That effect you talk about hearing the person on screen more than the others is truly a "brain trick" - when you are focused on one specific person, your brain sees what they are doing and takes that part of the song and magnifies it without you really doing anything. It just helps you "zone in" on that one voice/effect.

This is about as stripped down as it can get with PTX, no rhythm, just bass. It's haunting and beautiful at the same time, intimate with the close-up filming. It gives me chills every time.

One of the fun things about this video is that, since there's no vocal percussion used, Kevin is able to sing along with the others for the entire song. That means we get a sample of PTX 5-part harmony, instead of the more usual 4-part harmony during the "wall of sound" towards Kirstie's solo.

I think you can’t ignore the arrangements of the PTX songs. They can be beautiful, unusual, surprising, and more. And then the voices, beatboxing, cello, or piano can create these PTX masterpieces!

You can hear them individually when they are in shot because they dont try and oversing each other. The songs are so well arranged and performed, perfectly in tune with all their voices. Brilliant.

This song was recorded and released during the pandemic and after all the social upheaval of 2020 had begun. It has only appeared as a single and in this video. It has not appeared on an album to date. Yes, the figures in the background are the same individual member appearing on screen. During the "mad world" choruses, the member is walking backwards, then walking forwards during the other parts.
@eKalb333 жыл бұрын
I think the video is a nod to events in Donnie Darko. This song was covered in this tone originally for that movie by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules.
@simplesimon85863 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the blur effect of them walking in the background was a direct homage to the bizarre 4D effect in Donnie Darko that entered late in the films run time.
@ginarivera93962 жыл бұрын
I've watched several reactions to this song and nobody gets the "people walking behind" thing... it's just part of the depressing mood of the song that is why the background is dark and "the familiar faces" and people "running in circles..." is what they try to represent with those images. Absolutely mesmerizing!

Aww, one of my top five PTX covers. It's glorious. Still loving your genuine bafflement and appreciation of these guys! I think you really need to watch a live one next (not that their studio versions lack in any way at all, but I think you're ready for live 😉). You could try Hallelujah as you've already seen the studio version. 'Gold' is a one take recording, or any of the 'Evolution' videos. But what we Pentaholics REALLY want to see is the cover of Imogen Heap's 'Aha!'. Watch the studio version so that you can hear the crazy stuff that Kevin and Avi does (Avi sings two notes at once (overtones he calls it) and its nuts. Then watch the Live in Singapore/Star Vista. The audio isn't great as its fan cam, but trust me you won't be disappointed. BTW, if and when you watch the live, you'll wonder where Kevin is. He's there, but off camera. Speaking of Kevin, he did a cover of 'Down' that you will LOVE. It's genius. And Mitch just dropped a cover of Billie Eilish's 'Your Power' which I still haven't recovered from.. Keep 'em coming!!

You've commented on this many times now, about the fact that when you see a person on-screen you can hear their voice more clearly. The general principle has to do with how your brain processes information. Generally, analyzing audio waves the way our brain does requires an absurd amount of processing power, which we do have. However, when you have multiple voices blended into a single waveform, singling out one and focusing on it is tremendously difficult. The extra information you get from seeing a person while hearing them allows you to correlate the visual impression with the audio, and makes it much easier for your brain to single out that particular voice.

Hearing who singing, is ones mind, it is because a person takes in more visually so our mind focuses more on what we see. If you listen with out the video you can hear the one you mentally focus on. Hope this makes sense.

Someone in another reaction video explained that it's due to the guy who does their video editing. I'm horrible at retaining names so I don't remember who they attributed it to, but apparently he does most of their video editing and he makes sure the person on screen is "brought forward" among the voices. It's subtle, but it's a fantastic technique.
@DarthRayj3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, they all (but the Trio in particular) are also fantastic at blending their voices into one background harmony and then switching tone to bring out their individual qualities more when they're doing solo lines.

Have always loved your reactions (particularly Pentatonix), but I would like to see how you would react to another "band"....PostModern Jukebox (PMJ) has been terrific for nearly 10 years. It's a jazzy/swing band with guest artists. I think world-class women singers are Kristie Maldonado, Angelina Jordan and Morrissett Amon, but (for me), the best singer on the planet is Haley Reinhart. She does a cover of Radiohead's "Creep" with PMJ. She has done other songs with them..."Seven Nation Army", but "Creep" is a level above all !! Give it a try....total CHILLS !!

Another couple more in this same vein of video minimalism and emotion are "Say Something" and "Run To You". I had never heard the song "Mad World" until I heard it on "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" and the PTX comes out with it. It is not a song I would normally like but PTX has helped me find and appreciate current music that I would ordinarily not hear. BTW, 4 years old is new to me but then as you get older time takes on a different meaning!
@Maerahn3 жыл бұрын
Rather than an editing trick, it might just be a psychological effect that you can hear a singer's voice more clearly when a camera's on them. Even many people who think they can't lip-read can actually match mouth-movements to sounds better than they realise (that's how the awesome Bad Lip Reading channel works so well!) When you see the person on full screen you see when their mouths are moving and how, and your ear will subconsciously pick out the sounds that 'match' most closely to those movements. And of course, after a while, you get to know how each person's voice sounds when they sing, which makes that process even easier.

I love watching You get more and more into Pentatonix especially since it's not the genre you React to. I am also a metal head. Your journey has been a breath of fresh air. React to radioactive By Pentatonix which features Lindsey Stirling on the violin. She plays the violin while dub stepping. Then you Should check out her own stuff Starting with shatter me or lost on you. It is not an editing technique that when you see The person singing it's easier to hear their voice and the others are in the Background. I quilt and I will almost always have a few mistakes with Seams not lining up or something being turned the wrong way. When somebody else looks at it their eye fills it in and you don't see the mistake. I only see them. So when you have a group harmonizing and the camera goes to 1 person That is just your Brain Dialing in to that person. I hope that makes sense. Bottom line It's a physiological Event That our mind does. If you want to just hear Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty, Do be my eyes. You may not realize this but you are now a Pentaholic. Great reaction as always.
