"You couldn't even beat a Salad in a fight" We'll give credit to King Richard the Lionheart where it's due. In his crusade, he won multiple battles which he lead himself against King Saladin's army which King Saladin never participated in. King Richard's sheer prowess he displayed by cutting down his armored opponent down to below the neck from the head instilled fear in Muslims troops, enough to make them flee battle. It's the case of "we may have lost the battle, but we won the war." for King Saladin's army. As a Muslim myself, I am impressed at the chivalry and prowess displayed by King Richard and it's a shame that such a man had to suffer and die the way he did. He may not have been a great king, but I do not see him less than remarkable in terms of a chivalrous fighter.

They believed that doing this got them in a state of near invincibility as the fact of being high actually allowed them to ignore pain to a certain degree, and thus could fight longer and shrug out what normally would be debilitating or shocking blows, slashes and stabs. They didn't know it at the time, they just thought it was war magic.

Some history references you may have missed: -"Whacked by a 10 year old" and the ending line about gangrene is referencing how Richard the Lionheart died from a gangrene-infected wound caused by a 10 year old boy accidentally shooting him in the shoulder/chest with a crossbow. -"Lodbrok" roughly translates to 'shaggy pants' in modern English which is referenced in the Zoinks line -Richards family made up the Plantagenet line, and the last descendent of that line, Richard the Third's spine was out of shape, or twisted, most likely due to scoliosis. -Richard wasn't exactly uh. lacking in the bedroom, but he basically had a child bride (per tradition) and wasn't really interested in her. So he had a number of mistresses, including the one who gave birth to his only (illegitimate) heir -There's a widely accepted theory that Richard likely never learned to speak English despite being the King of England, at least not fluently. His two languages were French and a now-dead dialect known as Occitan. -Ragnar's second verse about "Brother John" is a combination of: a) Richard's actual brother John who basically ran the kingdom while Richard was off on the crusades, and there were a number of conflicts within the family about who should actually rule, and b) The song "Brother John" which refers to Christian monks. Which goes into the line about chunks of monks on Northumberland lawns, referring to a massacre that the Vikings led on a monastery in Northumberland that shocked the rest of Europe as no one had ever brutalized a holy place like that - but the Vikings having their own polytheistic religion saw it as no different than any other place to ransack

Huge history nerd here so I shall explain certain parts, Richard Lionheart invaded Sicily on his way to the third crusade due to the new king arresting Richard's sister and refusing her inheritance in 1190. Ivarr the Boneless, we still don't know why he was called it. People debate if it was either a physical disability or something to do with his pp. Richard was one of the last of the Plantagenet line who ruled all of England, Wales and parts of Ireland and more of France than the French. Salad in, is a pun of Saladin who was Richards enemy during the third crusade, which Richard lost. Saladin ruled the Ayyubid sultanate of Egypt. I think the word berserker means bear skin. Richards ransom was so large that England had to pay 3 years of taxes for his release. He was arrested due to his apparent role in Conrad of Monneforat's assassination. Anyway great reaction man! Edit: As the comment below me said, Richard was not the last of his dynasty but instead it was a reference to Richard the 3rd's scoliosis.

Richard making reference to all of Ragnar's "Things" is him making reference to the first of the world's Parliaments, which happened in Norway, Denmark and Iceland. A Berserker was an elite Viking warrior (They were kinda like shock "troops" running into the enemy formations and killing everything in their path) ... they went "Berserk" in battle and it is written in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles that they sometimes fought butt naked (or clad only in their totem animal skin) only with a weapon (or two) and a shield if only with 1 weapon ;) They where given a totem animal from birth and where brought up as warriors just like the Spartans ... most known types where the wolf & the bear Berserkers ! But there where many other kinds of Berserkers. They would come running at you howling like a wolf or growling like a bear and behave like their totem animals (and where clad in their totem animal skin) .... and they where FEARED by the Anglo Saxon warriors ! :P

Richard the 1 died from a young boy (around 10yo) shooting him in the shoulder with a crossbow and gangrene from the injury. He was also known for raising taxes to insanely high amount to pay for his crusades. He never sired an heir to the throne with his wife but did have an illegitimate son and there was some speculation that he was homosexual. The plantagenet line is Richards lineage. Richard the 3rd was the last of the line and he had severe scoliosis. (I twist your spine like the end of the plantagenet line) He didnt speak english he spoke french mainly and only spent about a year of his life in England. Richard 1 was also captured and they demanded a stupid high payment to return him. His mother raised taxes and spent over 25% of englands total wealth to pay his ransom. Also, richard on his crusade went to war with the ruler Saladin...and saladin beat him and they eventually had come to an agreement between them (You couldn't even beat a SALAD IN a fight) those are the main points you need to understand most of ragnars bars

About Richard's wife not getting any... think that was referring to the years that he was away = "Following his accession, he spent very little time, perhaps as little as six months, in England. Most of his life as king was spent on Crusade, in captivity, or actively defending his lands in France." Also runes was used for graffiti. XD, at the Hagia Sofia there are two runic inscriptions, believed to been don by members of the Varangian Guard in Constantinople in the Viking Age. Some say that one was "Halfdan" with rest of inscription being unreadable but believed to follow the formula of "carved these runes" and 2nd one is thought to say "Ari made these runes" I jsut remember hearing that runes were the equivalent of modern "Halfdan was here"

Some vikings wore proper armor, however even though it sounds fictional there were whole family lines that charged into battle like madmen. If I remember right they wore wolf/bear skin and that was it. Not even leather. Just hides, and they were unstable as fuck. In fact I think someone lost a battle since they used them on the front line and they ended up charging the wrong way with their indiscriminate killing attacking their own allies. They were genuinely unhinged murder machines apparently. Heard something about them using shrooms but also remember hearing that the type of shrooms they had access to would have killed them so idk on that. However they did have successful family lines of these guys. Which means they fought charging and slashing everywhere, wearing what could barely even be referenced as armor, and enough still survived that they created family lines that inherited the title(means something like wolfskin or something but we generally call them berserkers.) One of those truth is stranger than fiction things. Cuz tbh I thought it was just Hollywood/D&D bullshit when I first heard about berserkers in middle school. Just didn't seem like a likely reality.
@UltimateGamerCC3 жыл бұрын
in reference to Richard and his wife: no man... he married a 12 yr old girl, so they never did anything sexual, it was an arranged marriage type of thing. Vikings didnt much in the way of armor because they didnt have the resources to make their own, instead most of it was adopted from civilizations they pillaged from, they was very poor in that sense. yup, Richard The Lionheart was shot in the shoulder by a 10 yr old boy who sought revenge for his family, he didnt die from the wound but he died from the infection, the gangrene that he got and the boy was executed for it, even though Richard said for him to live.
@artembentsionov3 жыл бұрын
I believe Vikings did wear armor. In fact, at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson surprised the Viking king Harald Hardrada and attacked him. Many agree that one reason the Vikings lost is because they didn’t have time to put on their armor

One that a lot of people missed, Richard the III was the last Plantaganet king and had a very twisted spine. :D EDIT: Another one is that the only real Vi-King history we know is from Runes. Viking meaning sea king, and the records of the men themselves are literally just the runestones their sons wrote, and the propaganda-laden English Christian reports. That's all we have.

The 'salad in a fight' bar was a miss for Ragnar because Saladin never beat Richard. Saladin could only win when he went after other detachments that wasn't with the main army & locations where Richard WASN'T. Every time the main forces clashed, Richard won. Easily. Saladin could only win by drawing the Crusaders into the desert, stretching supply lines and raiding them and turning the strengths into weaknesses. Richard knew this and easily had it countered. If Saladin wanted to stop him...he had to do it through direct combat and never could. He did make attempts to harrass and hinder the crusaders and force the knights to break rank, which that DID work...Richard countered with a FULL charge, and made it a shock & awe retaliation which caused Saladin to no longer be viewed as an unstoppable juggernaut. (Battle of Arsuf). Richard not only retook Jaffa with a smaller force, but then slaughtered Saladin's army when they tried to counterattack and retake it in a attack at dawn that was suppose to be a surprise attack and they only lost TWO men, with many wounded to over 700 dead of Saladin's army. The end of that battle was led by Richard himself in a mounted charge. Infact, during the retaking of Jaffa, he fought at the forefront of the army, and Saladin's army routed and fled in disorder...not until more then 5 miles inland was Saladin able to reform his army. Saladin was forced after the Battle of Jaffa on 09/02/1192 to finalize a treaty with Richard. Richard was facing internal dissention among leaders of his army, but army to army, Saladin never stood a chance of beating Richard. Because of a failure of a line...Ragnar lost.
