This is one of those amazing moments enabled by internet. I came to your channel because of Suede and suddenly you’re reacting to one of those songs that raised me… That amazing and extremely poetic -and certainly political- Silvio Rodriguez track took me to my childhood, my adored deceased mother and the whole magic of music…

What a fantastic reaction! I love that you guys took the time to find the translated lyrics and fully appreciate the songs. I love Silvio and Ojalá has a special place in my heart, but Madredeus was a lovely surprise for me - I had no idea what to expect but I really enjoyed this track and will definitely listen to more from them. I love the concept behind this series! If you ever need help translating from spanish, I'd be more than happy to contribute :)

Two beautiful tracks. Madredeus definitely checks some boxes for me - I've listened to more of their compositions recently and I hear the Penguin Cafe Orchestra (and Dead Can Dance) influence that Fran Garcia mentioned earlier. Thank you for the recommendations.

Just a small fun fact, don't know if this was already said but the word Oxalá from portuguese and Ojalá from Spanish comes from the Arabic word Inshallah and means more or less the same, in Arabic Inshallah means "if God wants" but Oxalá means "I hope that comes to pass" or "I hope so", so similar but not quite the same.

Ojala is one of my favorite songs! Loved the reaction and the story behind it. If you want a sugestion for another video (It amazes me how this songs have almost the same title) you could react to "El Boulevard De Los Sueños Rotos" de Joaquin Sabina VS "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" from Green Day, both are really iconic in their own way.

Excellent job guys. You did justice to two of the most acclaimed artists in their own countries and abroad. Ojalá by Silvio Rodríguez is a true classic in Latin America and Spain, so it's probably the right winner in this little game. I found interesting the connection with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Indeed they both cover the same subject. Regarding the instrumentation of Oxala, I believe they use 2 different acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, synthetic keyboard and voice. Magical.

You'll never be able to give an objective opinion on Madredeus, or even on Portuguese (and Brazilian) music, because you're incapable of feeling "Saudade". It's a feeling that only Portuguese and Brazilians can feel. And you could learn Portuguese and you'd never feel it. That's Madredeus, the power of his music and lyrics that make us feel "Saudades". And you'll probably die long before you manage to feel the breath of this feeling, as strong as love.

So,,,Silvio. Where to start. Rodriguez triggers me the way Richard Wagner does. He's not a guilty pleasure like Led Zeppelin, despicable people who make great derivative music who at the end of the day you can take or leave. No. Rodriguez is that horrendous person, like Wagner, who makes great art and makes you question your moral principles because you can't throw out the baby with the bath water. With that out of the way, wow, what a song. One that makes translation a silly exercise. Just like Shakespeare is best read and understood in English, Rodriguez here is best experienced in Spanish. Sometimes specifically Cuban Spanish. Funny enough, the best version I've heard of this song was a live performance in Argentina with Rodriguez backed by the vocal group Los Zupay. Rodriguez's soul, something sometimes I've doubted he has (is it obvious I dislike the guy?) comes out in live settings. His mastery of the guitar is more evident, and the natural thinness of his voice is strangely less noticeable. You should do "Óleo de Mujer Con Sombrero", Rodriguez's most devastating masterpiece.

Will check that one out and appreciate your comment. You raise the fantastic question of "can you enjoy someone's art if you can't stand them as a person"? I think that is an individual decision. I usually can.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics To be clear, just as Wagner's antisemitism doesn't diminish his accomplishments as a composer, Rodriguez's lack of personal conviction (his mortal sin in my eyes) doesn't invalidate his. And no, Rodriguez isn't in the same universe as Wagner in terms of ideological decrepitude. Rodriguez is also incredibly self-aware. In 'Yo Digo Que Las Estrellas", another one of his musical gems (he has a ton), he writes that pretentious people can't "grow beyond what they are worth". But he reserves particular scorn for those who lend themselves as "pawns of evil". Which is exactly what he has allowed himself to become.

Madredeus is on another level! Oxalá is probably the least good song of them. If you really want to get how good they are you have: O Pastor/ Haja o que Houver/ Vaca de Fogo/ Não Muito Distante/ Andorinha da Primavera...

I don't see the point in comparing both songs just because they have the same title? Madredeus is Avant Garde baroque. A style of its own, why does it need a 'song battle' with an artist from Cuba? Thumbs down this channel is insipid
