Rachmaninoff's 'Piano Concerto No. 2' is the greatest piece of music ever written. Especially the movement titled 'Adagio Sostenuto'.

Rach 2 is beautiful for sure but Rach 3 is musically truly outstanding. His cello sonata is fantastic too.

I don’t know about a modern conducting wand, but the person who invented conducting, Jean Baptiste-Lully, used a big wooden stick when he invented it. Instead it of waving it in the air to keep people together he pounded it on the ground. One day he accidentally pounded it into his foot and the gangrene he developed as a consequence was the reason he died.

Variation 18 18:50 is one of the most romantic pieces, imho

One of my favorite pieces of music. The section starting around 18:40 was used in the movie Somewhere In Time with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour! Beautiful movie with beautiful music! ❤

And amazingly, it's the same main melody that all the other variations are based on, just flipped upside down on the musical staff.

6:45 one of the first conductors, jean-baptiste lully, actually stabbed himself in the foot with his conducting stick and died from gangrene -- this was during the time when conductors would keep time by stamping the conducting stick on the ground

I don't know whether anyone has been injured by a conductor's baton, but it wouldn't surprise me. I remember our conductor throwing a baton at a saxophone player, and having it go down the bell of his sax. And of course the legendary French composer Lully died of gangrene caused by striking his own foot with his conductor's staff -- back in 1687.

You may not be aware, but the theme that the brass played right before the end is the famous "Dies Irae" gregorian chant theme, from the Requiem. It invokes the souls of the dead.
