Most of the orchestra members, when they are not playing their instruments, are following the sheet music and counting. The virtuoso on the piano has practiced his score until it is committed to memory, including the sections where he is not playing. Months of practice, and weeks of reversals have already taken place before the first public performance.

The "Emperor"; the composer's last, and, arguably, greatest, piano concerto.

Maybe even the greatest piano concerto ever written. As much as audiences love the Rach 2&3, I think this one is untouchable.

May, 1809. Napoleon, a man the composer had once admired, is attacking Vienna. Beethoven, as obstinate as a mule, refuses to leave. He works, crouching in his brother's basement; his hearing is already going bad. He eventually leaves the city and finishes his last piano concerto and other works. A general armistice is signed in early 1810, and things calm down. The piece premieres in Leipzig in 1811, and in Vienna the following year. Beethoven cannot hear his music by then, except in his mind.

Hi Suzi and Travis. Just imagine that you are there. Even if you have the best sound system, nothing beats being there. Did you ever go to a classical concert? My personal favorites are Vivaldi and Handel. Spoken by a 70 year young metal head. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Daniil Trifonov is a very intense pianist. I love all his works. He plays Bach, Mizart, Chopin etc. And it's always intense.

When you said he conducts with a toothpick, I knew who you were talking about immediately, but then again, I'm a classical music enthusiast.That's Valerie Gergierv. He's quite a character... He was Notorious for never starting his concerts on time. And BTW, it's pronounced conCHERto, so the CH is pronounced like in Chuck.

Beethoven was just magnificent. Beethoven could barely hear or was even deaf when he wrote this. He starting losing his hearing at around 20 and it is believed now that he could have been suffering from lead poisoning. Lead instrumentalists are the ones who can't make any mistakes. Others in the orchestra can get away with bits and pieces. You can drown in Beethoven's music.

you should go to a live classical music performance in your country, contrary to what it seems, it's not that expensive except for very famous artists. but there are many good big orchestras with very attractive prices cheaper than a pop artist

BEETHOVEN COULD NOT HEAR A NOTE WHEN HE COMPOSED THIS WORK!!!!! MYRON DYAL
@BachBeethovenBerg

Not sure that’s entirely true. He went deaf gradually and when he composed this particular work his hearing had deteriorated to the point where he couldn’t perform it himself but I don’t think he went completely deaf until a few years later. He was completely deaf when he composed his 9th symphony.

Its not usual to clap after the first movement - but the performance was such a marvel, it was totally appropriate to break that somewhat fuddy-duddy tradition. In fact, i find the lack of applause after a highely celebratory piece of music often quite unnatural annd wrong - but I suppose the rule is there because often enough, the mood is one that would be broken by applause, and a collective - an audience - is generally incapable of such judgrments

Never was fan of Gergiev, even before the entire "friend of Putin" thing. The 3 opening chords of the orchestra show why. How sloppy can you get? This needs to be together with the piano. This is when jet-setting, overpayed condcutors don't rehearse the stuff properly with the soloist before going on stage.

I wonder how long that delay must have felt for the orchestra. Hours?

A brilliant performance, as you would expect, but am I the only one who gets so irritated by the director insisting on giving us scenic views, close ups of flautist's noses and panning shots of the crowd when there is some wonderful piano playing going on? It happens in so many concert videos. It's a piano concerto for goodness sake. The camera concentration should be 99% at least on the pianist - especially when he/she is playing his/her heart out and displaying such incredible and beautiful skill. Show us the hands! Cut to the orchestra/conductor/crowd/scenery when there is a rest in the playing.

Is the cancellation a woke thing? I've seen people writing that classical music is seen as "whiteness" and it's "supposed high quality" intended to shame other cultures.
