A little late to the party, but one of the things PTX does better than just about anyone else, is use dynamics in their arrangements. They know when to bring up the intensity, when to pull it back. When to go unison then break out to harmony. They aren't afraid to have moments of silence. They don't always have the wall of sound, but very often do. One of the best examples of that is "Imagine" The dissonance of the chord in this wall of sound, amplifies the angst of the song. And I add my second to "Pop Spring"!

"There are three things certain in life, death, taxes and the Pentatonix wall of sound" - love that! So true! I'm enjoying your well considered Pentatonix reactions. And we all like the Kirsty side smile! :) They do a really good job of lip syncing on their videos but they also don't record anything that they can't sing live. All their evolution videos are sung and recorded live in one take. They record them right through a few times and then keep the best take. You're talking about Popspring I think the 14-od minute live recording. That is really good. If you want shorter live recordings though, there are a few fan live recordings and others that are recorded live - try Aha live in Singapore, it's a fan recording and Avi (who regularly used to blow the speakers, with his low notes and I think did at this concert!) has some very low notes at the beginning and Mitch gives an incredible insane performance! Also Gold is very good and is their official video but recorded live.

The regular bass singer now for Pentatonix is Matt Sallee. When Matt is singing and you can still hear that deep bass line, that is when Scott Hoying, the baritone in the group, takes over the bass lines and does it seamlessly.

Pop Spring 2016 is amazing. I never get tired of watching and hearing it. The members of this group are all musical geniuses in their own right AND incredible performers also. There are three original songs in the Pop Spring set and each one is pure magic. The last song, Water, written by Kirsten is my favorite, but it is hard to pick a favorite. The video is about 15 minutes long, but structured in a way that you can break up each song, if needed. I like it when reactors watch it all the way through. Also, it is a great intro into their original music which I think is even better than their covers and often under appreciated. Even beyond that are their original songs that don't have official videos. Water is one of those. Their songs that don't have videos are absolute hidden treasures that most reactors don't pay attention to. Anchor, Ref, Never Gonna Cry Again, Petals, are just a few of many that don't have videos, but are so damn good and worthy of a reaction! Have you done any Superfruit reactions? A partnership with Scott and Mitch. Funny vlogs and songs, amazing vocals and collaborations. Another very deep and wonderful rabbit hole to jump in. Some of my Superfruit favorites are Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 & 2. Nicki Menage cover of Feeling Myself, Katie Perry cover of Rise, any of the Medely (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Empire and more), their Frozen Medley and Wicked (a Broadway song) and so many more. Hope you get a chance to jump into that rabbit hole, too! It is well worth it. Thank you for your wonderful and thoughtful reactions! So happy to subscribe to your channel.

We’re you taking about PopSpring 2016 as the 15 minute video? I hope so. I love it so much. Love your reaction and I agree completely about them singing while making the video (even though they don’t use the audio from the video shoot) other than their evolution of videos, those are all live, they do 3-4 takes and then pic the best one.

You mentioned them arranging. My favourite videos with a bit of insight on how they work are these: - The PTXperience Episode 5 Time To Arrange (PTXVlogs channel Vlog of them on tour in 2014 and arranging a song.) - [BEHIND THE SCENES] Can You Feel The Love Tonight? - Pentatonix (A part showing some arranging) -Pentatonix - The Recording of Evergreen (17 minute mini-doc from recording their latest album. They do some arranging and producing on the fly in that video) And yes, they all sing along when doing the video. Only way to get it to look right even if they clearly don't use that audio. And on the faces, many of us wondered how they got Matt to look that serious for so long. He's rarely without a smile.

@Badger77722

My understanding is that while the studio recording is playing while they are filming the video, they almost always are singing along with it so that all of their movements (mouth, lips, throat, etc.) are being performed with the same motions they would have been doing while the studio track was being recorded. It's a version of "lip-synching" that goes one step further, and I think most of the big a cappella groups use it when they aren't being recorded live.

Also, please react to "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" and the Behind The Scenes video for it. In the Behind The Scenes video there is a part showing them working on the arrangement backstage while on tour. You can get an idea of how they start the arranging process.

That wall of sound is a gobsmacking thing! I prefer this version because it addresses the gravity of the lyrics so much better. The original was too upbeat to fit for me. Maybe I wasn't discerning enough to realize the darkness back when Tears For Fears did it. Still, this is an "upgrade" to me. When Kirsten gives that smile when singing the lines of the dreams of dying being the best she's ever had. PERFECTION! Such an unexpected thing to show up. Thank you for reacting to this one. You talk about the expression on kirsty's face when she sings the line " isn't it a little funny, isn't it a little sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the very best I've ever had" I so identify with particularly because of the emotions she shows on her face. I'm not sure if you will see this after a month but I am getting ready to binge all of your ptx videos I missed. My dad has cancer and passed away and since ptx was something we shared it's been hard for me to do my favorite activity and watch reactions. Ptx dropped "I just called to say I love you" on my dad's last birthday October 22nd of last year so I was able to send it to him and share it with him. I love love love your reactions bc you talk about all of the very important things. Also kirstin, Mitch and Scott were all in musical theater together, so they from a young age could convey the emotions of a song. Kevin was classically trained so that explains his emotiveness. Matt is the most joy filled human I have ever seen but he also conveys his emotions to the song very easily as well. I think I'll watch popsprings next although I'm also going to see if you have done the making of evergreen bc that will answer most questions you have about their arranging and recording process.

The trio, Scott, Mitch and Kirstie all did musical theatre in highschool, which accounts for their ability to act out emotions in videos. I don't think Kevin ( beatboxer ) took classes like that since he was mostly focused on music and pre-med. Not too sure about Matt who did go to college for music.
@Badger77722
@Badger77722 2 жыл бұрын
Kevin has said that almost all of the music he was familiar with was classical, as that was what his parents listened to and what he was trained in, so he probably didn't have much in the way of "musical theater" training.

Matt, like The Trio, was involved in musical theater and choirs as a child and teen. He had his first lead in a play at 9 years old. Fun fact: Mitch and Kirstin were in that same play years apart and thousands of miles away from Matt. Small world, right?. Matt was in an a cappella group in high school and in college, he was part of the renowned college a cappella group Pitch Slapped.

Or... a clearly musical person who read the comments and have listened to a few of their wall of sound songs first. Whihc makes sense since those emotional big ones are usually the early ones recomended. And you can clearly tell the buildup to a wall of sound if you know musical composition at all.

I see you are new here. A couple of things to know. Musical structure for the most part is the same. Verse, Hook, Verse, Hook, Pre-Hook, Hook, End. Common music knowledge One minute into this video will tell you what you need to know. I said “Amazing Grace, but it was really “ Sound of Silence” and “Home”. You can clearly see these reactions and thier date posted in my playlist. If you haven’t watch it and or skip my commentary, not my problem. kzbin.info/www/bejne/apCnZYt9gqaWfM0 I have musical experience so expect me to understand things a lot better than your average reactor.
