True, but it's still a colaborative process when they peace their songs together, everyone gives imput and refines his/her part in the song. This is obvious if you just compare Ghost Love Story of Tarja to the one of Floor. Every member does it's part of a song his or her way.

Something I've often wondered about, is how involved/how much of the symphony writing is directly from Tuomos vs. Pip Williams? I'm just curious how that works. Does Tuomos hand symphonic scores to Pip Williams and just have him edit/refine them, or does Tuomos mostly write the parts that the band plays and lets Pip write the accompanying symphonic parts?

Tuomas stands in rarified air among composers, the band are tireless servants to music and all leave ego behind when working. The variety of NW is incredible. Tuomas is inspired by movie scores, he draws heavily on the work of Hans Zimmer. The unique aspect of symphonic metal composition is that every sound and instrument has a place, nothing is off the table. Other metal with extraordinary composition: Wintersun 'Sons of Winter and Stars' live studio playthrough Opeth 'Ghost of Perdition' live at Red Rocks Dimmu Borgir 'Mourning Palace' from The Forces of the Northern Night dvd

Do Song of Myself next. Then maybe Ghost River and Last Ride of the Day from Wacken. Poet, I think needs to be done later on having seen a few more songs. The Wembley and Tampere shows are different in style to Wacken. Maybe do The Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere and Shudder Before the Beautiful from Wembley. At the minimum do Poet and the Pendulum when you have seen something from the other two shows. Then, research the lyrics and meaning behind it before watching.

This might be not needed for it has already said, but I would say without the prior research for lyrics you can get maximum of 50% out of those songs. Most of the NW songs have multilayer meanings in lyrics and some songs are just "nice" if you not know the history of band or the things they like science, history eri. And the latest album Human ll Nature... it needs to be listened in the order it is on album..sure every song is its own masterpiece, but (again) they form a timeline, a story as a whole. And especially Shoemaker needs prior research which will clarify the lyrics. Cheers man, you are doing fine reaction videos, like how you analyse things

I love that they love what they are doing.. This concert, the Wembley Arena show, Tempere, Buenos Aires, etc.. You'll eventually move on to those shows to get a picture of their evolution in Tuomas's song writing.. You have probably heard that Floor is not the original lead singer for Nightwish.. She joined the band mid world tour, like 8 months before this Waken 2013 show. Annette their second singer could not continue so she quit. Floor's current band at that time was inactive so Toumas's first call was to her, she flew out and took over. When she got there she had 48 hours to learn the set list in preparation for Nightwish's next show.. Anyway the point is, Toumas writes songs to match the singers abilities, so none of these songs were written for Floor. She just does a spectacular job of performing and putting her stamp on, these songs weather it was originally a Tarjia or Annette song.

Wintersun is another (Finnish) metal band that never disappoints. The complexity and technicality of their songs is insane! Best Metal band of the world in my opinion, but if you jump right into it with no metal background it can easily be too overwhelming and become a wall of noise. Their music is so complex that you need to have trained ears so to speak but then its an explosion of emotions and quality of sound. Also it's worth to listen to Ensiferum where Jari was singer on the first two albums (Treacherous Gods from their debut is my absolute favorite), he was already good back then but his voice developed incredible from there to Forest seasons (Loneliness being a masterpiece).

@@ChaseCarneson I'm not sure if you're familiar with classical music, but if you're planning on doing a reaction on The Poet and the Pendulum, it might be interesting for you to see the similarities between Tuomas and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (1830). On second thought, it might be cool to look into after a first reaction. Berlioz attends his own execution and funeral in his symphony, so it's potentially even darker than Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum.

@@ChaseCarneson Be careful which live performances you pick. The newer Wacken is a valiant effort under horrible conditions, but not a first recommendation for new listeners. Also stay away from the Bloodstock concert with its bad audio mix. Next to the Wacken 2012 one, Wembley 2015 and Tampere 2015 (sometimes also given as 2016) are both great, and so is the more recent Decades tour stuff. Nightwish videos are not bad per se, and often visually interesting, but they have a more mainstream, poppy mix. Use them preferentially, though, if you ever want to check out their second singer, because singing live was ... not her main strength. For the first singer, the End of an Era live performances or the music videos are ok.

Nightwish uses a backtrack from an orchestra and a choir. So I don't think he uses his keyboard for the choir. The London Philharmonic Orchestra (the same one that did the music for Lord of the Rings) does the symphonic parts and Metro voices choir group and London's young musicians choir group do the choir vocals. And because of the back tracks, the band cannot make any mistakes. Like this band wasn't awesome enough already. I know. lol

I don't know if someone has mentioned it already but Floor is also a vocal coach on top of being in the metal scene for years now. Also, if you're interested in something simple but different. I strongly recommend The Islender, which is a song lead vocally by the bassist, Marco. Again, great reaction, love the attention to detail, keep it up!

Hey, watched all your videos but I'm coming late to the comment party. Absolutely love your analysis and deconstruction of all songs. I do love Nightwish, but they do have their fair share of "okay" songs (Elan, Amaranth, Alpenglow) that resonate as feelgood songs. Usually they are put in live performances after the longer, heavier, darker songs to relief some of the tension for both band and audience, I guess. I would really love to see you breaking down "Poet and the Pendulum" (the performance in the Wembley Arena 2015 would be perfect) and "Greatest Show on Earth" (performance in Tampere 2015).

I'm sure you'll get many NW recs. I'll say the live versions of Weak Fantasy and Yours is an Empty Hope. But I'd like to offer something different too. Some of which might fall outside your musical horizon, but I think you have a genuine appreciation for singing talent even though you're not a singer yourself. I think there is a strong case to be made for Floor being the best singer in rock/metal right now. You haven't seen half of what she can do yet. Last year she was on a reality tv show called Beste Zangers in her home country of Holland where singers perform for each other in a very small, intimate setting. She smashed all 6 or 7 of her performances even though none of them are her songs(just leave Phantom of the Opera for last!). Listen to her growl, shriek, and scream in ReVamp - Disdain (live at graspop). Listen to her transition from her chest voice, to head voice, to growling all in the same song in ReVamp - Wild Card (live). Listen to her sing straight up opera with O mio babbino caro. Listen to her sing with the Metropole Orchestra for a Final Fantasy video game in Sound of the Wind. Listen to her sing on the radio with her old band After Forever - Equally Destructive (semi accoustive live 2007). Or maybe listen to something much more recent, like the guitar/voice duet performances of Nemo and/or How's the Heart on Planet Rock. My point is that the woman is a force of nature and is basically the King Midas of singing. Do yourself a service and go listen, or better yet react! And it is quite a shame for Marco, the bassist, right? He is a great singer in his own right and he does sing solo from time to time. So unfortunate for him that he has to live in the shadow of the colossus, but Tuomas finds plenty of space for his voice as well!

I really really like the way you react and analyze, you pick up on special features in the songs, in a way that I appreciate the songs even more than I already did. I have been a fan of Floor for a long time and a nightwish fan. When they joined forces I was over the moon, still am. The songs I like most are The Poet and the Pendulum, the Greatest Show on Earth, the live versions and from there latest album Shoemaker, a song about Eugene Shoemaker, a man I admired a lot. Floor is one of the greatest vocalists in the world, there is 1 person in this world who impresses me more than Floor. His name is Dimash Kudaibergen, a young man born in Kazachstan, sings since he was 5 years old and he has a range from C3 (I think), all the way up to D8. I hope you can react to Dimash also some time, I think you should start with a song called S.O.S., than Opera 2 and Sinful Passion. I subscribed to your channel, I hope you keep reacting this way, thank you.

I always get a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean from Nightwish too, Check out Last Ride of the Day for more of the circus vibe (and epic Floor and Marko harmonizing). Also check out Song of Myself because everyone is amazing on that and it has so much dynamic range. If you want to hear Marko sing a folk song, The Islander (Live at Tampere). Floor sings backup on this one.

The band itself had been through difficult times losing 2 vocalists, Floor herself had been through difficult times losing her previous band due to health issues but the end of this tour headlining Wacken rejuvenated the entire band and the result is this tremendous concert. There are albums that succeed crossing any musical genre, this one has to be there as rock/metal fans should appreciate the genre playing and other fans simply for the professionalism and skill of the arrangements.

Just coming from your other two Nightwish videos. Gotta say, primo reactions my dude. Definitely keep them coming! As a few others have said, Poet and the Pendulum absolutely requires some background. And there is a video out there that is a copy of the Accepted Official Live version with Floor on the vocals, but with a lyric overlay. I really recommend that video with the lyrics. The VERY short version is that Floor is their third vocalist. Their first, Tarja, was also an amazing, classically trained operatic singer. Very good, but very different from Floor. There was a bad falling out with her and the rest of the band. Tuomas (pronounced Tu-oh-mas) took it very hard and went into a bad depression. This song was his coping mechanism during that time. The short version is that his depression was so bad, he writes about killing himself in the song so that he wouldn't have to for real. It is a song they do not play often, so when they do, it is a very special treat for the audience. There are 5 sections to the song, but it is an amazing piece of music. In the video, you see Marko (bass) and Emppu (guitar) occasionally going over to stand beside Tuomas in support. It's still a hard song for him to play. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3bdi4WDqc2bjrc I think you should still seek out a few other songs before tackling that one. You're already a fan of Marko's vocals, so I happily recommend The Islander, Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red, and Wish I Had an Angel. The first is really folky, almost tavern-songe-sque. The second is very much a ballad, while the last is the "classic" sound of Nightwish. Symphonic metal with fantastic contrasting vocals between Tarja and Marko. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKCbn5aBlJqesMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4eagX6saZ5mf8U (Live version) --- kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ7MqGd8jrmaaLc (Official music video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXaog3l4fp6Yeck Any and all of these would be great videos to react to. You are absolutely spot on with your "horror comedy" comment. That album (Imaginaerum) has a lot of that vibe to it (especially Scaretale) and was accompanied by a Nightwish movie with the same title. So there is the tendency in Tuomas songwriting and composing which is influenced by movie scores (he actually wrote a score in his solo project for the the comic The Life and Times of Scrooge). Also in one of your other reactions to Nightwish you compared the structure of the songs to the ocean, which is quite interesting as Tuomas stated that he is quite influenced by the ocean and wanted to become a marine biologist when he was young, something which is also reflected in the title of their second album "Oceanborn" and you hear references to the ocean throughout all their album releases. If you want to have a glimpse of the old Nightwish "powermetal"-times I recommend "Stargazers" (opening track from their album Oceanborn) arranged for their current set-up at their Tampere show.

Also to experience the evolution of the band in terms of songwriting and composing in one shot I can recommend to listen to their first demo "Nightwish" (which gave the band their name and is released on the best-of album "Decades") and then to their absolute master piece "The Greatest Show on Earth" from Endless Forms Most Beautiful

While some people will say "oh this is cool", you are more like "this is 8th pace on the bass, but 7th on the voice". Makes you look more like an authority, and also helps me appreciate how much work the band put into this. Thank you for all of that, i feel a bit more educated now. I learn from your analysis things that I’ve never paid attention to, enjoying a subliminal experience as opposed to picking them out for further appreciation. When Floor sings I hear Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar and so many others besides herself and they all sound tinglingly delightful. I cannot discount Tuomas, Marco or the drummer(s) to say nothing of the others but am guilty of perpetually awaiting any glimpse or sound of her and don’t want to miss everything else. Definitely my favourite reactor so far - even the good ones just focus on vocals, so it's great to get a rounded analysis of the entire band and composition! As for recommendations - for Marco you've got his lead/solo vocal and guitar on The Islander live at Tampere, or their cover of High Hopes which is older. Phantom of the Opera, the Nightwish arrangement, live with Marco and original singer Tarja on vocals. No live versions of the new album tracks yet apart from an acoustic rendition of How's The Heart which is beautiful: Floor being tested with Tuomas' lyrics and multi-instrumentalist Celtic genius Troy on guitar. Well worth your time. Beyond Nightwish there's Floor's time on Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. It's a programme where a group of singers from different genres and backgrounds perform songs for each other just for the sheer love of music. Floor really showed what she can do. Personal favourites are her version of Shallow and doing Phantom with Henk Poort, who is a Dutch musical theatre legend who played the Phantom professionally. Greatest Show On Earth. Can't decide which version I like best. Tampere live has fireworks but the ending monologue is over the credits. Live at Wembley plays out the song in full and has a guest come out to read the end part to the audience. It's all about evolution, from the Big Bang through to now, with a bit of the evolution of music thrown in - Bach to Metallica - which most reactors miss completely. More Devin Townsend too ;) Bastard/Funeral/Death of Music live at the Royal Albert Hall if you've the time.

'Ghost River' is also an amazing Nightwish song, similar vein to Storytime. There's The Islander which is a beautiful ballad. The Live at Tempere version is stellar. And something from older Nightwish is their version of Phantom of The Opera. Dark Chest of Wonders is also a favourite. And how could I forget The Greatest Show on Earth. That one is an epic. If you ever plan on doing that one you're in for a good ride. As always. I enjoy these videos a ton.

Sometimes is very hard to say what exactly Tuomas is playing live. Usually when Nightwish records their album , they use London Symphony Orchestra, so it's understandable that they can't play with the whole orchestra on stage. They use prerecorded samples with some prerecorded back vocals from Floor and choirs. You know, as a musician, how hard is to play under a click. Btw, Tuomas said in an Q&A last week, that he wants to make one concert with a live orchestra and choir, because logistics and organization for a tour is a nightmare and impossible. Floor Jansen is a vocal goddess, she can sing almost every style, the most versatile singer in the world (I haven't heard her yodel or throat sing...yet). She used to be a vocal coach as well. Keep rocking 🤘

Also as for more recommendations I will throw out "Weak Fantasy" from the Tampere show. Also I'm not sure if anyone has told you but Floor was on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers 2019 last year. It is a cool format they get a group of popular singers from different genres and take them to a tropical paradise where they can hang out and get to know each other better during the day and then in the evening they get together and one of them is the "focus" that person does not perform that night and the others will sing a song for them. They usually sing a song that the focus wrote/performed or just one that has special meaning to them, I think everyone provided a list of songs before the show starts. If you want to see what Floor is capable of in a much more intimate setting I highly recommend it. I will say that the one of the many impressive things about it was that her first 4 songs were all in a different language (German, Dutch, English, Spanish).
