying that they're doing it.

I think at this point anyone that still feels highly uncomfortable about Cookie (enough where it makes it difficult to enjoy their other songs) is probably viewed as a downer even by those who agree. I think I'm more frustrated that yet again outrage over an important issue gets me invested and then the majority of people just move along to the next thing lol. I'm not judging anyone who is able to enjoy their non-problematic songs, I really wish I could and I'm upset that I can't enjoy them as much as I would have without the controversy. Even if it's all a misunderstanding, I still think they should've made moves by now to correct the English lyrics somehow just so those of us still weirded out can fully enjoy their music. I'm hoping it all continues to blow over and eventually I can just enjoy their music without feeling like I'm maybe glossing over an actual problem just to enjoy great songs. I think the main thing still on my mind about it is that I've seen too many Koreans fluent in English now talk about what a genius MHJ is in the same breath as admitting the English lyrics are sus. I know it's not nearly as bad, but it reminds me too much of people that defend Woody Allen and Roman Polanski because they enjoy their movies... or this situation really isn't that far off from the inappropriate ad with Brooke Shields, which apparently has inspired MHJ even if in just an artistic way. It also didn't help that I watched the vid of NewJeans serving a cafe and I couldn't help but notice several grown ass men up front when they showed the crowd with blurred faces. People of all ages should be able to enjoy whatever music they want without worries, I'm an older fan myself which maybe adds to me feeling super uncomfortable knowing so much about a bunch of teens, but I wish I wasn't noticing this kind of stuff now.
